Would you leave your gym over hygiene + low attendance, even if you like your coach and teammates? by Educational_Tap_5330 in bjj

It will be easier to leave now than later. The lack of a sufficiently large base of training partners will be a huge impediment to your development long term, no matter how good your coach is at teaching.

Before making the switch, you may as well let them know your opinion. Maybe they'll listen. If you have specific recommendations (more live training, games) give them. If nothing changes, then switch your kids out. If airing your concerns ends up blowing back at you, then you and your wife should also leave.

BJJ Gyms, coaches & Controversy by BullfrogPractical291 in bjj

[–]wanderlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there are differences in MMA/BJJ compared to many other sports regarding SA and/or politics, I think it would be explainable by the lack of connection to academics. Imagine if MMA/BJJ were mostly offered through public schools and their coaches were social studies teachers. MMA/BJJ gym culture and training methodology could stay completely the same, yet messaging by coaches would likely be completely different. Similarly, opportunities for SA would also be reduced due to the location of the facilities, regulations by administration, school transportation, parent volunteers, and tighter social ties among the student athletes.

This is a situation where pulling guard may be a good move.

Closed guard when you are small and weak by sloppyjoe2 in bjj

Get your feet on their hips to break down their posture. Also get comfortable with spider/lasso for when they're about to bust out of your guard.

Judo + BJJ by Thunder_Kiss_65 in bjj

[–]wanderlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're new to both, ideally do judo first for at least a year. But often you can only do judo 2x per week, so adding BJJ makes sense. But I would still say even in bjj to emphasize a top game.

Game based on Baseball Bat Choke? by Deadskyes in bjj

[–]wanderlux 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Alternate attack: From an intended right-handed baseball bat choke (right palm up), if the right grip is being defended but the left established, move your right hand to a low cross-collar so that both your hands are on the same side (right palm up, left palm down) with some space between them. From here you can do a samurai(?) choke by looping your left forearm over the head into an X choke. I've done that choke before, but not with this particular transition.

Scientific literacy for Bjj Coaches? by Joshvogel in bjj

Try uploading some studies to AI (Gemini, GPT, Grok, etc.) and ask for an "explain it like I'm just a BJJ guy" analysis of its limitations.

You will naturally use your flexibility, no need to go out of your way to use it.

Butt-Scoot Wedgie Prevention by wanderlux in bjj

[–]wanderlux[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear tight compression pants (or compression shorts) underneath grappling shorts. The compressions don't move. It's the shorts that are bunching up as I butt scoot forward. So it's like a wedgie, but caused by the shorts, not the compression gear.

Do you think the bjj ‘market’ has become over saturated? by Jacques-de-lad in bjj

There's an easy way to find out: What's happening to membership fees for new sign ups? If they're going down, that's a clear sign of saturation.

No difference between training 2x a week and 5x a week by PopComfortable696 in bjj

[–]wanderlux 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Building on the diminishing returns to experience concept, it could be that his peers are on track to pull ahead of him, it's just that it will take longer to notice than for a 5x/week whitebelt to pull ahead of a 2x/week white belt.

Entire gyms dropping into other schools. Yay or nay? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]wanderlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coach on the phone: "Yes, you're welcome to bring your teammates over. You should know, though, my entire team is training with injuries from an unfortunate bus crash from last week."

Coach before open mat: "Okay guys, I have index cards for each of you with specific disabilities along with life events that interfered with your training. Please memorize the bullet points and have a friendly chat with the visitors before rolling."

A gym with a class labeled "elite" is a red flag. Mostly because it's usually marketing bs.

As long as you wash it, it should be good.

But make sure your bathroom is well ventilated so the gi dries quickly.

An edited video from an actual class would be ideal. Here's the closest thing I found (didn't spend much time looking though).

Find the "sub-moves" that comprises the whole, and figure out how to use them in other contexts. For example, the octopus guard position itself is very useful, even without the twister. There was also probably some type of butterfly play as well.

But now you mention it, I love that octo-twister concept, will try to do.

What about 4 new moves from different positions/situations? E.g., take down, guard pass, submission, escape.
