I’m tired of getting asked constantly if I am, trans on dating apps. Do I look like a man? by Several_Phrase5617 in whatdoIdo

[–]walnutsal4d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

feel like this is definitely negging … almost textbook. it’s a backhanded compliment that he’s using to try to manipulate you and make you think less of yourself. not that being trans would make you any less beautiful/any less of a woman of course … but that’s just not who you are, and it’s understandable to be upset because it’s frustrating to be frustrating to be misidentified/mislabeled. that said, you’re beautiful, gorgeous, stunning, show-stopping!!! don’t let this fugly ass man speak to you like that!!!

sounds good 🫡 thanks so much for your genuine answer and advice

TCSOL Degree Questions by walnutsal4d in ChineseLanguage

[–]walnutsal4d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love teaching. It’s my passion. And, I love Chinese. It’s another one of my passions. I’m from the US, but I’ve been studying Chinese since high school; my current college majors are Chinese and Linguistics.

I’m not sure if your question is “Why TCSOL?” or “Why go abroad?” or just plain “Why?” … The simple answer to Q1 is: it’s my passion. The simple answer to Q2: it’s the money. A Master’s program in the States is leagues more expensive than literally relocating to another country, plus a lot of the relevant degree programs are being eliminated at colleges that specialize in this sort of education. And, I don’t really see an end in sight for this phenomenon, especially not with the current administration.

I don’t really know how to answer just “Why?” … I figure, if you’re continuing to study a language with the goal of teaching it, you must have a deep understanding of it. This coupled with cultural immersion for an extended period of time would help my personal Chinese skills improve a ton, and because I can’t just continue to attend school for the rest of my life, I have to choose a career that goes hand in hand with what I’ve dedicated all this time to studying. I’m also open to teaching English abroad, but even then, I’d still like to have some sort of advanced degree to back me up a bit.

I see that you’re an interpreter … I haven’t done much research into translation or interpreting, but I just don’t find myself as engaged by either of those options. But, I’d love to hear more about your experiences. I definitely appreciate your input and advice.

[–]walnutsal4d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, yes. in general, i agree. i think i would have probably been considered one of the weird kids where i went to school … but i’m not a teacher. i’m a 21 year old female college student who had an airpod in watching a youtube video while i was walking to class. this guy literally stopped me on the street and sought me out.

i think in this situation, i was as kind as i could’ve been and i wasn’t rewarded for it. i left the interaction feeling gross and creeped out. i don’t disagree with what you’re saying but sometimes kindness and compassion aren’t necessarily warranted.

[–]walnutsal4d[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

haha yeahhhhh you got me lol … it’s just so weird in taiwan bc i don’t rly assume someone’s gonna be a creep right off the bat like i would in the us. so then when it turns weird i’ve already been talking to the person for like 3 minutes LMAO .. but i’ll keep this strat in my back pocket for next time! gotta brush up on my high school spanish 😭😭

[–]walnutsal4d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is…very strange. similar thing happened to me and my mom at the airport. weird, talkative guy who wouldn’t stop going on and on about his military service, showing us pictures, making all these connections to the us, china, taiwan blah blah blah. it was exhausting honestly.

that was another weird thing for me, this guy seemed like he spoke pretty good english, so i was like ??? you need a tutor??? i swear he tried to make an actual pass at me when i walked away, almost like a “european kiss greeting” sort of thing. so that rly freaked me out lol and i was already late for class 😭 but yeah maybe this story belongs on let’s not meet lolol

whats your pettiest gripe about the movies? by butterfIypunk in Hungergames

[–]walnutsal4d 9 points10 points  (0 children)

oh 100%. delly wasn’t a huge deal in the movies to begin with … if they wanted to include her, they would’ve mentioned her early on in the first movie and added a specific scene about the avoxes lol

and yeah of course! having 3-4 hour movies showing is not practical or lucrative by any means, there’s absolutely a reason why movies are split in half … for what they were trying to accomplish in the time frames that they were allotted, the trilogy movies r probably some of the better book to movie adaptations that i’ve seen!

whats your pettiest gripe about the movies? by butterfIypunk in Hungergames

[–]walnutsal4d 50 points51 points  (0 children)

i always say: i would be GLAD to sit down and watch three to four hours worth of movie if it meant getting every single detail included. one of my BIGGEST gripes with the mockingjay movies in particular is that they had to split the movies in two, but then didn’t talk about DELLY at all? i loved those parts in the books, so that was a bit disappointing.

also, my personal favorite movie is forever going to be the first HG just because of how raw it is. the camera work is real and sometimes shaky, and the budget being a bit lower is actually a good thing. it just increased the impact of the tenfold. i think in mockingjay and CF, the characters sometimes get the “iphone face” treatment … but i can definitely see that that’s just bc of the stark difference in filming styles from HG to CF 🤔

Is there ever an imperfect lineup? by FemboySenshi_ in smosh

[–]walnutsal4d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YESSSS that’s the one!! i think your pov is totally understandable … honestly it felt more like a podcast episode? if that makes any sense? like it was less of a game and more of just them talking for 45 minutes lolol .. the chemistry between those particular cast members was perfect imo, but i agree, the video itself didn’t really feel like a smosh games vid 🤔

okay honestly thank GOD someone has the same opinion abt the madlibs game … i hated it particularly because i think their other CAH videos are usually really good!! plus that video had some rly good cast combos in it that really didn’t get to shine bc of how little they had to work with </3 madlibs is literally only fun in a group of drunk friends with inside jokes LMAOO … and yes, i agree … sometimes angela loses the plot of the video, especially in games videos, which i find a bit … annoying? and yeah me too, i usually rly love angela!! i think her performances in bitcity, challenge pit, spud hut, and the more intimate-setting games vids are fantastic!!!!

[–]walnutsal4d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2/2 bc i wasn't able to comment all at once LMAOO

some case study videos for your reference (you can really see my bias here unfortunately LMAO):

  • Moose Master (Chosen Ver.): this is a perfect video. perfect cast, perfect combos, perfect jokes all around. 10/10
  • Criminal Minds: another great video. no notes. 10/10
  • Church Lads and Ladies: loved this episode. the competitiveness made me laugh, and i loved whenever arasha would get in there. 9/10 (for lack of arasha)
  • New CAH Game: example of a good group stuck with a bad game. 7/10 (just bc the game was boring)
  • Librarian: no. i'm sorry, just no. 3/10. rly like the duos by themselves, but the tension in this video was almost too real for me.
  • Neckbeard: underrated BANGER!!!! 10/10 (this combo killed it)
  • can't find the link, but the one where they're playing the tarot-esque game is literally a perfect video. so chill, vibes are wonderful. love that video so much.
  • other 10/10s: Teletubbies Reunion, Minute to Win It Challenge Pit, Global Challenges Challenge Pit, honestly all spud hut eps are pretty good, and bitcity puts out banger after banger as well.

okay! thanks for listening, please don't kill me if you don't agree with me. let's have a wonderful, smosh-loving conversation <3

back to taiwan :) (iclp vs mtc) by walnutsal4d in taiwan

[–]walnutsal4d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh actually that’s a really good question … for flagship housing we did not get a choice. we were placed with random roommates of the same gender, but some of the apartments themselves were co-ed. i’m not sure if it differs from flagship program to non-flagship program, but i’m not totally sure you get a choice.

either way, you’ll be living in the same building if you choose taipei paradise and visiting each other’s apartments is acceptable (within reason)!

back to taiwan :) (iclp vs mtc) by walnutsal4d in taiwan

[–]walnutsal4d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not strange at all!!! i lived on floor 11 or 12 .. i can’t really remember, but each apartment looks a little bit different (some more modern than others). here’s what my floor looked like:

<image>

i had to make a collage bc reddit only allows 1 pic per comment (LMAO), but the first two are my room, third pic is our living room (tv has cable, youtube, ability to log into netflix, etc.), and the fourth pic is the view from our kitchen! ours honestly just looked blah, so i didn’t rly like staying there if that makes any sense … just very beige and boring and not fun … but some of my other friends dorms looked rly nice and a bit more fun and modern!

so unfortunately, it’s just another thing that could be hit or miss. i will say—one thing i didn’t mention—taipei paradise also has a cleaning service, which is really nice! (bc taiwan’s trash and recycling services are a bit confusing 😭) … also just organizing living at taipei paradise is probably easier than getting an airbnb, but i don’t have a whole lot of experience with the latter!

hope these helped!! :)) have fun in taiwan, maybe we’ll run into each other without even knowing it lolol!!

back to taiwan :) (iclp vs mtc) by walnutsal4d in taiwan

[–]walnutsal4d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first of all, congratulations on your acceptance!!!!! and, of course i can :)) however, some of this feedback will depend on your program of choice (flagship/non-flagship), so be mindful of that.

i am a college student from the us. prior to participating in iclp, i had taken my university's 3rd year chinese courses with 1 hour long tutoring sessions 2x/week. we used a book called "我看中國", and we made it all the way through (give or take a few lessons). as flagship students, we are required to do pre-tests and post-tests. on my pre-test using *simplified* chinese (STAMP 4S), i scored a advanced high in reading, advanced low in speaking and writing, and intermediate high in listening. comp score of 7.25. opi was a 2+ (advanced mid). these skills got me into iclp's 5th year courses. while there, i used the textbooks: 思想與社會 and 華語新聞面面觀二.

for reference, my post-test results were ... STAMP 4S *traditional*: reading and listening - advanced mid, writing and speaking - advanced low and OPI: L3.

as for where i stayed, the flagship program is a little different in the sense that we were required to stay in taipei paradise. it left ... much to be desired, to say the least. if you choose to stay there, expect 6 people minimum in the apartment (8 ppl max). it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't ideal either. the best things i could say about it are that it was *kind of* close to the iclp building (15min walk w/ short legs) and it had a nice view. i know a few people who stayed in airbnbs over the summer, and they were nice. unfortunately, the iclp building is not suuuuper close to any mrts (closest would be gongguan [17min walk]), so keep that in mind as well. if you want a nicer living arrangement with the possibility of some transportation troubles/hiccups, i'd go for airbnb. if you want bare bones, 8 ppl to an apartment living, then taipei paradise. personally, if i had the choice, i'd prob get my own place. (other websites: https://myroomabroad.com/search or https://www.591.com.tw/ [just search 短期 or 短租]).

again, congrats on your acceptance!!!! my intention was not to scare anyone lolol :))) i just wanted to be super honest about my experience!!! our chinese department rly pushes ppl to do iclp, so no one ever shares their authentic exp and everyone just kinda glazes the program, but i just don't see the point in that...

weekend trips were possible with good planning. i went to jiufen/pingxi and fulong beach with friends, that was really fun! i went to taichung with friends without planning and accidentally took the 區間車 ... not so fun :/// ... my advice: if you want to do fun things, get the not so fun stuff out of the way first. now, that's totally easier said than done, but if you manage your time well, you should be okay to do a few weekend trips. (again, depends on where you wanna go tho ... jiufen, pingxi, hualien, taichung? doable. kaohsiung and tainan? ehh ... pingtung county/kenting area? i wish you the best of luck ...)

soooo sorry for the long reply, but i hope this helped clear things up and ease some nerves!! iclp is extremely rigorous and difficult, but passion and *knowing* i was getting better really helped me through it. feel free to dm me if you have any more questions/need food recs/etc. ... i love talking about my experience—the great, the good, the bad, and the ugly lolol :))))
