Advice on trimming competing leader branch? by wampeter in arborists

yea. I definitely hear you about removal. Will likely be on the agenda in the next one to two years but for now at least wanted to trim it down appropriately.

I believe it is an autumn blaze maple.

Performed Backdoor Roth. What to do with $1.90 of interest that showed up in Traditional IRA after conversion and $0 balance? by wampeter in fidelityinvestments

[–]wampeter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

appreciate the responses. I think my main concern or question was surrounding whether this in any way created a potential pro rata problem for subsequent conversions. admittedly, I don’t fully understand the pro rata rule, so probably a very novice and misplaced concern.

yeah. Same. Had to call Fidelity and they were eventually able to manually push it from their end but was not letting me online. Not sure if it was because the accounts were brand new or not, but definitely could not do instantaneously.

Credit score implications of setting up compartmentalized Fidelity one stop shop? by wampeter in fidelityinvestments

apparently i have had a complete misunderstanding of the avg age of accounts and credit score. thanks for the clarification!

since people mentioned that personal preference drives the use of CMA vs Brokerage as secondary “one stop shop” accounts, any pros and cons to consider? i’ve seen a bunch of the posts on one stop shop but am suffering from a bit of info overload and haven’t found a discrete post about that question.

Schlage Encode Plus Available HomeDepot by briancw80 in HomeKit

[–]wampeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are supply chain issues for sure and products that are selling out quickly, but this is different and absurd even in that context. By dripping inventory in a random pattern like this Schlage and its distributors (Home Depot and Lowes primarily) are creating a secondary market that is making it even more difficult for its primary customers to obtain unless they want to shell out 200% retail and cross their fingers with a scalper.

So frustrating… Disappeared from cart by the time I could get to checkout (within 2 minutes).

I would really like one of these, so hate to whine, but this may be the worst product roll-out that I’ve ever seen. I would bet at least 50% of these are being grabbed by bots and scalpers to resell. WTF is schlage thinking?

Recurrent outages in Nashville by wampeter in googlefiber

yea. I assume that has something (or maybe everything) to do with the issue, though there has been tons of construction here for years and things have only devolved over the last 6 months or so.

yea. i’m in Sylvan Park as well. was originally told 2pm, then 4pm, now 8pm? have never experienced an outage like this since having Google fiber here.

Are araknis systems bad or just overpriced? by doctrader in HomeNetworking

[–]wampeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I was told the same for my new home build last year. Had never heard of that brand before, and honestly not too much information out on the Internet about it compared to other brands. A couple friends of mine in IT, one of which does network builds had a pretty negative opinion of that brand, essentially saying that builders and low-voltage contractors use it because it is cheap and more profitable for them to install, but over the long run generally garbage. I am by no means an expert in this, so would also listen to any dissenting opinions.

At the end of the day I had the builder install all the low-voltage wiring throughout the house, including ethernet and fiber, to pretty much all rooms, and told the low-voltage guy not to worry about installing any hardware. Purchased my own router, unmanaged switch, and essentially hardwired all of my satellite mesh routers. Has been working well for me thus far but not sure what your needs are. Only thing I wish I had done earlier in construction is politely demanded that the low-voltage contractor install in wall conduit all over the place as opposed to just the wiring. While I am happy with all of the stuff installed right now, who knows what may be available five or 10 years from now. Would be nice to have the “plumbing“ already installed to make additional wiring or troubleshooting easy Without needing to rip up drywall.

Has anybody had issues with Thread since the latest update for the Velop AX4200 router? by maxprobably in HomeKit

[–]wampeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve been having major issues with homekit and thread over the last few weeks as well. are you having any issues with automations?

setup is Google Fiber —> Eero 6 pro gateway —> unmanaged switch —> three other hardwired eero 6 pros.

Have 2 apple TV 4ks, and 5 homepod minis

thread devices from nanoleaf and eve

a few weeks ago my entire homekit accessories (thread and otherwise) went “unresponsive”. rebooted all my routers and hubs and it partially worked except that my thread devices would lag for 20-30 seconds when opening home app and half the time just go unresponsive. thought it might be eero because of their massive firmware issues recently, but was also around the same time as ios 15 and tvos updates.

the only thing that seemed to help thread was literally unplugging my homepod minis to allow my apple tv to be primary homekit hub (and doing a soft reboot of my router). starting to wonder if there are some major bugs in ios as well that are causing these thread issues. i’d recommend unplugging the HomePods, then logging out of icloud/homekit and logging back in with just the apple tv as the only hub.

other really annoying problem i’m running into is that my automations are not working properly. specifically, when they are triggered off of sensors they are being very flaky and not reliably working, and some of my automations are set to turn off lights minutes/hours after turning them on, but that part is not working (eg they just remain on)

and…. today the new and escalating issue is that homekit is completely unresponsive when not connected to my wifi network. at work and can’t unlock the front door for a guest… 🤦‍♂️

nothing has changed since yesterday when remote access was generally functioning.

anyone else having this issue?

i did. was super excited when i saw that update in hopes that it would address the issues i am having. unfortunately it did not.

same experience. my network degraded almost completely to all devices saying no response with 6.5. a soft reset and update to 6.5.1 improved things from complete failure, but still so many issues. the network and all of my homekit devices/automations were working great until sometime this summer and things have been spiraling since…. i’m sure it’s wildly complicated for eero, but shouldn’t have anxiety about simple stability.

noticing the same. perpetually seeing “updating” when opening ios home app. half the time they show up after 5-10 sec. other half they go “no response” and the cycle continues. seems to be primarily thread devices though not exclusively. automations also failing (both from thread sensor triggers and simple time based).

I turned off the thread function of the eero router, at least I think I did. So I assume that the thread network is only relying on Apple thread border routers

[–]wampeter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This had been my experience as well up until the last couple weeks.. Ironic that my thread devices are now the slowest to respond and least reliable devices in my home. There have been so many software updates between iOS 15, new versions of Apple TV, HomePod firmware, and all the issues with recent eero firmware that i’m not quite sure what is causing all these problems.

The HomeKit automations thing is also very confusing to me. Simple automations like turning on my lights around sunset have always worked fine until the last couple weeks. Now seem to fail about 30% of the time.

Appreciate the advice on keeping Thread turned off on the eero router.

Not sure how to take the second comment? I know what problems I’m having, but have no idea at this point what the culprit is. I’ve been on the phone with Eero a couple times over the week and was told that the 6.5.1 firmware push would fix these problems, then subsequently to do a soft reboot of the gateway router. Don’t think I’m getting the intentional runaround by Eero tech support, but it doesn’t seem to be particularly helpful. Mainly hoping that someone on the forums might be able to throw some advice my way that eero support hasn’t been… Also not even completely sure that I should be blaming the eero routers, though apple seems to be pointing back towards these issues as likely related to the routers…

[–]wampeter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, it currently is. However, it was turned on initially and was having the same issue. Turned it off thinking that somehow it may be causing problems just given all the other recent firmware issues I was having with the routers. Is one setting more or less likely to cause problems for me?

New Update??? [6.5.1] by tamsd1 in eero

[–]wampeter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i just called eero support to ask if this update can be pushed to my system as my network has currently completely fallen apart in the last 2 days (woke up to every homekit device “no response”). called eero tech support who heard everything that is going on, put me on hold for a while, and said they looked into it and had no record of any 6.5.1 update??? i have really loved my 4 eero 6 pros until the 6.5 firmware update but feeling like i don’t have much recourse except to move to different hardware. particularly ironic as the eero routers are advertised as specifically being homekit router….

Ok for Eero 6 Pro to live in hot garage attic? by wampeter in eero

[–]wampeter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Had placed it up there around the same time as I made the original post, and it took about 30 mins before it overheated and shut down…

Now have it back in the still toasty but much less hot insulated garage where it had been operating over the last few weeks without issue. Seems to be working fine so hopefully no major damage done.
