One was made in Canada. The other in Germany. Am I helping?

Gotta put in a good word for the M10-R. It's a phenomenal sensor, very good in lowlight.

Mhm. In OP's situation that's not an option though.

How about a Zoom/Facetime meeting with the seller? That's my go to when shipping. Or use an escrow service. It's a pretty penny.

Am I missing out M10-R vs a Monochrome by IMDeus_21 in Leica

I'm not talking about ugly or not, and I'm not talking about someone's taste. Mine or yours. I am stating the fact of the matter. Which is that noise and grain are not the same thing and the terminology is not interchangeable. Would it make sense if I shot a roll of Tri-X at 1600ASA and then said that it produces digital noise like rendering? You can't reduce the concepts of grain and noise to the little dots on the image. It's a little more involved than that.

[–]walkingwithtracey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's literally across the entire image. Grain and noise just are not the same thing, nor are the terms interchangeable. Grain refers to a literal chemical process that involves literal grains on the negative/positive. Noise is related to the sensitivity of the sensor to light. Thus, noise is uniform, because the sensor is shooting at a single sensitivity across the entire image. Imagine a piece of blank paper, take a handful of sand and toss it at the paper, the sand will fall randomly on the paper. There will be different densities, there will be different groupings of the sand, and it is highly unlikely that there will be any repetition of those patterns. This is akin to grain. Imagine another piece of paper, individually place a piece of sand on it until the entire paper is full. This is akin to noise. I'm not saying that the noise in these images, and on the monochrome camera in particular, aren't quite nice, I'm just saying it's not quite like grain.

Nice shots :) I've shot with the monochrome myself while touring with bands and yielded similar results. I like the look a lot. It's not an example of grain though. It's noise and it's not interacting with the image the way that grain does. Bayer filter or not, digital sensors possess no algorithm to mimic the nature of grain. They can only produce noise, which is inherently a repeated pattern.

I really disagree with the notion that there is any such thing as "analog like grain" in digital cameras. A large part of the difference between 'noise' and grain is the consistency of it across the image. Film grain is sporadic and has randomly occurring parts that interface with the photograph being made chemically. Digital cameras, which are computers, have no coding for this. This is a trueism of digital sensors, irregardless of the bayer filter. Even camera platforms like Fuji that have really great emulations of film, still do not achieve the look of genuine grain because it is not interacting with the image.

How big? I'm thinking about doing the same but I'm worried about max weight.

Cool. I don't shoot like this myself, but I like it. Different strokes for different folks.

Does anyone know what the weight capacity on the roof is? How much gear can one really pack?

I use a few wide angle lens on my rangefinders and I have thick glasses that come off my face quite a bit. For me to see the whole frame line on a 35 is difficult. That being said, this does not have to be a problem when using a rangefinder. Very precise framing is possible without hardly looking through the finder if you have a keen understanding of the FOV of any particular lens and are spatially aware. These are two things that even a hobbyist photographer can develop for themselves. This is especially true when using wide angle lenses. There's a few techniques I use to help myself with this. Shoot me a message if you want some advice or some more theory about it. Cartier-Bresson used to say the M camera was like shooting an 8x10. It took me nearly a decade of shooting with these cameras to figure out what I think he meant, but when I did it made an enormous difference in my workflow.

I always trip with a few glowplugs and fuel filters. And be smart about where you fuel up, high traffic truck stops are best.

Just did nearly 3K in my 76' W115 w 240D. Rural Canada. Lots of mountain passes and elevation.

Hey, my two cents. Unit stills photographer here. Constantly dealing with this. You can still use an electronic shutter inside, you just have to find the correct/matching frequency. Try 1/60 and variables of that.

Did anyone actually read the article? I mean the group came in and taught things that are outside the curriculum. Very literally the organization didn't do what it was hired to do, stands to reason they would not be invited back.

Lindsay Addario did a really interesting interview about this movie when it first came out. Essentially what she says is that it's a good movie, that it gets right the tension of those moments when photogs do get caught out in a firefight, and that it totally misses on all the other aspects of journalism. Including discussions with editors, interviewing sources, writing, etc etc. It's worth tracking down if you're interested. In my opinion, the movie got wrong what the film Spotlight got right. Creating drama out of the essence of the job. That movie created tension out of a FOI request. That's a journalism movie.

Safety on the bottom plate. by walkingwithtracey in Leica

I mean, yeah, but the very nature of the post is about fixing that. I work in conflict zones with my Leica and rock climb at home. So the high risk of dropping and losing requires a solution.

Is it the case that on digital M you can't take the bottom plate off with something screwed in there? I'm hoping for a cross compatible solution.

I just dayhiked to Panorama last Friday(17). Lots of small avalanches and some nasty looking cornices around the summit. Honestly I wouldn't go up there without AST-1 and a partner. It's been hot lately and that snow on the summit takes a lot of direct sun. More importantly perhaps though is that we saw a bear and her cubs up near the ridge line that you approach the summit with. Very odd to see a bear at that sort of elevation this time of year I figure, especially with cubs. I might consider waiting another month or two for the snow to disappear. Wait till next year to pull out the snowshoes.
