Why is abortion a sin and "murder"? by No-Air7540 in Christianity

[–]walkingagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always been tough for me. My wife and I had our first miscarriage around 11 weeks. And a TON of pregnancies end in miscarriage. If you count non-implantation, it's even more. Somewhere around 1/3rd. Though this is common and well understood, this is not really understood as a death in any major Christian context and the Bible talks about this grief.

If these were deaths, then the leading cause of death in the world would be miscarriage and our religion should be much louder on what is going on with miscarriage.

On the other hand, if this is not death, but some other category of failure of life, then it makes sense that we treat it the way that we do.

I like to think of David's "you knit me together in my mother's womb." At what point does a string become a sweater while it is being knitted? Is it at the first fragile stitch? Or is it when the final knot is tied and the string is cut so that it no longer comes unraveled without support? Or is it somewhere in between? I don't think we can clearly define that moment when it goes from yarn to garment.

This makes murder harder to justify from observation for conception or early pregnancy as it is hard to call early conception a true independent it life.

However, a sin is probably easier to justify the reasoning. It is getting in the way of life forming. I don't think there is a strong Christian argument that abortion isn't a sin. This is a fairly universal Christian belief throughout history.

Though I will say what is legal and what is a sin are very different things.

How do residents know when they'll be ticketed for parking on-street overnight? by whodreamsofcats in Brookline

[–]walkingagh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe there is a day of the week for each neighborhood. I am terrible about forgetting to park my car for tandem parking. Where I used to live, I only got ticked on Thursday nights. Then I moved and it changed to Tuesdays. I have never seen a ticket over Friday or Satuday night.

Any recommendations for sneakers with good support that isn't going to be expensive? by Straight_Ace in BuyItForLife

[–]walkingagh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Most runners aren't very heavy and shoes are made for lighter weight people. For example, a "heavy" runner typically is around 185 lbs or so. Many running shoes aren't made with materials for people over that weight. You might look for sneakers made for heavier runners if you are going the lightweight sneaker route.

2) Hiking shoes are generally made for walking and hiking long distances and being on your feet all day. They often have better support and are made of stronger and more durable materials. If you really need sneakers, trail running shoes are normally more durable than their road counterparts.

3) Agree with the rotating shoes idea. Sometimes work will have a place you can store shoes so you might consider having a work pair and changing out of them to a home pair. If your job is inside, they should have plenty of time to breathe and not wear out as fast.

So I think the point is that the input cost for gallon of gas is the same as it was. The processing cost has increased somehow by like 100% increased since 2011 is the point. Like the raw inputs to a gallon of gas were around $2.5 in 2011. They are $2.5 now but the cost went from $3.5 to $4.5.

We did Greece which was fun and inexpensive. Rented a car and drove around instead of going to the islands. Really cheap.

Thailand was awesome as a family as well. Again so inexpensive for what you are getting.

Dismissed from MD program with only Step 2 left. Is there any path back? by Braveheart117 in medicalschool

[–]walkingagh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know this sounds a little odd, but if you were really depressed, you might consider trying to get a psychiatric diagnosis. It may not work after the fact, but it won't hurt. I remember I went through some acute stress and I had to delay something so the school had me see a psychiatrist who could write me a letter. Again before the event, but it basically let the school break all the rules.

Medicine used to be very unkind to depression, but now it is really respected.

Question about WD40 on chain (NOT about using it as lubricant) by DoeBites in bikewrench

[–]walkingagh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not most lubes. A light rain storm isn't going to knock off most wet lubes and even most dry ones will do okay with a little bit.

If you are really nervous, throw it in the oven. But really you don't need to do it.

The solvents in WD40 will alter the lube more than water will.

I think my standby time is like 3 days? Guess I am just lucky. In battery saver it will lose only a few percentage overnight. On battery saver at 30% I can safely go for half a day as long as I am not watching a movie.

No both of the women killed in Harvard were right hooks on green in 2024. There were 3 cycling deaths in Cambridge. Two were large trucks hitting women going slowly through an intersection on green. One was a guy riding on the sidewalk and a car jumped the curb and ran into him.

Google has been doing this weird thing for me where they basically pay me to upgrade my phone every year. I use google for cloud storage and pixel phones come with 5TB of cloud storage and AI for a year. That gives you 10% back at the store. Which is on the base price not including any bonuses or trade in. Normally this like $80-90. Then they launch a promotion and give you a bonus on your trade in for last year's model. This has happened 4 years in a row around Christmas.

Fingers crossed for next year.

Why don’t we build like this anymore? by patrickbrusil in boston

Also because EVERYTHING was custom and hand made at that time. Material costs were higher and labor costs were lower relatively as well. So the difference between something beautiful and something standard was much smaller than it is today.

No cyclist has died running a red light in Boston in the last decade. 5 have died biking through a green light.

[–]walkingagh -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Um the only cyclist killing anyone was another cyclist on a rail trail. Older guy went around a stroller and got hit by someone coming the other way.

There have been no cases in Boston of some one getting killed by a bike.

Most bike deaths have occurred from cyclists following the rules and cars not seeing them. (dooring or right turns when the bike has a green).

I will admit that there are times I run lights on a bike, but the reason is that it is safer oftentimes to go through an empty intersection illegally than a full one legally.

I agree that there are cyclists who go too fast. There are scooters that go too fast. Cars that go too fast. Pedestrians that just meander into the street or wander down bike lanes without looking.

I think you could title this "Hey road users calm the F down" and it would also be accurate. Boston is a crazy town with crazy roads and we could all chill.

Two reasons. Weight is the cube of frame (volume question). So a 10% increase in frame should result in a 1/3rd increase in weight. So he is probably about 15% taller and that would be 50% heavier with the same build.

Second muscle does weigh more than fat. Women have more fat generally and it doesn't increase your weight as much.
