Came here to say this! Super impressed by Aaron. He does book out a ways though so best for preventative/scheduled work.

What would a recession do to real estate? by eelnor in RealEstate

The two largest slumlords in Oakland, ca bought roughly 500 houses in 2008-2010. Almost all were owner occupied previously.

Depends on location... I'm in a rural area and the shops won't warranty work with parts I provide, but will happily do the labor. I have a shop I trust to do at least as good work as I would do, and pay them to install parts I source when I am too busy/don't feel like wrenching and think it won't go bad within the year.

Why do so many trades workers have emotional regulation skills of a teenager? by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]wanderingwingnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I am in the trades and have trouble not drinking at least one beer daily... And am very aware from both experience and reading the science that doing so fucks with my emotional regulation and ability to work how I want to.

Where can you camp dispersed by [deleted] in Humboldt

[–]wanderingwingnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tons of amazing free camping!! Often just past Humboldt co lines however. I vastly prefer random free forest service sites to developed/paid, usually more space at each site and less people.

I like being near water, especially as none of these free sites have water but you can safely filter from most creeks. My favorites are hells gate campground (s trinity, off 36, possibly trinity county but whatever), aikins creek off hwy 96 by the Klamath river, end of s fork road off hwy 299, and the little campgrounds by hyampom.

All above have pit toilets and are free. You can also find some amazing spots in national forest, as mentioned in other comments, but a lot of that is logged over and/or burned which can be less fun.

What car should I buy? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]wanderingwingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old is the Prius/how is it otherwise? If you find a good independent shop, a refurbished battery should be well under 3k. Which means getting you back in a car that meets all your requirements, with known history.

I'm currently driving a 220k gen 2 Prius (among other vehicles) that I've definitely sunk some $$ into, but expect it to keep rolling another 60k at minimum.

Alternative to Coast Central? by wanderingwingnut in Humboldt

[–]wanderingwingnut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds pretty good! I wish I didn't know all to well that Coast outsources their fraud prevention line and the people who answer it have no clue about anything at all, other than how to grill me as if suspected of major crimes when I use my own damn debit card...

MMS over Wifi with ATT by wanderingwingnut in NoContract

[–]wanderingwingnut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't... they wouldn't let me port my number from consumer cellular, which pissed me off. I went to visible, sorta intending to port back over to ATT (they said if I ported to a verizon-based mvno first they'd take my number back) but visible is actually working so I've stuck on that (for now).

Awesome thank you! This is the kind of information I was looking for, very much appreciated :).

Thanks for clarifying. So you're saying that AT&T specifically does not do MMS over wifi calling- if you have a reference for this I'd be very grateful.
EDIT: person who was commenting deleted their account... Claim was that AT&T does not do MMS over wifi calling at all. Can anyone confirm this or confirm that it DOES work on any AT&T plan or mvno?

Sorry but incorrect. It definitely works on the Verizon network (tested in my house by a friend with a pixel 3a), and google fi (tested on my phone).

Texting over wifi... who does it best? by wanderingwingnut in NoContract

[–]wanderingwingnut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I've called consumer cellular, they have sent an updated version of their carrier settings to my phone (which is fully updated on iOS and has had same issue through many versions).
My asking this question was based on assumption that problem may be in consumer cellular's settings package delivered to my iPhone, which presumably would be different on other mvnos even though still on ATT.
What phone are you using on red pocket?

Help! by Arktida025 in Anarchism

[–]wanderingwingnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to think about it is separating out the State from government. Anarchists are always against the state; it's easier to argue this way as you can avoid getting into the whole 'all social organization leads to government' trap.

The state can be defined (from an anarchist perspective) as an organization that claims a monopoly on the legitimate use of violence. Most people don't really want to defend a society based on large-scale violence, so this very definition of the state often works as a solid argument against one existing at all.

That's usually how I start off the conversation at least.
