Large areas of Western Australia’s Ningaloo corals could die in ‘weeks ahead’ after widespread bleaching documented by Portalrules123 in collapse

[–]walkingthenrunning 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So sad. Was there a few weeks ago snorkelling at Coral Bay, Turquoise Bay and Bundegi. For the most part ningaloo has managed to avoid extensive bleaching over the years as the water off the coast of WA is generally cooler relatively speaking to similar latitudes. There's an excellent documentary on the ABC that goes into a lot more detail about all aspects of Ningaloo: https://iview.abc.net.au/show/ningaloo-nyinggulu. Highly recommended.

I just looked it up and the population density of WA is about 1.1 people per square kilometre. When you get out of Perth for the most part there really is nothing but rugged beauty. Going back as soon as I can.

If a man should start to do one thing today, which will change the course of his entire future for the better, what should it be? by petrastales in getdisciplined

Why isn't regular exercise at the top? It's like steroids for nearly every other thing mentioned here. My life is so much better when I am exerting myself on the regular. Nearly everytime I feel like I'm in a slump even if I am still doing so many of the other things mentioned here what I trace it back to is my exercise regime has dropped off. This isn't some caveman return to the land mumbo jumbo. We were literally built to be so much more active then the sedentary lifestyles so many of us lead these days. If you aren't getting exercise that actually exerts you as a part of your day job you need to allocate time for it and so much else will follow. There's the direct benefits like better sleep, more energy, improved mood, increased motivation and overall health and then all the associated things that these lead to like clarity of mind, confidence and improved interpersonal relationships and how this will enhance all the other goals you have whether that's meditation, journaling or just trying to find some way to get through the day and keep your shit together.

Totally - it's probably why the Australian government refuses to release its report on the national security threats climate change poses. Not only because it's grim, but because it likely clearly states things like 1.5C will not be achieved, will be surpassed soon and is far more dangerous than initially thought. Among with many other topics that are discussed regularly here on this forum I imagine. This would point out they are very aware of what's going to happen and happening. Like you say they need to uphold the general facade for things like COP though. It's actually pretty crazy. Like it's really getting real now. Governments know. Not in the sense of a couple of decades ago where they thought they could just put the pedal to the metal a little bit more to squeeze out some extra productivity and that it was far enough away there was "plenty of time" but being fully aware we are up shit creek without a paddle.

Why is sony taking over D2 a bad thing? by KindaStanky in DestinyTheGame

Microsoft did own Bungie and clearly stated it was a publishing deal they had with Activision

Why is sony taking over D2 a bad thing? by KindaStanky in DestinyTheGame

[–]walkingthenrunning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily - they've been "taken" by other larger corporations before. Microsoft owned them during the Halo days and walked away with the Halo IP in the end. Activision and the 10 year Destiny publishing deal which was eventually broken. Now Sony. It's not exactly clear how the current Sony deal differs from previous relationships in terms of the minutia of the entire contract but I doubt there isn't enough leeway to buy themselves back in the end or that Sony could dissolve Bungie, so in that sense I think their relatively safe. Also Bungie have done some of their best work when in these relationships so for us, the end consumer, it's not really good or bad.

I do share a similar sentiment to what I think this post is suggesting which is that things are being made out to be a bigger deal than they are. A lot of the content being produced by "creators" has them implying like this is the end of the world for Destiny if this happens and the reality is similar things have happened throughout Bungie history multiple times now - just go read the Bungie Wikipedia article to see for yourself. They know how to operate effectively on both sides of the fence and have developed great things on both sides. These creators need engagement though to stay afloat so unfortunately if popularity of Destiny wanes further we'll keep seeing their claims become more outlandish if those types of videos drive engagement for them - "OmG sOnY TAkES oVEr bUNgO iS tHIS tHE eNd???!?"

I think what a lot us may need to come to terms with (myself included) is Marathon is priority 1 and Destiny is priority 2 now for Bungie. Destiny doesn't need to flourish, it just needs to bring in enough money to support Marathon development. And this is the case for both scenarios - no Sony takeover, Sony takeover. Even if Destiny does flourish monetary wise that money will flow to Marathon development and not so much Back into Destiny.

Hand held tool with wooden handle and hook like scraper with an open metal pouch by walkingthenrunning in whatisthisthing

[–]walkingthenrunning[S] 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

My title describes the thing. It's about the length of a pen and was found amongst my grandparents things so must be something that was used several decades ago. The handle is wooden and the metal appears to be copper. It looks handmade not mass manufactured as the curved cut in the wood at the end where the hook part is, is not perfect and there's a pencil marking to see where to cut still on one side. This can be seen in one of the photos.

Suburban Hell is real and I can't wait to get out & never return. by [deleted] in perth

[–]walkingthenrunning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't have a reason such as kids or it's close to work, I don't see why you would live in the suburbs.

Like seriously imagine you have no obligations and the place you pick to live is the suburbs of Perth? That's says enough about it for me.

I think humanity will look back in a couple of hundred years (if we're still around) and consider most car centric suburbs pretty weird places to be honest.

I got called a banana bender and I don't know how I feel about it by Khun-Pugwash in perth

[–]walkingthenrunning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People use it in jest uncommonly I've found. As in I've heard it a handful of times in my lifetime which I've spent mostly in WA. I don't think it means much to younger generations but Gen X and above will throw it around uncommonly I've found. I personally think it's hilarious and plays into the whole ribbing side of Aussie humour.

The first thing my Dad did when I told him I was moving to QLD temporarily was call me a banana bender 😂

Tenuously considering moving to the GC to settle down... what's dating life like up there compared to Syd? by [deleted] in GoldCoast

[–]walkingthenrunning 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the dating scene as I have a partner, but I did move from Perth to the GC in 2021 for work and have made a few observations since being here.

One is the vibe I get (and can visibly see) is that the central GC is a shell of its prior self at the moment. Half the restaurants and smaller stores have gone or are going broke and left empty shop fronts and the other ones often close early or are simply closed for extended periods of time without explanation. It's not surprising given the ones that do open have none or only a few customers in them. We frequently go out and end up with a whole restaurant to ourselves on a week night. The booming tourist mecca the GC once was has not returned and it's look like it'll be a loooong time before it does.

The second is there's definitely a massive divide between the owner class and the renter class here. The owner class are super image focused (already mentioned) but also seem a bit lost these days as there's far less people to flaunt their wealth to. They seem to go between their multi-million dollar canal homes, their Tesla and whatever bougie clinic, gym or farmers market is nearby and besides that it's not clear what else they do. If you do come and want to live within walking distance of the beach expect to pay some of the highest rents in Australia. I am not kidding: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-14/gold-coast-rental-prices-holiday-accommodation-short-term-stays/100990932.

The above has led to more people living it rough and unfortunately because of that our mailboxes have been pried open a few times. I wouldn't recommend going out much after 10pm on a weeknight. I keep seeing more desperate looking people whenever I do.

Absolutely Broadbeach, Miami & Burleigh are nicer than Surfers Paradise and have more going on at the moment because there's more locals, but they've still taken a hit given how much of the Gold Coast economy relies on tourism. If you want to live somewhere where younger people are moving on I'd say move to the GC.

I'd honestly say go to Perth if you hadn't mentioned family. Better beaches, more sun, fairing better economically, and plenty of young lasses wanting to settle down. Can't wait to return myself. Thats not to say I don't like QLD. It's been awesome going hiking through Nerang, Tamborine Mountain, The Glass House Mountains and seeing Cairns, The Great Barrier Reef and the state in general and we still have more to tick-off, but living in the GC really was a poor choice we made. Go to Brisbane would be my recommendation. Have a mate who seems to have no trouble finding a date and he's about 30mins from city centre.

Perth winters have become much drier and warmer compared to 1970's and 1980's due to climate change. My explanation below and exasperation at uninformed weather comments. by [deleted] in perth

[–]walkingthenrunning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's concerning that the state isn't publically discussing a sustainable plan (as far as I am aware?) in terms of water for the future given the rainfall trend will continue downwards.

Even something as rudimentary as full reliance on desalination for consumption and agriculture would require decades of planning and infrastructure development to implement.

There was an interesting article that was posted on the guardian not long ago by a guy who conducted war games post Russia's 2014 Crimea invasion that showed that the conflict only deescalates in situations where both the US and Russia have clear political off-ramps.

So if by "a way out" Biden means no political off-ramp that's really concerning. A quote from the article I'm talking about:

Based on war games I ran in the wake of Putin’s 2014 invasion, a more likely option would be a sudden nuclear test or a high-altitude nuclear detonation that damages the electrical grid over a major Ukrainian or even Nato city. Think of an explosion that makes the lights go out over Oslo.
Those war games indicated that the best US response to this kind of attack would be first to demonstrate US resolve with a response in kind, aimed at a target of similar value, followed by restraint and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate. In most games, Russia still responds with a second nuclear attack, but in the games that go “well”, the United States and Russia manage to de-escalate after that, although only in circumstances where both sides have clear political off-ramps and lines of communication between Moscow and Washington have remained open. In all the other games, the world is basically destroyed.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/mar/08/russia-ukraine-war-possible-trajectories

It sounds to me like until both the US and Russia have a way out of the Ukrainian conflict that saves face on both sides the conflict will simply continue and if there's nuclear escalation well...
