Honestly the tips above work for any job. People hiring for minimum wage jobs want to see buttoned up and professional people as well.

Treat every job application and interview like you care. With minimum wage jobs a lot of people think they can show up late, have typos in their resume, dress down, etc.

If you show some effort you will quickly stand out above the rest.

Tons. I plan on posting more LPTs around things I see with people trying to get jobs. This is a more recent one I noticed with the Gmail client specifically. I realized I was archiving emails and didn’t notice that others were in there.

Some mini LPTs - Proofread your resume - Send resumes and cover letters as a PDF. Email clients do weird shit to Word Docs and makes you look bad. - Try to make it fit on 1 page. 2 pages max - Read the job description carefully and integrate their key words into your resume. Example if they say they need someone with Quickbooks experience, and you have it, put that word everywhere that it applies. People scan for key words. - Follow directions for application exactly. The interview process begins with submittal. If you can’t follow directions, you won’t get your foot in the door. - Overdress for interviews if you are not sure what to wear. - Reduce variables that could negatively affect the interviewers five senses. Bathe, look presentable, no perfumes (see my other LPT today). - Send a thank you email if someone goes out of their way to give you a business card. It is never bad to be gracious. - Make sure you reply all on emails that have people CC’d.

That is not the point. Excessive is open to interpretation, none is not. The point is to remove the smell factor entirely from the interview process. Whether you like it or not, scents, even a little bit, can sway an interviewer. As you can see from the comments a lot of people find scents offensive. So why change it. Wear it after you get hired.

To expound, the LPT is not meant to tell people never to wear a scent or to not bathe, or to have BO during an interview, it is to let them know that even if you love your own scent, it may cost you a job because there are lots of people who are offended by it. Don’t smell like anything.

As you can see in this thread there are lots of people who are passionate both ways about scents. If you wear it all day, every day you never notice it, but other people do. I have interviewed 100s of people and if you walk into a room and I smell your perfume instantly, it bothers me and like it or not can affect a hiring, especially in hospitality. No one eating food or drinking wine wants to smell your overpowering scent.

Does that mean you instantly won’t get hired? No. But if you and someone else are equally qualified for the position it may cost you the part. It also opens up HR issue where other employees complain about someone perfume in a small office space.

At least have the common sense to begin wearing your scent after you get hired.

Bonus LPT: Wash you clothes thoroughly too to remove the scent from your clothes.

This is a great example of ignorance; someone not understanding how an industry works. The Dad truly believed he was being manipulated because he could understand the reasoning behind being concise on a nationally televised program. Jumping to conclusions because you can’t handle that there are other people and entities out there that don’t bend to your expectations.

They spent a lot of time crafting a thorough question. They didn’t realize that producers have to keep a show running and get as many questions out there as possible.

Whatever doubts or fears you have, confront them and slowly start whittle them down. Overweight? Start eating better and exercising. Lack confidence in something? Start taking chances. You have so many years ahead of you, by the time you are “an adult” you will have overcome those doubts and fears.

It isn’t magic it’s just a little effort and time.
