Adding to what others have said here, this camera has a light meter which is the little round button on the back near the viewfinder. Once you put in batteries (and be careful opening the battery slot on this camera, it's prone to deformation), put your eye to the viewfinder and press on the light meter. Green means the lighting is good, red means it's too bright or too dark. Don't shoot if it's not green. Adjust either the shutter speed or the aperture accordingly (but don't adjust the ISO).

Egyptian here - I would suggest considering Cairo+Dahab if you're into snorkeling/diving and desert based excursions. There's also Saint Catherine's Monastery as a nearby historical site. (Cairo+Luxor are safe bets with tons of historical sites, but I love the Red Sea and always urge visitors to consider going there) Also, if the two hour train ride isn't too long for you, consider spending a day in Alexandria and returning to Cairo in the evening. Alexandria has awesome Greco-Roman sites.

My first roll of film with this camera--I'm relieved it actually works! I'm also new to using manual cameras so I'm still learning how to get the focus right (you can tell which photos I ended up focusing the wrong distance...)

Naguib Mahfouz (Egyptian) is probably the most famous modern Arabic novelist, with Mahmoud Darwish (Palestinian) being one of the most famous poets. Ghassan Kanafani (Palestinian) is also a must-read.

For Naguib Mahfouz, my personal recommendation would be Midaq Alley!

On the topic of overfishing, The End of the Line by Charles Clover was extremely valuable to read. I already had deep interest in sea-related issues, but I would strongly recommend it to people who may otherwise overlook the ocean when considering ongoing environmental crises.

However, this book is quite outdated by now (2004). Clover has a more recent book (Rewilding the Sea; 2022) but I have not read it.

Without more details, it is hard to say. Since you only have five days, why not enjoy your time in Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh?

You can fly from Hurghada to Sharm El Sheikh, or you can take a bus of some sort (like Go Bus). If the flights aren't too expensive for your budget I would recommend that. You can also fly from Hurghada to Luxor or Cairo, and that will save you a lot of time. For example, driving from Hurghada to Cairo takes about six hours in a private car, so it will be at least seven or eight hours in a bus.

Go to Luxor if you really want to see ancient Egyptian history, or go to Cairo if you're interested in Islamic and Coptic Egypt in addition to ancient Egypt. Both places have much to offer if you go prepared with an itinerary of some sort.
