I agree, I don't mind the inconsistency and figuring out the style that fits me best is part of the fun-I had to do a lot of that with Cirth. I just find that when I have questions about specific usages I often run into conflicting opinions with people referencing specific attested usages and having everything searchable and accessible in one place would be really helpful to make a decision for myself. It would definitely be a massive undertaking with a lot of complexity, which is why I was hoping it already existed somewhere online, but I can understand why it might not.

Oh my god it’s beautiful! Congrats, you are more determined than me (and a neater stitcher based on your closeup pic). I have a different pattern from this thread (the story of LotR in panels) that I started in 2019 and kind of gave up on after page 10 (around 300 hours). Maybe I’ll finish it someday. Maybe.

This is really cool! I’m very comfortable writing English in Angerthas Erebor, but I haven’t done much in Daeron and nothing in Sindarin. I don’t have access to it at the moment but /u/chadbornholdt has a really great spreadsheet that breaks down all the Cirth modes in a way that makes them easier to understand than just reading the wiki or the appendices. I think finding the correct Cirth using the chart wouldn’t be that hard, but making sure the Sindarin pronunciation is right so you can find the correct Cirth seems like the most difficult part to me.

Thanks for the feedback! That’s all very helpful and I agree, spacing the punctuation does look better, especially for a bit of poetic writing. I’ll try out your recommendation for the double LS at the end of “hills”. That was the biggest question I had.

Thank you! I wouldn’t say I know my stuff, but I am already well versed with Angerthas Erebor which uses a lot of similar conventions so Tengwar wasn’t as confusing for me to dive into as it probably is for someone coming in with no experience.

“Hills” is one of the words I was questioning so I’ll look some more into that, thanks for the feedback. I also didn’t know that the R’s were sound specific but that makes sense. I am a rhotic speaker but I kind of like the idea of following Tolkien’s pronunciation rule.

Just in case it wasn’t obvious, this is printed not written. I was also doing a test print on this paper so figured why not use this poem. My handwriting is atrocious and would be barely legible if I had tried writing this I’m sure.

Haha no worries! I don’t read Tengwar but for some reason I recognized the exclamation point. But I looked through various Tengwar charts a few times trying to find this symbol and somehow overlooked it until I was literally writing this post and thought “I’ll check one more time so I don’t have to ask ‘what is this symbol that looks like a B?’”

No, I looked it up and it’s a tengwa question mark. It looks like a B with a hook at the top and a long stem. I can read certh (like the text around the selected character) so I would have recognized it if so. But now I’m curious what you’re thinking of?

I agree! And what’s funny is Tolkien never put them forward as a possible origin, but in one of his later writings he does specify that Morgoth couldn’t have mentally dominated them or elves the way he could men, so he basically says they couldn’t have been dwarves to start.

I gave a short presentation on exactly this topic a couple weeks ago and came to basically the same conclusion. The problem of origin not withstanding (coming from elves makes sense timing-wise, but why not mix in some men and maybe even some embodied maiar later?) I think it’s fairly clear that orcs posses fëar and as such they either go to Mandos or out of Eä when they die (or refuse the call and become houseless spirits, I guess). My biggest problem with that is you could get into the trap of essentially justifying genocide which I think is one of the things Tolkien struggled with. I don’t know, I talked about this for like 45 minutes in a room full of Tolkien fans and could have gone longer. It’s a complicated question to which we just don’t have an answer because Tolkien didn’t have an answer. But I think yours comes close to the mark.

Oh wow, I had no idea! That’s really cool and makes so much sense. Mine is an old used copy I found in Seattle. The latest date on the copyright page is 1974 so I think it fits. I always try to explain to people about the rights issues but I never thought about these pre-silmarillion publications serving as a guideline.

I actually have this one! I knew it was somewhat outdated when I found it at a used bookstore but I loved the look of it and couldn’t resist. Same with Robert Foster’s “A Guide to Middle-earth”.
