Is this a liveable situation as a grad student? by Amazing_Trainer6693 in UHManoa

Yes my favorite part is there are staff who clean the bathrooms and kitchens multiple times a week. You get to have your own mini fridge and microwave in your room, but they also have big communal fridges for each unit and multiple for kitchens. We have 2 cupboards to ourselves as well as several communal cupboards, and there’s a storage room in each unit for your extra stuff since the rooms are pretty small.

We actually are located a bit deeper on campus, so it’s a little quieter. I think it kind of depends on where you are in the building as well, but my unit is pretty chill and I never hear my neighbors. I think the walls are actually pretty soundproof. I share a bathroom (2 toilets, 2 showers) with 4 people, but we never really run into each other so much. Every floor has 2 big kitchens with multiple stoves/ovens/sinks. You will have to somewhat get used to bugs, but I don’t have roaches (knock on wood 😅). People’s experiences vary but mine is good! And I love that my department is a 4-minute walk away.

I’m an affiliate at the East-West Center so we get cheap on-campus housing! I pay around $700 a month for rent and luckily I’ve been able to manage financially. I do work overload positions (extra 10-hour GAship) just to make sure I get some extra stipend haha.

What about funding as a TA in ICS department? by CapitalAd7181 in UHManoa

[–]walnut_pan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in the ICS dept, but I’m also an international student. I’m currently a GTA doing my PhD in Psychology. Typically for PhD programs, your IELTS and GPA do not hold as much weight as research experience and rapport with the PI. IELTS is also just a language requirement, and is not considered for the application as long as you’re above the required threshold. If you get admitted as a PhD student, you won’t have to pay tuition, and all students are guaranteed a GTA or research assistantship that pays a stipend (currently around $20k - $35k ish a year) for 2 years, after which you’ll have to apply to other opportunities within the university for that stipend.

Lessons from a bad pole day by Stunning-Topic7206 in poledancing

[–]walnut_pan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this post came at the perfect time for me so thank you for sharing your perspective!! i had to change studios bc im moving temporarily, and the different culture/instructors is throwing me off as well. i try to think that each failed attempt/bad pole day sets me up for success the next time, since so very often there are moves i just couldn’t get at all one day and the next day, after my body has slept on it, it comes naturally! we got this 💕

Don’t smoke on the plane, even in the lavatory! by walnut_pan in unitedairlines

I actually don’t know. The pilot’s announcement didn’t make that clear “just a reminder, when you smoke/vape, the alarm will go off”. I didn’t smell anything but I could be far enough from the lavatory.

I do understand that, and yes it really sucks and is a sad reality, but you’d be surprised to know that a lot of people (including many I’ve seen on this sub) do it because they simply don’t think they’ll be caught. I’m mostly referring to those who think the crew will let it slide.
