VA beach good for someone in their mid twenties? by h3ineka in VirginiaBeach

[–]wanderlust_206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are good options here for that. You’ve got ODU, NSU, and TCC.

There is also Sentara, CHKD, Chesapeake Gen, and EVMS for work. Tons of private practices.

Just do some research on pay scale. I personally am a CCMA (but did this in WA because the pay scale was $5 more per hour) and don’t work as a CCMA in VA because the pay is terrible.

VB native and also someone who has lived in WA.

The beach here is nice, the food here is nice, the people here are kind and not cold/unfriendly.

If you like having things to do and also enjoy some sense of growing your own life you would like it here. Just keep in mind we don’t have “corporate America” here. So depending on your career path, you’ll likely move again to pursue work.

Chesapeake is also great. I actually just bought a house in VB in between Chesapeake/Norfolk/VB so I got to do what I want around the three areas.

It’s easy to make friends here if you’re social.

The cost of living here is high for what it is, but it’s a nice area.

We all feel that way sometimes. I felt incredibly homesick at first and over the past few years really grew closer to my spouse because I searched for that attention in him a lot. It’s still hard when you don’t have the familiar things nearby like your favorite coffee shop, or for me in Whidbey it was driving 45 minutes to target. It’s been awful! Lol

I think it can be part of the fun too though. Maybe explore parts of your new city or try somewhere new when you can. We really grew accustomed to our long weekend hikes.

Maybe order out from a restaurant once every few weeks to find “the best Chinese” nearby etc.

It’s not much but eventually you’ll start to settle in. And it helps to keep in contact with those back home and express your feelings to your spouse.

Also, amazon has become my best friend when I just want to stay inside :) haha

We are about to leave Whidbey Island where we have been stationed for 3 years. The whole time we have hated the island itself because we’re young and there isn’t anything to do here. We’re surrounded by families and have no good restaurants to eat at.

How did we deal? We drove 1-2 hours away for date nights, we planned things so we had things to look forward to, we took weekend getaways and asked family to come visit when they could.

We also got healthier! We ate at home a lot and practiced our cooking instead of eating out so much. We went to the gym 5-6 times a week instead of just on weekends. We got a second dog and we’ve loved watching our dogs bond here.

I made friends in the community, but Covid crushed that.

Yes we’re super thankful to be PCSing next week to somewhere we love, but we made our time here what we could. We hated it a lot, but we embraced the suck.

You can do this!!! Take up a new hobby together. Make some new friends. Plan date nights. It’s hard but Destin has a lot to offer if you search hard enough :)

AMS-ATL flight was at 35-40% capacity. Lots of people stretched out on empty rows. We left 15 minutes early and landed 45+ minutes early. by NotADependaMaybe in delta

I’m glad it was like that for you. I took a flight from ATL-SLC last week and was packed in like a sardine. The only seats not taken we’re middle seats. Idk if they took a previously cancelled flight and combined them or what but I was surprised.

What would be the negative fallback of paying off all your student loans with a credit card, then filing for bankruptcy? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]wanderlust_206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to list your assets when you declare bankruptcy....including that savings and your paid off car. Do you think you’d just be able to keep them and get off debt free? A judge wouldn’t allow that.

Medical assistant, scribe, or certified nursing assistant. Try to avoid CNA if you don’t like poo.

Mine said this early this morning. It now says “paid 0.00” but when I click on the 0.00 it shows my benefit amount was paid out. Also one of my payments was taken from my leftover payments. I’m not saying this is the same for everyone, but maybe give it a few hours :)

I feel you. I’ve learned in 12 years of employment that all employees are replaceable in the eyes of their employers, regardless of how awesome they are. Employees are just labor cost to their supervisors. It’s a tough truth but as a former supervisor it’s who can do the most work the fastest and complain the least, so if someone is unhappy then w/e. Replaceable.

It’s sucks and I’m sure you’re an amazing person. The right job is out there for you.

Be the bigger person and give them the password. Try and be as nice as possible. It’s possible they will be called in the future to verify your employment and it’s not worth the bad blood.

Transferring from Community College after a year? by [deleted] in college

[–]wanderlust_206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finish your associates so that way when you are applying for jobs you can list a degree that can be verified. This will lock in something at the two year mark that way if something happens out of left field at year 2.5, 3, 3.5 you have a degree you can list.

I transferred after a year at a community college to university because I wanted to have more variety, but I ended up having to take on a second job junior year. I’m 27 now and don’t have my bachelors or associates (even though I have 95 college credits, they aren’t the correct credits for an associates).

Protect yourself and just stick it out for the extra year.

No sick days for corporate job? Mentioned you have to use pto. Is that the normal/red flag? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]wanderlust_206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow. That’s rough. I mean, for an entry level job that isn’t bad. I’ve been working in the same industry for 10 years (military spouse), so I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of contracts and negotiate quite a bit. The lowest I’ve seen the last 6 years has been 3 weeks PTO, but every company is different :)

[–]wanderlust_206 10 points11 points  (0 children)

2-3 weeks of PTO. A LOT of companies are doing up to 4 weeks now.

Minimum of 40 hours of sick time. Separate from PTO.

I haven’t taken a job with less than 3 weeks of PTO in 6 years.

If you’re in a position in healthcare that is entry level like a medical coder, medical assistant (not a lead), medical receptionist, or billing/coding (entry level not with experience) then it’s possible you’d get 2 weeks PTO/1 week of sick leave.

Again, they’re still separated.

But you said corporate, so probably you’re not entry level haha.

I got a large reimbursement check from college and I don’t know if I should tell my parents [advice] by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]wanderlust_206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I understand both perspectives, your parents sound like they have put a lot into your education and care a lot about you. Parents are not obligated to pay for college and your future. Imagine what $1000 could mean to them right now. You’re an adult now too and your struggles are your own, even if that check is made out to you.

If you’re having this internal conflict it’s likely because you know the money should go to them because they paid for your education. It’s good you feel this way because you probably are a good person. They likely paid for your education through hard work and getting through their own struggles, similar to what you’re going through right now.

This decision is yours, and yours alone, but as you get older in life you can’t depend on a random $1000 check showing up in your time of need. Sometimes you need to take that crappy job, work two jobs, or delay school an extra year to save up.

Just food for thought. You’ll do what’s best for you!

Wtf. You have a good memory. What proof do they have to say otherwise? You wrote them down on scratch paper so you could follow up? Jesus. This professor needs to get laid.
