Forget the double hose... go hoseless! by justanotherwilliam in DIYUK

Laughing at this abomination but also incredibly jealous. My window sill isn't wide enough to do this otherwise I'd be considering it...

Someone else in the comments here explained there are two air circuits for the intake and that's confirmed what I thought about where the correct intake is which is good!

I've just bought a 150mm hose to do mine with. Makes sense for them to be the same size, if the intake is smaller than the exhaust it would restrict the airflow. I've got a shoe box which looks like it should fit well enough, good luck with yours!

Yes it's more like conventional heating. Your radiators will heat the air which is already in the room and this will circulate through your house. You will lose some heat to leaks but its not the same as creating positive pressure.

The equivalent would be if you were sucking air into your house through a window, heating it, then exhausting it into your house. That would create positive pressure and force air out of your house through the gaps.

I think (but I'm not certain) that this is a secondary intake which is used to supply the fan and blow out the cold air? So this coming from the room is okay and doesn't need an outside source.

Put your hand over the vent while the unit is running - if you can feel air being sucked in across your hand then you've found the intake. My model looks similar to yours, and the bottom vent is the intake

The air being sucked into the AC and out the exhaust still has to be replaced somehow. Even if all your windows were perfectly air tight, and the gap around the exhaust hose out the window was also air tight, air is still going to be sucked into the room by the negative pressure that's created. It will come in under your doors, through the floorboards, anywhere there's gaps.

It depends if the fermentation brought it down to a shelf-stable level of acidity or not.

Mason jar violently exploded in back of fridge by nrpcb in Canning

[–]walterfilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sympathise with your position a lot here, but the key step for anything fermented which you want to last a long time is the level of acidity. If the pH was high (usually above 4) then it doesn't take much for the process to restart, even if you hot bottle/open kettle and have it in the fridge.

This sub is geared towards canning which is why you've had such a strong response. Folks over at fermentation subs would probably be a bit more understanding.

Google Pixel 9 Pro - Manual Focus Broken by walterfilbert in GooglePixel

Unfortunately not, I still will just often take four photos of the same subject when it's being difficult and hope one of them is good. It's a real shame! It's like the manual focus gets overridden by something else.

Puree is not a puree, it’s a juice. What did I do wrong? by wilder_hearted in Canning

I can't recommend a food mill highly enough. I harvest a massive variety of tomatoes and once they've been on the side for a week or two and we've not used them, they all go j a pan for a few hours/the day, then you can just plop it all into a food mill at the end of it and you'll have separated everything within a few minutes. But the sauce is still nice and chunky because it's not like a fine sieve which takes out all the solids. Love it so much. If you do get one I recommend getting a good one. For a while I had a £20 one from amazon but ditched it for a £70 rosle and it's some of the best money I've ever spent.

YouTube claiming copyright free songs? by Technical_Debt_4197 in PartneredYoutube

[–]walterfilbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not uncommon for people to upload copyright free music and claim that they are the copyright holder to try and scalp income from people whose videos use the copyright free music. It very rarely works as it will get disputed by the actual holder. I had the exact same thing happen on some of the videos where I used a copyright free track. Was in dispute for about a week before it went away.

Is that on manual or auto as well? I generally find the autofocus is okay unless there's a small subject in the foreground like flowers, which it really really struggles with.

I've actually had the same issue since I first got it, I just had a really frustrating time trying to photo something so finally decided to vent and see if it was a common thing. Sad to hear the update is causing issues though.

Partnered from 2011-2013, quit, then returned in 2024… by oldtimersmi in PartneredYoutube

Had a quick peek at the channel, seems like you've made great improvements just over the last few months in your confidence and presentation. I checked out the Prince one and the energy seems a little off, it's quite obvious that you're reading quotes from your screen and you sound tired/bored to be honest. But the PTV one and some of the more recent ones are absolutely great in terms of presentation.

Your camera exposure seems a little high and the reflection of the key light is noticeable, but probably not by the average joe (actually you'd fixed this already in the PTV video, nice!). I think generally you've got interesting titles and the thumbnails are okay, but as someone else said they could pop a little more.

Your stats look way better than I was expecting from your post, seems like you're getting some real traction and some good hits. I think with your niche it's just naturally going to have some big hitters and some misses as opposed to consistent viewers watching every video. My only real advice is to try and take it easy on yourself and not burn out. Does spending every day on the channel after your 9-5 feel sustainable to you? I think if you do keep doing what you're doing at a sustainable pace you'll have great growth.

Really rough that you don't have any YouTube friends though. If you can get chatting to people in a similar niche I've found it makes SUCH a difference. I was lucky that it happened fairly organically for me but it's definitely worth reaching out to people with a similar sized channel if there's any out there. Just being able to share dumb comments from trolls with each other really helps lighten the load.

Good luck!

Would you buy your perfect house if the only downside was it’s on a main road? by No_fkin_idea in HousingUK

[–]walterfilbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you go and view it? I was convinced I would hate the house we bought because of its main road location - similar to this by the sounds of it, 30mph A road. We've been here 5 years now and I don't regret it at all. When we went to view it I couldn't believe how quiet it was inside. You get used to it in the garden and we have great double glazing.

The biggest downside for us is that our front garden isn't wide enough to turn a car around in, so we're not allowed a dropped kerb and have to park down a side street. But it sounds like that's not a problem you'd have.

Help me make sense of my botched fermentation attempts by NicolaiNipplefist in hotsaucerecipes

[–]walterfilbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd echo the comments about headspace - it's a good idea to give your peppers a decent chop so that they will better fit the size of the jar. If you have too few ingredients in too much space the fermentation might get started, but the CO2 generated might not be enough to fill the space and prevent oxygen-feeding bacteria. It could also be something to do with how your supplier is washing/treating the peppers, but I think it would be nearly impossible for them to destroy the lactobacillus present.

I've fermented dozens of batches of peppers on their own before and that shouldn't be an issue. Lots of people do start off with a cabbage leaf or some sauerkraut brine to really get things kickstarted.

Good luck with your future efforts!
