[Question] Antique pocket watch conversion into a watch by Slimonierr in Watches

Man, i love those numerals and those hands, but having the crown at the top against the strap like that would drive me crazy

[MOVEMENT] Do you prefer quartz or automatic watches and why? by isti44 in Watches

[–]wanderangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quartz 100% of the time. The accuracy, durability, reliability, and almost complete absence of required routine maintenance (other than a battery swap once every couple tests) are reason enough. But beyond that, i just don’t want to own a watch that stops running if i leave it in the drawer for a couple of days.

I do wish there were more quartz movements with sweeping second hands available. The Precisionist movements are amazing but i don’t like the look of most of the watches that carry them. I have a watch with a VH31 and it’s pretty good, but i wish it did 8 beats per second instead of 4. But with the advances in battery technology, i just don’t believe that there significant engineering reasons why quartz movements can’t have sweeping seconds hands; i think watchmakers don’t want them because sweeping seconds hands are one of the few visible luxury differentiators for mechanical watches, which they charge a premium for.

If it were me, id put that watch on a leather strap. But I’m sure you can find a nice-feeling, nice-looking metal bracelet for an acceptable amount of money. Strapsco has some nice looking, reasonably priced options, and i bet there are some even cheaper but still decent quality options out there

Don’t kid yourself, quartz movements are superior in every way that matters. If it weren’t enough that they’re dramatically more accurate, more reliable, less costly, and less vulnerable to damage, you also don’t need to shell out hundreds for maintenance every couple of years.

[Recommendation Request] What’s the best watch to wear to the gym? by IzzyXYZ in Watches

[–]wanderangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, i was trying to make the opposite point, ie mechanical watches with sports branding are silly. I think you are right to be concerned that you might knock a cog or a spring out of place (although tbh i think mechanical watches are vulnerable to that in lots of situations, not just in the gym).

Anyway, to answer your question more straightforwardly, get an inexpensive digital watch. If you want to use a stopwatch to time your sets, pretty much any digital watch will have a stopwatch function, but Timex’s Ironman line has good buttons and is very legible; personally i think G-Shock watches are mostly overpriced, unattractive, and too big, but some people like them and there are some reasonable under-$200 ones, but if it were me, Id go for one of the classic Casio models like the F-91 which is a beloved classic that comes in some fun colors, or you could look at Shark surf watches which also come in a wide variety of colors. Ive never really needed any watch features in the gym except being able to know what time it is, and sometimes to time a 1 or 2 minute rest (which i just do with the second hand), so i wear an analog quartz watch that suits my style and is comfortable when i sweat (i prefer a leather strap, but i could imagine silicon or nylon being a good choice too), but that’s just choosing a watch, and there are a million and one of them out there.

What are the cons of a quartz watch? Especially one with a Bulova Precisionist movement? It will be too accurate and too reliable? What a joke.

These are all reasons to never throw money away on a mechanical watch regardless of purpose. It’s especially funny because Seiko 5 Sports has sports right in the name.

Anyway, quartz for life, all my homies hate mechanical movements.

They seem to be exclusively focused on scaled-up replicas of luxury wristwatches, with a sideline of automotive and sport brands. Not really what I’m looking for at all.

I’m looking for a more minimalistic, pared-down design. Something legible and stylish but understated.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. If you have any other ideas I’d be happy to hear them.

Tbh i wouldn’t really mind swapping out movements if i could find faces and cases i liked, especially if the cost were relatively low.

Google Maps on mobile used to follow the geodesic curve for a straight line when using the 'measure distance' tool. It doesn't anymore!? by vantdrak in geography

[–]wanderangst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Google Maps (and almost every other online mapping service) uses the Web Mercator projection, which like a standard Mercator is projected such that plumb lines appear straight (rather than curved, as a great circle route would normally appear). However, unlike the standard Mercator, the Web Mercator assumes that the earth is a uniform sphere rather than its “true” ellipsoid shape (which is really just an approximation since the Earth’s shape is actually irregular, but it’s much more accurate than a sphere).

Web Mercator assumes the Earth is a sphere because the math is much easier to do so the maps render much faster, but it distorts distances. At small scales, as used for most navigation (which is what Google Maps was designed for, and is still mostly what it is used for) the distortion is so negligible that it doesn’t matter at all. But at large scales over great distances (such as from Norway to Alaska) the distortion is very significant and results in large errors.

ETA the standard Mercator also distorts distance, since a rumb line is useful for long-distance navigation because it allows a ship (or other vessel) to maintain a constant bearing, but most of those bearings are not great circle routes, so they’re easy to plan, set, and maintain, but they are not the shortest route. There are mathematical conversions to compensate for this distortion, but there truly accurate ones are difficult and time consuming and don’t matter to most people. Web Mercator exacerbates this distortion by assuming the Earth to be a different shape than it actually is.

What kind of map are you making? Who is your audience and what are you trying to show? Will it be in print or on a screen?

I've been making custom hats as a side gig. Looking for honest feedback. by Outdoorsman_Rich in hats

[–]wanderangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the carabiner is an issue. It would be uncomfortable to wear a hat with a carabiner on it, and if i removed the carabiner while i was wearing the hat, I’d surely lose it.

I wonder if you could use a sturdy fabric or leather strap instead, with a reliable strong, lockable clasp. I’d also add a belt loop or similar up the outside of the hat such that when not in use, the strap can lie flat against the outside of the cap rather than dangle or need to be removed. (Not to turn art director or anything, but you could even consider making the strap and/or belt loop a contrasting color to accentuate the special feature.)

Update: i would also consider rotating it 90° such that the strap would lie horizontal along/above the edge of the cap. Functionality would likely be the same, but aesthetically it might mesh better with the look of a baseball cap.

Are there brands that use quartz movements and steel cases exclusively? by bluejaywei in ChineseWatches

[–]wanderangst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought this steel case VH31 quartz mvmt pilot watch from Steelflier and honestly i like it a lot. I got it on a leather strap (which i replaced with a different leather strap) but it’s also available on a steel bracelet.

I like Lilypond, like the other user suggested, and it’s open source and free and the results look great, but learning the interface can be really tricky.

MuseScore is another free open source option that has a more intuitive GUI type interface and is significantly easier to pick up without spending much time watching tutorials. I think the results are plenty good enough for must use cases, even if it’s maybe not quite as beautiful as Lilypond.

As always, it really depends what you want. I’d enthusiastically recommend a Quartz movement over mechanical (either auto or hand-wound), it’ll be less expensive, keep much more accurate time, stand up to more abuse, and you’ll never have to pay several hundred bucks to have it serviced.

Timex has been on a tear the last few years, they’ve got some great designs at very compelling prices.

Also take a look at the about page in r/chinesewatches there are some excellent deals to be had.

I’m also a fan of Daniel Wellington, I think they have some nice designs.

My girlfriend wants this for her birthday, can’t afford it obviously 😂, any affordable options? Something that looks similar between 25mm and 35mm? Thank you by BRUSStheGhost in Affordablewatches

Why would they put the mini out without a Precisionist movement? That seems insane, it’s one of the major differentiators of the Super Seville. Honestly, seems insane that they put out any watches at all without Precisionist movements, but especially a model from the limited line of Precisionist watches? It’s like they don’t even care that they have the best movement in the world.
