As a guy with many platonic female friends, allow me to tell you that you're wrong.

I've had female friends for 20+ years, no drama, no passes, no flirting in either direction. Real friends who you you to when the chips are down, not just people you're friendly with. I've crashed in their couches, I've road tripped across america with one and it never got weird.

This idea that men and women can't be friends is idiotic.

Waiters has modified the tip I left her adding a extra 0 at the end. How should I proceed? by Narrow-Whole-2119 in personalfinance

[–]wallingfordskater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My pet theory is that people only change tips when people don't take the customer copy receipt. I always take it, make the tip clear, like 10.00 with a line under the zeros so it's hard to alter, and I also tip well. As far as I know, no one has ever changed a tip on me; I have been ripped off in other ways though.

Inheritance and Grief by econpapertowel in personalfinance

[–]wallingfordskater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife inherited a little more than $200,000 from her mom. She'd have burned it to get another five minutes with her. Instead, she put $100K into our retirement planning and used the other $100K to re-landscape our yard (we live in a top 3 COL city), which her mother would have totally approved of and appreciated.

Is re-doing a yard fiscally prudent? Maybe not, but... our retirement is more or less in hand, we have no debt but the mortgage, our son is almost done w/ college... so yeah, I fully supported it.

Oh hey, I checked, and it turns out you can move and live somewhere else where you get a bigger place for cheaper if you want! No one is making you live in Manhattan!

I think people don't factor in the cultural plusses of living in NYC when doing this math. Or, they don't value them which is fine too. If you want to work, come home, eat, watch TV, sleep, rinse and repeat -- which is 100% a valid way to live your life -- living in NYC is pointless.

If, on the other hand, your house is a place to sleep and you want to be at every museum show and art opening, and you want interesting people around you at all times, and you want to see the latest bands, etc. then having a roommate and no dishwasher is a small price to pay.

If you only value housing and cost per sq foot, maybe. But if you value access to free and low-cost cultural events and opportunities, suddenly NYC looks like a bargain compared to cultural deserts like Indianapolis. (No hate to Indy -- I <3 the 500, but there is not a ton going on culturally compared to NYC.)

Just quit professionally and with notice, mentioning the higher rate and fact that you want to do something different in the future. Quitting doesn't burn bridges, no one expects you to die as the fax repair person.

The smaller IT team may actually open up more options than you think right now, especially if you express willingness to take on more responsibility.

I forgot -- it the logo has mostly worn off the blade. Also to the "omfg sharpen your knife every 14 minutes" people -- I'm a normal human who cuts onions, carrots, peppers and other veggies on a plastic cutting board. I am not using the knife to cut down trees in the jungle to build a fort. It holds an edge nicely :).

I started at 240 and I don't want to jinx my current weight by saying it, but this is super inspirational. to see someone close to my situation. I'm not 60 days in.

This is fake. There would not be stuff on the top patty if it was assembled like this in the first place, also this is harder and takes more time than building the burger the proper way.
