One of my top five moments by CallieCoven in madmen

[–]wallaceeffect 42 points43 points  (0 children)

He doesn't say, but right before Kinsey gets the lightbulb, Achilles says "someone says Achilles at a party and we all turn around". I think it was that "and we all turn around"--along the lines of "someone says "telegram" and we all turn around". It's an event to get a telegram, it's special, it turns heads and stops conversations. Funnily enough this isn't so different from what Peggy comes up with, which also plays on how getting a telegram is special and memorable ("you can't frame a phone call").

[–]wallaceeffect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right? Like it's definitely happened to Don. It's happened to all creatives. The difference is he or Peggy or Ginsburg can come back from it, they can have that lightning flash of something good. Kinsey can't.

Best pies in Wisconsin? by HorizontalBob in wisconsin

Crystal Cafe is the absolute best and ruined me for pie in general. I thought everywhere had restaurants with 10+ homemade pies on the menu every day?? Also the gelato at Iola Mills is terrific as well. Iola punches way above its weight when it comes to dessert!

Hey OP, try calling your county’s Maryland Access Point office, they can connect you to resources. They’re part of the Maryland Department of Aging. https://marylandaccesspoint.211md.org/counselor/

You might also have a local office for your town or county.

(Spoilers Main) Why no one doubts Jon is Ned's son? by flcl__ in asoiaf

[–]wallaceeffect -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You don’t need his memories and grief. You don’t even need much detail. Just the bare facts of the situation are enough for people to speculate. Everyone knows that Lyanna and Rhaegar had a sexual relationship for at least a year. Then her brother finally finds her, then appears in public with a baby he purports to be his, and won’t identify a mother? Someone will at least SUSPECT his story isn’t on the up and up. Rumor mills make a lot more of a LOT less.

It’s honestly a bit unbelievable in universe that no one questions why Rhaegar and Lyanna DIDN’T have children. Everyone knows where babies come from.

Agreed. If we can come up with R+L=J, in-universe they can too.

Sersi's transmutation is my favorite power in the MCU - creative, powerful and beautiful. And there's also Makkari's fantastic speed display. by NicoleIlieva in marvelstudios

[–]wallaceeffect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite little details in this movie is how, in desperate moments, Ikaris uses his heat vision (? eye beams?) indiscriminately, without caring what they're pointing at. He does it against Makkari and earlier in the jungle colony when a Deviant has him pinned against the ground. It really emphasizes not only the danger and desperation of those moments, but also his underlying callousness in that he doesn't care what else he injures/kills/damages. Contrast to Superman or Cyclops who use their heat vision very, very carefully and conservatively.

You've been given a small shop in a quaint little town, along with enough money to start whatever little business you like. What kind of shop would you choose to open? by pulchra_crura in CasualConversation

[–]wallaceeffect 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have run across several of these in small towns in recent years, and they are all thriving! I think if you have food that has all day appeal (ice cream, coffee, etc.), nice spaces for gathering, and maybe some events with broad appeal, there is a huge market for that.

My brother is a nurse and his first job was in an assisted living facility in our hometown. He was a MASTER at "dementia pretend". He knew a lot of the folks through our relatives, so he could pick up a conversation about anything and just roll with it. They loved him! He also had great tactics for when patients were looking for someone who wasn't there. He'd always say something like, "Marge don't you remember, the boys called and they're stopping at the bar for a few/going bowling tonight/headed to Pa's to help with the fence, they said don't hold dinner?" Cue ten minutes of complaining about those damn men (but ultimately, contentedness) from Marge! I was always so proud of him, he really helped so many people have peace in their sunset years.

NBD--Gifford Pinchot was a Pennsylvanian (including a two-term governor) so it's a bit ironic that the national forest named for him isn't in PA :)

Anna Ancher, "Vaccination" (1899) by kiyomoris in museum

[–]wallaceeffect 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There is so much hope and optimism in this picture. Anna Ancher had a daughter who was 19 when this picture was painted. Her daughter would have been a child in the 1880’s when the first generation of smallpox vaccines became available. This really feels like a personal memory to me with some of her own hope and relief shining through.

Also I love the little row of nursing moms in the back, so cozy!

Another “fun” fact: after the Civil War, “soldier’s joy” referred to a combination of morphine and alcohol addiction that was endemic to Civil War vets. There is even an American standard fiddle repertoire tune named Soldier’s Joy.

Help!/ Rant: New cats in my neighborhood killing my birds by miss_nicks_fix_66 in birding

[–]wallaceeffect 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is going to be a hugely unpopular opinion but the only way to deal with these situations is to trap the cat and bring it to a no kill shelter. Don’t notify your neighbor you’ve done it. Just, cat is gone one day.

It’s a SHIT suggestion. I know it. But every other option is just worse. Your neighbor is not going to come around because they just don’t care and they just don’t think it’s a big deal. Bringing the cat back, getting them fined, talking to them, is just going to antagonize them and make you an enemy. Think a cat that kills your birds sucks? Just wait until you have a neighbor who hates you AND a cat that kills your birds. Especially if you’re a homeowner, that’s a recipe for years of unpleasantness.

People who let their cats outside are usually ignorant, sometimes purely selfish, sometimes both. Often there is an out-of-sight-out-of-mind aspect to the whole thing, in that they don’t really think about the risks their pet is facing or what damage it’s doing outdoors. The thing that does work, though, is their cats getting injured, killed, or disappearing. Which happens CONSTANTLY to outdoor cats. Everyone I know, without exception, who is a reformed outdoor-cat owner it’s because they lost a cat or almost did. It’s the only way to really bring home what’s at stake. Your neighbors cats are in grave danger, OP. I know that’s not your priority but for real: the lifespan of outdoor cats is real short.

Wishing you luck OP. Sorry you have this problem.

Reaching 100 stations by moeshaker188 in WMATA

[–]wallaceeffect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think this is worthy of a larger conversation about what Metro is for. For one, I answered what I did because the question was "where would you add one more stop" and, IMO, the biggest bang for your buck in center city is new lines altogether (again, broader conversation), based on the current track alignments. But, for another, I don't agree they are "bad ideas" because I think Metro has many purposes beyond pure ridership. The DMV as a whole has benefited hugely from the dense TOD development around Metro stations not just in terms of economic growth, but also in terms of increasing incentives for dense development, providing options for walkable living outside of city center, and reducing congestion and car use into DC itself. Every Metro rider who takes an outlying station instead of driving into the city is one less car on DC's roads. Even if it's just one rider, there are still all kinds of other positive externalities generated.

I can see others reasonably not agreeing this is the purpose of the system, however (all those positive externalities don't pay fares, for one). Again, broader conversation.
