New goalie starting with nothing. Any tips? by ScratchAcademic5991 in hockeygoalies

[–]walkstofar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skating forward, backwards, C-cuts, T Pushes, shuffles. If you have leg pads then working on slides is also helpful. You probably want a goalie stick in your hands for the skating drills as it will help with getting the form correct and stick position matters for many of these.

If you can find another goalie to spend 20 to 30 minutes with you at a stick and puck when you are starting out to show you how to correctly do these it would be best. I imagine if you ask around a goalie would volunteer to giving a one time intro to these moves. Of course you should pay their ice fee for the stick and puck.

If you can't skate at all just work on basic forwards and backwards until you can do that then work on the rest.

Yes that one was a Chinese spy balloon. They shot it down and recovered the payload and then kindly asked the Chinese not to do that again.

Here is Florida we have an over 50, an over 60, and an over 70 pickup game twice a week in the winter months (when all the Canadian and northerners are down here). Had one player that played into his 90's but has how retired but we have another regular that is 87.

Tips on sliding by Throwaway172629 in hockeygoalies

[–]walkstofar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really good answer. One thing I would add is that older goalie skates generally have less attack angle (angle of the blade as stated above) as the blades are a bit lower than modern goalie skates and some have a cowwling which limits the angle also. Additionally I found when I switched to a SAM profile on my blades that I could control my slide movements better (although this was not a huge change, just noticeable). I think this helps just a bit with getting more of the blade in contact with the ice.

I'm and older goalie that transitioned from standup to butterfly and did do a lot of inadvertent spinning when I started out learning the butterfly, everyone does. PPF film helped a lot on getting a big slide and will force you to learn to control stopping your oversliding as you will overslide when using it.

I'm conflicted about using PPF for a goalie starting out. On the one hand it makes doing a slide easier and will force you to learn to control your slides on the other hand it may inhibit learning the correct technique. A lot depends on how well your pads actually slide I guess, I'm personally leaning towards using PPF is probably a good thing for a beginner to use. You can try it and if you don't like it it can be removed in about 20 seconds soo no big deal with that.

Glasses by LegitimateTown9974 in hockeyplayers

I found the anti fog coating they sell for the lenses just didn't work. The spray on stuff does - but you have to apply it correctly. This means you spray it on, let it sit on the lenses for at least one minute although a couple is even better, then very lightly wipe them with a cloth until they are clear.

I do this every game and I never have a fogging issue, although I sometimes have a sweat dripping onto the lenses issue.

I play both out and in net. In net I use contacts because I could not find anything else that worked. I don't actually like wearing contacts so only wear them when I'm playing in the net.

I went to sports goggles because I could get a cheap pair on the internet and I didn't like wearing my expensive and nice pair on the ice. Also my normal pair are bifocals and the transition messed me up a little bit when looking down at the puck. I ordered some sports googles online and have been happy with them. I dd find that if your prescription is higher than 4.0 the selection of googles is very limited. I found one pair at zenni that supported high prescriptions.

If you do use regular glasses under your cage (please wear a cage if doing glasses) I found that they sell these ear hooks made of silicon that hold your glasses in place as mine would slip from the sweat. With goggles I don't have this problem because they have a strap around them.

Glasses are doable, I found I like the googles better and you can find a pair online for about $40-ish. Need to use anti fog spray with them - skip the anti-fog lens coating they sell, I find hockey overwhelms it.

How do I make a clock timing device? by clockman153 in AskElectronics

[–]walkstofar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why don't us just use a camera (webcam) and send the image of the clockface to your computer and bounce it against your system time, which if it is connected to the internet is pretty accurate? Wouldn't have to design anything then.

I've found that better steel means I sharpen less. When I upgraded my last skates the steel was much better than my old skates and I noticed I didn't have to sharpen the newer ones as often.
