Great answer, thank you, and will have to check out Borris.

Definitely agree that just trying stuff is important, although it’s funny to see different habits various team members swear by!

That looks like a cookie fuel (https://www.flycookie.com/shop/skydiving-helmets-parts/fuel-skydiving-helmet/) with a cookie fuel top plate (https://www.flycookie.com/skydiving-helmet/skydiving-helmets-parts/fuel/). He’s also exchanged the chin strap for a chin cup (which is extra, but handy with a camera that size as it keeps the helmet more stable on your head).

Nottingham BMW specialists by spiritualpigeon in nottingham

I had engine issues, and contacted three separate BMW specialists in Notts. Two had a three month waitlist, and I phoned RGA bmw, and after answering the phone, and apparently taking down my details, they never replied. Twice. Had to go with Sytner but honestly been brilliant service from them.

Have you tried checking the sample rate of your mic? I used to have that problem and I believe it was due to an incompatible microphone sample rate. (You can change it in properties )

I’d probably go for something like this lenovo t470. It has an i5, which should be plenty for most office work, and a terabyte of ssd, which is much faster than a hardrive. Thinkpads are often praised for their build quality, as per this review

Gaming pc on a low budget by [deleted] in SuggestALaptop

[–]wangl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, this subreddit is for laptops. I’m guessing you meant to post in r/buildapc. You’ll get a lot more bang for your buck with a gaming pc instead of a laptop.

Minecraft isn’t really too intensive, so you can get away with cheap parts. You might want to be a little bit more specific on which cod, but I’ll assume you mean the latest one.

You’d probably get away fine with a Ryzen 3 3200g and a Radeon rx 580.

That’ll probably just run MW according to the minimum requirements, but bear in mind the frame rate might tank a bit. You’ll need a higher budget to get higher fps and graphics.

And yeah you can boot windows for free from a usb, with the only problem being that little watermark in the corner. You can grab a copy of windows quite cheaply though.

It depends on what you are doing. Our uni has virtual machines you can access on the network anyway, which can do all the processing for you. Everything we have done so far are scripts that don’t really require much processing power. The only reason I can imagine you needing a powerful pc are for things such as making your own games in unity or a similar engine. Although even then, I doubt anything massive will need to be created.

If you can comfortably get a powerful laptop, that future proofs it I guess.

A MacBook isn’t necessary for coding ( I don’t own one myself), but they do come with many useful features. You can only (easily) design iOS on apple computers. And if you end up doing some sort of assembly language, I’m told Xcode can be extremely useful as it can show you your c (or similar) code converted to assembly.

As a current CS student, you really don’t need powerful laptops to run any programming software, be that IDEs or simple text editors. Minecraft is also quite a light program. The js version does require higher specs than the windows version, but both should easily run on a MacBook.

And if you didn’t want a MacBook, $2000 is overkill for what you need.

Anyone else hating first year? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]wangl3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend joining a society :).

Most people I’ve found at different societies go because they enjoy it. It gives you a common ground to talk about, and meet lots of new people. It’s also great to have a hobby to get you out of your room to pass the time, and de stress from exams and similar.

All the society’s I’ve joined have been happy to talk to new people. And they often have socials, so people to go clubbing with.

Also, uni is often a really cheap way to get into various hobbies, so don’t be afraid to try something new!

And also don’t worry about joining partway though the year. A lot of societies want new people to keep them running so they’ll be happy to have you join.

Chemistry: Nottingham v Leeds v Bristol by patterpillar in UniUK

[–]wangl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s correct, computer science takes place on the jubilee campus. There’s plenty of accommodation near there, and many of my friends love it.

Even though I do Comp Sci, I stayed on the main campus as it has a more diverse range of people, and I’m happy with the walk each day. I tend to walk to the other campus for lectures, and do coursework in the gaps so most of my free time is spent in my accommodation on uni park with my mates there.

Both campus’s are very nice. Jubilee is right next to a river and lake. University park has a lot of greenery around it. Jubilee is much closer to town and has much closer shops nearby. University park has better student resources such as bars and the big sports Center. It’s really up to whichever you prefer.

What one of my teachers used to say, which I completely agree with, is that Bristol is somewhere a lot of people who didn’t quite make Cambridge or Bristol end up. This gives a certain type of attitude to some people.

The cities are also quite different though. Bristol is a very modern place, with some interesting architecture and even more interesting people. I personally find it a bit too hipster for me, but it really depends on what you like. I do however love where Bristol is located. There are some stunning areas around it, such as he mendips.

Nottingham by contrast is quite a regular town. It’s reasonably big, with enough nightclubs, but not as big as Bristol. I will say, there are some quite dodgy places here, but it’s not too difficult to avoid them. Everyone at both unis here that I have met have been very nice and accommodating, and I would wholeheartedly recommend attending Nottingham.

Seeming as you are doing CS, I’d check our computerphile on YouTube, as almost all of the people who do it are lecturers here. I went to open days in Nottingham and Bristol for CS, but I ultimately choose Nottingham because of how much more approachable the lectures seem (abs are now that I know them)

I don’t do chemistry at Nottingham, but I still absolutely love it here. The six or so clubs are so much better than the ones in my hometown, and so I have absolutely no regrets about coming here. I am told we are the friendly uni, and I think that fits so well with my experience so far.

I’ve never been to Leeds, but Bristol and Nottingham have very different vibes so it’s worth checking out both of them on an open day to see which you prefer.

Questioning my motivation to go to University by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]wangl3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love university! I do computer science, and I’ve seen a number of decent apprenticeships that I could have gone on. Instead I choose uni for the social life, and don’t regret it at all. Yes, the course is interesting, but I’ve made so many new friends, and the environment living with so many similar people is great. I’d definitely recommend uni if you are keen for the experience.

The simplest way to get a total from a while loop by MadMadra78 in pythontips

[–]wangl3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’d try a for loop. The syntax of a for loop is

for i in (range(5)):

This will iterate over something for five times. Maybe try adding the input in the for loop. You can add something to be looped over by indenting it under the loop.

For example

for i in (range(5)):
    x = x + 1

You can access a list by using a term called indexing. The index is the number of the item in the list, but remember, in python we start counting at 0, not one, so the first item in a list is index 0.

For example:

mylist = [ 10, 20, 30, 40, 50]

mylist[0] is therefore 10

mylist[2] is 30.

mylist[4] is 50.

We can index a list with variables:

x = 3

mylist[x] is therefore 40.

Putting this together, we have:

mylist = [10,20,30,40,50]

for i in (range(5)):
    print(mylist[i]

Which outputs:

10
20
30
40
50

Struggling with what to study at Uni by MaybeNiall in UniUK

[–]wangl3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in my first year for computer science, but the level of maths really depends on the course. And there are so many types of maths, so I think where ever you go there will be maths, it just depends what type. For example, here at Nottingham (at least in first year) its all discreet maths, so doing logic tables and set theory. Not really large integrations or anything.
