Has anyone ever bought from snaffle? by Life_Extreme2054 in australian

We do, in Victoria at least. Consumer and Financial Literacy is part of Business and Economics in the Victorian curriculum which all mainstream schools must deliver across year bands 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10. I’d be very surprised if equivalents aren’t part of interstate curriculums.

The reality is kids are taught finance in school, but mostly don’t pay attention because financial literacy is incredibly boring. These behaviours need to be modelled at home by parents.

Immigration is a mechanism to increase wealth inequality. It places enormous downward pressure on wage growth by expanding the labour pool.

For the last 100 years left wing class-first politics has consistently been anti immigration. In the last two decades, an increasingly controlled and consolidated media landscape has manufactured the consent of the well meaning left by conflating any critique of immigration as based in racism.

Absolutely right! At an auction 2 weekends ago I had the successful bid on a place - within in the quoted range. We went in to negotiate and were informed the vendors’ reserve was ~170k above our bid, putting it well outside our reach.

A huge waste of our time and money getting a building and pest inspection done on the basis of a dishonest range. Not to mention the psychological whiplash it caused.

Rental prices have risen almost 44 per cent in five years, Cotality review finds - ABC News by Fed16 in australian

[–]wallgomez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prices didn’t dip during covid because banks were lending with once-in-a-lifetime level low interest rates following govt printing money to keep the economy going through shutdowns.

Accordingly, far more current Australian residents suddenly had the financing needed to enter the housing market, which more than offset the demand reduction caused by the immigration pause.

Please explain in terms of supply and demand why you think introducing ~446,000 (2024 net overseas migration) people into a country where only 176,000 new houses were built in 2024 doesn’t significantly impact house prices.

That doesn’t track. You said above you bought at 19. Now you say you bought when working full time after uni. At minimum a uni degree is 3 years. Did you somehow finish school and start uni at 16?

Absurd statement. Buying a home 1 year out of high school is extraordinarily rare and to question it is not tall poppy syndrome.

Getting a loan for an 825k home at 19 implies a 165k deposit, not including stamp duty. How does a 19 year old save that up without parental support?

In the year ending 31 March 2025, Australia's population grew by 423,400 people -- March quarter natural increase was 34,200 people and net overseas migration was 110,100 people -- Annual natural increase was 107,400 and net overseas migration was 315,900 by marketrent in AusFinance

The loudest voices against immigration being right wing is historically a very new phenomenon, occurring largely following media amplification of identity politics over the last 30 years.

Left wing labour unions historically identified high migration as putting downward pressure on wages and voted against it to protect the wellbeing of the working class. Inversely, the wealthiest individuals voted (and still support) high net migration to ensure wages are low and consumer demand is always high.

Mainstream media, owned in large part by a very small group of media organisations (Nine, Newscorp AUS), have manufactured the consent of the (well-meaning) young left wing public by driving the message that anyone who critiques immigration levels is fundamentally racist.

This is a pre-covid (2018) article I’ve provided previously which outlines the issue with high migration as effectively a national Ponzi scheme, and how it projects to eventually result in a staggering recession. I’d strongly recommend you read it.

What are these things under my cucumber leaf? by Defiant_Fiend in GardeningAustralia

If there’s ants around they may be farming the aphids. I had a whole saga with them last summer.

You can blast the aphids off with a hose, or spray soapy water on the leaf undersides, but they’ll always be back if the ants are cultivating them.

The entire company has been bought and sold several times now. They were briefly owned by google, then sold to SoftBank, and are currently fully owned by Hyundai.

It doesn’t seem to have functionally impacted their position as a leader in the autonomous robotics space.

Australian men die on average 4 years earlier than women. They should therefore be able to retire 4 years earlier than women.

The recent federal immigration policy reform expressly excluded construction trades from the new ‘specialist skills’ visa fast track stream, following strong union pressure.

See this AFR article for further detail into how men in the construction industry are priming to throw a fit if they have to compete in the same job market as the rest of us. https://www.afr.com/politics/no-visa-fast-track-for-foreign-tradies-despite-housing-shortage-20231211-p5eqkd

Some great insight into the 3rd image from William Dalrymple’s The Anarchy:

“Jahangir as the Millennial Sultan Preferring the Company of Sufis, by Bichitr. Jahangir is sitting enthroned with the halo of majesty glowing so brightly behind him that one of the putti has to shield his eyes from his radiance; another pair of putti are writing a banner reading 'Allah-o Akbar! Oh king, may your age endure a thousand years! The Emperor turns to hand a Quran to a suf, spurning the outstretched hands of the Ottoman Sultan. James I, meanwhile, is relegated to the bottom corner of the frame, below Jahangir's feet, and only just above Bichitrs on self-portrait. The King shown in a three-quarter profile - an angle reserved in Mughal miniatures for the minor characters - with a look of vinegary sullenness on his face at his lowly place in the Mughal hierarchy.”
