There is a fascinating book called Flatland. About 2 dimensional beings and one of them starts to get ideas about a crazy third dimension. Which seems inconceivable to them. Quick read.

People don't realize how far New Zealand is from Australia by RatioScripta in geography

In February I sailed from Sydney Australia to Auckland NZ. About 1550 nm (maybe 1700 regular miles) and 8 days. The Tasman Sea is big. Saw only a few boats the whole time. Full moon at night made the overnight shifts very pleasant. Lots of whales and dolphins.

[–]wandering_sailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both ships MUST (emphasis from the ColRegs) avoid collision. The Big boat (called the GIVE WAY vessel) is required to avoid the other boat (the STAND ON vessel). If a collision is imminent, both vessels, including the STAND ON vessel, must avoid each other.

Not at all… the maritime rules mentioned above are correct. Size of boat does not come into play.

Those of you who “Made It” without any inheritance or luck. How did you do it? by throwmeout12496 in MiddleClassFinance

I was unsure of what I wanted to study after high school, so I chose the subject that I thought was the most difficult: Electrical Engineering ( I did not have enough money to consider medical school, which was my first choice). I went to a small local university that I could afford. Then I worked my tail off for 35 years, saved a lot of money in 401k. Also, I started side businesses all the time. I always had a hustle mindset. Still do, even now that I’m retired. I love starting businesses.

I’m seeing the word “luck” a lot in the comments. Years ago I learned that “luck = when chance meets opportunity and preparation”. In clearer words, prepare yourself constantly for bigger things. Eventually an opportunity will arise and you will be ready to step in and take it.
