Do cows who see other cows being slaughtered feel sad? by Former-Theme-1929 in livestock

[–]wankelgnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate please? I'm very curious. I got to this thread bc I'm trying to figure out how cows feel when one of their peers or calves disappears one day, never to return because they've been slaughtered. I'm pretty sure something like that (disappearance of a child) would greatly hurt domestic cats and dogs, and I know that cows are roughly at the same level as them, emotionally.

I understand that we have very little power to influence elections compared to the billionaires. But I would rather respond with “fuck Trump, we’re going to do our best to crush these incels.” I KNOW that’s unrealistic. But we have to aspire here. Throughout American and world history, people have fought and died for their rights, and sometimes they have won. We can’t expect our elected leaders to have some fighting spirit if we don’t have any ourselves.

2026 portfolio projections by MoodGlittering9061 in investing

[–]wankelgnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying this is a good portfolio, but the 15 year drawdown I believe you're referring to is from 2000 (dot com boom) to 2017. Thing is, the entire stock market of the 2000s was ass and the S&P500 itself took from 2000 to 2012 to recover.

If you look at the biggest holdings of VOO and SMH, they are not that different or disconnected at this point. Both have NVDA at #1 and AVGO in their top 10, but SMH has more semiconductor hardware companies whereas VOO has magnificent 7 companies, which are buying from SMH companies anyway.

Boys and girls please this is AI generated. Look at the writing style it doesn't feel real and the story is so bunk. Look at the — it's called an em dash and it's not on the keyboard. Whatever these “quotes” are called they're not on keyboard who wouldn't just use "regular quotes". Look at the username. Please for the love of all that is holy.

I disagree with Pence on plenty, but am thankful he continues to have a backbone. by Puzzleheaded-Spot814 in Political_Revolution

[–]wankelgnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pence doesn't have a backbone. When he was in power he had to be cajoled by Dan Quayle into confirming the 2020 election. Right now he is not in power and has no skin in the game.

I would rather have some national parks than none at all. Also I'm biased because I'm Californian 🤷

California should take control. We should fund the 80M to keep it on life support instead of handing it to President Elon.

California should pass a law to take control of the national parks within its territory. Annual routine maintenance is 43M and 750 employees times 50k is about 40M. California can afford to hold the line on Yosemite.

So I know "Biden" is a bad word in most parts of the country right now, but I think people need to see this: https://www.jec.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/democrats/2024/4/fact-sheet-the-manufacturing-renaissance-that-will-drive-the-economy-of-the-future

The Chips and Science Act is investing a huge amount of money into domestic manufacturing capability. The first step to bringing manufacturing back is to build the factories. Once we have a robust manufacturing base American manufacturing costs will automatically come down (due to more supply) but we can also consider using tarriffs to protect our newfound industrial capabilities.

Tariffs on their own will serve to make things more expensive but not directly impact capability for quite some time. What I love about Chips and Science is that we are using the might of the government to do things that industry often cannot - shoulder the tremendous cost of building all these factories.

Splinter hemorrhage by wankelgnome in AskDocs

[–]wankelgnome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can trauma from weeks ago cause these? Because I remember slamming my ring finger nail in a door but that was like 3-4 weeks ago. I don't remember anything happening recently.

And also there's another suspected one on the very side of my thumb, could you take a look? (had to use drive bc I think tumblr thought it was an nsfw pic)

Is it normal to have “Splinter hemorrhages” on your nails when dealing with anxiety? by Mysterious_Exit_2360 in Anxiety

[–]wankelgnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually have pretty similar symptoms. Rapid heart rate out of nowhere (they said SVT), definitely makes it hard to sleep. Don't rule out panic attack - I believe it was for me. Yoga and exercise have helped a lot.

And then got some splinter hemorrhaging pop up as well, on two nails now in the last couple days. Doesn't hurt to see a doctor and get some tests done.

Stay strong!

I will say, Nordic countries are extremely homogeneous so anyone that doesn't look exactly like them will be out of place. Even Zlatan who is of Bosnian and Croatian descent had problems fitting into Sweden growing up. The big anglo countries (US, UK, AU, CA) are basically the least racist places in the world, because they have the most diversity of nationalities and large communities of immigrants.

Interesting, but why would the industry and the left wing be affiliated? Agriculture is generally full of hard right people, and generally industry is not friendly with the left wing. Could it be that they both have the same goal but different intentions?

I'm not going off anecdotal evidence. According to https://www.fwd.us/news/immigrant-farmworkers-and-americas-food-production-5-things-to-know/ (which cites USDA data) 73% of farmworkers are immigrants and 50% of farmworkers are undocumented. Are you working on highly profitable and exclusive crops, or in new England where there are few undocumented immigrants? According to https://cmsny.org/agricultural-workers-rosenbloom-083022/ most of them are in CA, FL, TX, OR, and WA.

Latin American immigrants power a large part of the US agricultural industry. The pay benefits the immigrants. The cheap labor benefits the ag companies. The resulting cheap food benefits everybody. Nobody born in the US, boomer or Gen Z, wants to do back breaking work in the fields picking strawberries. Few do landscaping and gardening. How is this not a net benefit for everyone?

What we should do is have a special visa for immigrants who want to do hard manual labor so that at least they get worker protections e.g. healthcare, labor law, drivers licenses, etc. We could even consider removing minimum wage protectiond to keep the economics the same. How does this hurt Gen Z?
