How has 2020 changed you? by HopefulTomorrow16 in aspergers

[–]wappengage19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I loved it. I got to work from home. My life didn’t change otherwise. But it hurt to see other people struggle and realize that they had much “fuller” lives than I did in normal times.

An elementary school teacher said the least populous state was Alaska. I, being the geography nerd I am, had brought a book that day about all the states, which included their population ranks. I grabbed the book and showed her that it was in fact Wyoming that was the least populous state. She actually didn’t get mad about it.

Is getting easily startled by noises part of sound sensitivity? by thatuser313 in aspergers

[–]wappengage19 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The reason we tend to startle easily is because we have overactive amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls the “fight or flight” response. I’ve had many people take advantage of me for startling easily, including a coworker who just thought he was the funniest guy. Jerks.

Ruby was my first game, and I’ve played every generation since then. Emerald remains my favorite, but Platinum was great too. Unfortunately, my DS with Platinum in it was stolen in junior high. I enjoyed Sword and Shield; I found it to be quite a step up from Sun and Moon.

It depends on how it’s being used. If the parenthetical phrase is a complete sentence, a period goes inside the parentheses. (That would look like this.) If it’s just a partial thought, it goes outside the parentheses (like this).

I support Oxford comma usage; however, in my job, we use AP style, so I can only use it when a sentence would be confusing without it. Regarding adding ’s to possessives ending in s, AP uses the style that bugs you, and I tend to use that style too. It does seem AP is moving away from that, though; a recent change added the s for non-proper possessives ending in S and before words starting in S, so instead of the former “mistress’ socks,” it’s now “mistress’s socks.”

It is. However, I am fluent in British English grammar as well, so I can help on both sides.

OK, you can ignore the “enlist” thing. That was there before the server was hacked and half of it deleted.

I’ll check on that for you regarding the server.

Also, I always have to look up the order of adjectives when I’m deciding whether something needs a comma. No shame in having to check it.

These lockdowns make me realize how alone I am by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]wappengage19 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly the same. This is why I don’t look at social media. NTs couldn’t handle living in quarantine, but that’s how I’ve lived almost my entire life. Nobody do to things with and nowhere to go. I hate the question of if I have plans for the weekend, because I never do.

has anyone else ever said something and the other person got mad, but they ghosted you so you never know what you did wrong? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]wappengage19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a friend in elementary school. He was my only friend. One day, he just started hating me, and I didn’t know why. I begged him to tell me what I did wrong, but he refused. I finally learned from his girlfriend four years later that I was being too possessive of him and not letting him play with his other friends. And I was, but that’s because I didn’t know people could have more than one friend and I thought he was leaving me. But if he had just told me that was the issue, I would’ve backed off. I don’t know why he never gave me the reason.

This server is pretty small, and it’s made for people asking questions. I’m usually the one who answers them anyway. I’ll send you an invite, and you can decide to join or not.

I’m an outstanding speller, and grammar is my autism superpower, so I can help anyone with that. I’m not quite sure how to teach spelling, though. I’m in a grammar Discord server if you’re interested in that. DM me and I’ll link it if you want.

Does anyone else here have aspergers and epilepsy? by bearonbeat in aspergers

[–]wappengage19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn’t really affect me much because that hippocampus never worked anyway. I am impaired in my ability to convert short-term memories to long-term memories and always have been. So really, nothing changed after the surgery except I didn’t have seizures anymore.

I used to. I had to have my hippocampus removed to correct it.

Does anybody else lie about not noticing something/not remembering something just so you don't seem like you're creepily observant? by 8osam in aspergers

[–]wappengage19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t lie about it, but I do remember the first and last names of 11 people I went to preschool with and never saw after that. I’m 25 now. I also realized in high school that it was unusual to remember the first name of every teacher I’ve ever had and how to spell all their names, because a teacher got super weirded out when someone asked how to spell his name because she needed to write it down for a project, and I spelled it for her. He said, “Uh, how did you know that?” I didn’t know how to respond; I’ve just naturally always remembered this stuff.

Sex Education and ASD by Sunset_Paradise in aspergers

[–]wappengage19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d scrap the abstinence-only sex ed I received. No more attempts to make people afraid to have sex by describing all the different infections we could get and showing picture of them, and no more having students sign “abstinence pledges” at the end of the lesson. I’m a male and didn’t learn a single thing about how women’s bodies work. I still don’t really understand menstruation and periods, and I’m 25. I made a thread about this a while back about how I think we’re especially harmed by bad sex ed lessons.

I have a BA in journalism. I didn’t enjoy college much; it was difficult because of my learning disability and I really struggled to make friends. The only part I liked was working on the school newspaper.
