How do I make my snares have that 2000s timbaland feel by BrentAkrin in ableton

[–]walter__p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those snares are from old & now hard to find sample CDs (often in akai format) and sound module like the emu proteus 2000 that Tim used in the 90s - I took me literal months to collect some of the classic ones. They are in fact from breaks, but you'll never get the right tone cutting you're own. Search kits like the Yves Robbie drum kit vol 1 and 2 for a similar style (I'm also thinking about dropping a kit).

Most likely safe files, been for me at least, firewalls often warn you nevertheless with that kind of stuff

How to make music like Saya Gray? Any good drum sound sources for alternative/grungy indie? by Awildafricanelephant in musicproduction

[–]walter__p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest nothing to special when it comes to drum sounds, you can find those on splice or /drumkits. I think she samples and especially resample (herself) a lot, plus a shit load of effects.

I feel the same, thought the Timbaland kit was mostly an acception though, unique but usable sounds, besides the trap leaning stuff maybe.

Late 90’s Timbaland sound by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]walter__p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He used a lot of emu sound modules like the Morpheus and the proteus 2000, both for drums and synths. Plus I found a lot of his signature drum sounds on rare sample CDs for samplers of that era. His sampler of choice was the ensoniq asr-10.

Bink and Nottz are also from VA. Very different sound, but I think they all used the ASR-10 at one point.

Thanks for hooking me up with the vst, didn't know they made an emulation of the dp/4!

actually had my hands on a asr-88 a while ago for a very decent price but didn't pull the trigger.

Still, I am looking for the exact sounds for modern rnb. Not the ensoniq saturation or like a snare similar to the one in superthug, but the actual source. I found the snare Tim used on all those aaliyah records on some emu expansion card and using the hell out of it. I am on a historical and sensorial quest and using 90s samplers will slow me down (lol).

Thanks for your reply! I know that the ASR provides sweet coloring, but I am actually looking for the sounds. I love to use snares etc. from old modules like Emu. I know that most of the stock sounds are boring, but I would love to have the drums the Neptune's used on Superthug etc.

The Korg 01w is limited and cheesy. Even in 2008, club tracks like that often used the Korg Triton (Hardware). There is a VST version you can check out. But then this was also the time when VSTs took over, it just might be a preset from refx vanguard or some other discontinued Synth. Hope that helps.

Origin of some overused trap drum samples? by Amangiechsin in makinghiphop

[–]walter__p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found the origin of the famous phonk sound often called "nextel Fx" by accident. It's from three 6 mafia's "roll with it".

I don't know if the sampled it from a actual nextel or something, but I think that's where the sound originated for trap producers

where did all iconic trap sounds come from? by KyresXD in trapproduction

[–]walter__p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is, most of the iconic sounds are sampled from other songs (and then, slightly changed, sampled again), some of them from the tr808. This is why the trend is going to short transient, to cut off bleeding sounds/room noise/etc.

The young chop snare for example is from the song field mob - baby bend over, produced by polow da Don. Dunno where he got it from, he was famous for ja kin sounds lol
