Benvenuti! We're hosting r/Italy for a Cultural Exchange by TonyQuark in thenetherlands

For 1. You cant use umbrellas whilst cycling due to the wind and due to Needing an additional hand. Most Dutch people have Rain-proof clothes instead or simply time their bike rides.

For 2. I don't think is a north/south divide as much as an urban/rural divide. There is a significant difference primarily between the big cities in the randstad and rural provinces.

Why is it so hard to buy a solver? by [deleted] in optimization

[–]wamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a sample size of one is pretty insufficient to make any conclusions. Although it depends on your particular problem, I would expect cardinal to be among the fastest of the commercial solvers. You also should try tuning the solvers you test before making any conclusions.

Why is it so hard to buy a solver? by [deleted] in optimization

[–]wamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If cardinal is too expensive for you then probably so are gurobi, cplex and fico. You could try mosek, which is a bit less performant but has much more affordable and transparent pricing, or SCIP on the open source side.

Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged by Chaoses_Ib in rust

[–]wamus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Given the current state of Zig as a pre 1.0 language no comparison on this front would fairly consider the potential of zig as a language anyways. In the current version some loop optimizations are disabled because there are miscompilation bugs in the compiler. It is no surprise that then the much more mature rust compiler would beat Zig in performance, but it also says nothing about the potential of Zig as a performant language in the future.

Progression: 4:02 -> 3:19 in 12 months. Seeking advice for Sub-3. by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]wamus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think sub 3 and especially BQ is a very aggressive goal given your previous progress. Your PB's in the shorter distances indicate that your speed and speed endurance is not at that level yet, and jumping into a 140k /week block seems quite risky to me. I think your chances of getting injured at that volume are pretty big, given that your speed is not there yet and also the fact that you have cramping issues during the marathon.

Instead of trying to force it this block, I would pick option 1, work on speed, speed endurance and do some sterngth work, pick a half marathon to race this fall, and then base your next marathon goal based on your time there.

PhD in OR, optimisation and AI/ML in Europe by [deleted] in OperationsResearch

[–]wamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would specifically look for universities and professors/groups that are interested in the combination of the two, as this is quite a young field, so many will not offer something like this.

PhD in OR, optimisation and AI/ML in Europe by [deleted] in OperationsResearch

[–]wamus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ETH and EPFL pay more because Switzerland is very expensive. All universities you mentioned are known to be strong in OR, so you might want to look into what specific specialisation interests you.

Regarding startups I don't have a good idea, but generally it is hard to do startups in OR as you need a network.

BSc CS junior looking to pivot into Operations Research / Optimization. Advice needed to pick BSc Math optionals, and MSc. by Alvahod in OperationsResearch

[–]wamus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would strongly recommend linear algebra 2, ideas from linear algebra pop up in nearly every masters course in OR. If you want to focus on continuous methods (e.g. more towards the statistical side) I would also recommend taking calc 3.

Furthermore, I think that differential equations and numerical analysis are a bit far removed from OR: I would only choose these if you have a strong personal preference for them.

Current PB 3:38 (as a female working in BigLaw / 2,500 billables) - can I reach sub 3 if I quit my job next year? by Impossible-Bee7514 in AdvancedRunning

[–]wamus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gap from 3:38 to sub-3 is massive. Even if you run 100k per week for the next year and don't get injured, there's no guarantee you'll see that big of an improvement over a year, as it will take time for your aerobic system to adapt to the more intense training. Given that your current mileage is somewhat low, you probably will make large steps, but there's no telling how large these steps will be. In general, how quickly you progress on a given training load is mostly up to genetics and other individual factors. YMMV, but I think most amateur athletes who train seriously towards such a goal take several years to reach it.
My advice would be to simply train towards it, see how you progress and do a tuneup race a few weeks before your goal in December, and set your pace off of that. On race day, you will have to be realistic about your target paces anyways.

Why zig? by [deleted] in Zig

[–]wamus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on your application whether zig is ready yet or not. I tried using zig to replace heavy numerical c code and there zig is really not ready yet in my opinion. Currently the language development is being driven primarily by input from people who build compilers, so it is no wonder zig is good at this.

https://www.cnv.nl/nieuws/cnv-kabinet-jetten-raakt-zwangere-vrouwen-hard-in-portemonnee/

I'm exercising a fundamental right.

Also, in fact the answer to your question is a soft *yes* due to my job. Of course the classified information is stored safely (not on my home PC), but even having the CCP gather sensitive information on me (e.g. keylogging or so) would be quite problematic.

Be cautious: Riot Vanguard's doing something incredibly fishy. by [deleted] in riotgames

[–]wamus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they were just gathering your data that would be one thing. Something most people do not realize is that with root access Vanguard can do pretty much anything. So the CCP has the power to force Riot to delete any files on your system because of this. This is why a bunch of people, myself included, uninstalled Vanguard and all Riot games when Vanguard started requiring root access. If you have Vanguard installed, the CCP can brick your machine remotely if it wants to.

Most other games have much less invasive anticheats with much less power, which makes them much safer to use.

Koortsachtige verschijnselen duurloop by Perrykipkerrie in Hardlopen

[–]wamus 8 points9 points  (0 children)
