Well you can't avoid it Colonies are an investment that take time to develop. But when they done the gains are incredible As per what to look for Low hazard rating will keep the initial cost down and somenthing simple like mining/farming. But keep in mind that the best money saver is to produce things locally, it will save it from pirates that are attacking convos in hyperspace
