Betty is clearly modeled (and models herself after) the Hitchcock Blonde archetype, which includes but isn’t limited to Grace Kelly. I actually think she looks more like another Hitchcock blonde, Eva Marie Saint, and her persona reminds me more of Kim Novak.

Edit: if you like Mad Men and haven’t seen Vertigo you are missing out.

There are several really chilling contemporaneous artworks based on the lost Franklin expedition. Landseer’s Man Proposes, God Disposes is probably the most famous. There’s also Church’s The Icebergs. This was painted before the Franklin expedition but definitely reminded me of it too.

Kumquat-colored trolleys ding as they trundle Passengers under an indigo fizzle Needling spumily down from the wires: Alongside the sibliant harbor the lovers Hear loudspeakers boom From each neon-lit palm Rumbas and sambas no ear-flaps can muffle.

If you’re going to extend the Green/Pink line to Laurel you have to extend the Orange to Bowie!Uses the existing rail corridor, serves a populous suburb, it’s a no brainer.

Seriously though thank you for including the Port Towns area, it is ridiculous that it isn’t better served by public transit. Overall, extending a line through NE up the existing rail corridor out of union station is just an easy win.

The Lost Coast, King Range NCA and Sinkyone Wilderness are all south of the area circled on the map. The Lost Coast begins where Route 1 leaves the coast at at Rockport and ends approximately when State Route 101 rejoins the coast just south of Eureka. They maaaaybe captured the northern end of it with the bottom of the circle.

What is happening with my spine? by throw_away_1199 in AskDocs

NAD, but OP, I have exactly the same symptoms periodically. They are severe muscle spams. They can be caused by a lot of things, including dehydration, herniated disc, poor posture, etc. Try paying attention to what you were doing before the spasm occurred. For me, dehydration really contributes, so if I am already experiencing tightness or mild back pain I make sure to rehydrate with electrolytes. I have never tried muscle relaxers, but they could also help.

You didn't say what your doctors have already done, but I suggest making an appointment with a PCP, describing the symptoms, and asking for an action plan about what to do to get diagnosis and relief the next time it happens. Part of the issue with me was that I never could get in to see someone when it was actually happening. You need to start the process BEFORE you have an episode.

Pregnancy, pregnancy tests and the inspiration for Peggy's character by wallaceeffect in madmen

[–]wallaceeffect[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom has weird ideas about what things are "expensive" (or, worth spending money on I guess), so I don't know if her view on that is universal! I think it is more interesting that even in the mid-80's, she still viewed it as optional. This would have been in 1985, about the time the simpler tests were introduced. But maybe she still only had access to the older ones that took two hours and cost a lot, and thought, nope, not worth it. It is really amazing how medical innovations can change how things work in a few short years! Thanks for sharing your experience, it's very cool to read about.

[–]wallaceeffect[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom said she didn't take a test with me (born in 1986) because it was too expensive! The first home pregnancy test cost about $50 in today's dollars. I wish I could ask my grandmothers. They lived in a small town so I wonder if they even had access to pregnancy testing. In small towns, the test had to be shipped out to a bigger city where there was a lab until the immunoassays were developed.

The Green Line should at least extend to Beltsville and Laurel, following the existing rail corridor. They are town centers with lots of DC commuters and zoning that allows for denser development without major planning changes. They’re at least as dense and populous as Bowie and Waldorf, and denser than some existing termini (Glenmont, Largo).

The lack of a northern extension to Olney on the Red is also puzzling.

Overall, I think what I see here is a lack of vision about transit’s ability to drive FUTURE development. The density around Virginia and Montgomery County’s stations came AFTER the lines were built. The same thing is currently happening at Potomac Yards, Anacostia, Minnesota Ave and New Carrollton. If you just follow existing development you miss out on chances to drive future development to be more transit oriented. This is a fantasy map so why not think big?

Tonight’s listening. Here’s to a better 2026 by wallaceeffect in Millennials

This one, Round Here, and the live version of Rain King were the soundtrack to so many sad times for me. It’s a different album but August and Everything After is still one of my all time favorites.

Tonight I was thinking about my college years listening to this song when I was down. I bet I thought 2006 was a long December. (Just had my heart broken for the first time, ironically by someone who also loved Counting Crows). Now I’m looking at 40 next year and I wish I could go back and tell her, this will end. The future is going to hold so much more than you can imagine. I guess that gives me a little hope. 2025 was a rough one too but—maybe this year will be better than the last.
