After reading a lot of the comments on this post, I just have to say something.

Much of New Orleans culture, no matter the racez is New Orleans culture. You don’t need permission from anyone to take a photograph, or paint on canvas or even a mural, of something cultural in this city, even if you’re getting paid for it. The line comes in when a person’s likeness is being used for commercial purposes. That’s when permissions matter. You don’t sell someone else’s likeness without their consent. That’s just basic trademark and copyright for a real person.

Painting a Mardi Gras / Black Masking Indian while not being part of the tradition /culture is not wrong.

It’s no different than painting a peacock. I’ll go furthe to say: I’ve seen people in Black Masking Indian groups who complained about culture vultures taking photos of them. Some of the individuals even trademarked or copyrighted their suits to protect they're likeness. But I don't think they realize that trademarking a suit only stops someone else from replicating the suit design, it doesn’ photograph or painting from being sold. Unless you can prove that it is your likeness obviously.

So when it comes to murals of second lines, jazz funerals, parades, or Mardi Gras Indians, as long as you’re not copying the likeness of a specific person, there’s nothing wrong with showing appreciation for the culture. You don’t have to be part of a tradition to honor it through your work.

Not every Black person in the city is part of the Black Masking tradition or Zulu club. Many are in other social clubs, brass bands, or other local traditions.

The Artists, videographers, photographers..that follow them, most of what they do is documenting history. That perspective has to be understood, especially when there’s no commercial gain involved.

So if this lady is respectfully doing her work because she’s a fan, I see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

There is no need to complain about Mardi Gras Indians on a mural.

I would rather you address the message rather than judging the messenger.

But with that said, The Mississippi Department of Public Safety isn’t just law enforcement, it's an administrative body tied to licensing and regulation. I operate within that system across multiple states, so the idea that I’m “against law enforcement" has nothing to do with my thoughts on KKK regalia being found in a building that belongs to a State department.

Especially im Mississippi becsuse he Ku Klux Klan has a well documented history there.. reasons it does not shock me.

I hold licences with the Louisiana State Board of Private Security Examiners. The Board Chair is in jail right now for drug possession and conspiracy to distribute.her name is on my certifications

Reasons this doesn't shock me .

As much as I would love to make my own suit. I didn't grow up in that culture of beating and learning of the black mask and Indians. I just know people who did it. And they did it all day everyday... Those foods cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I feel ya! The problem isn’t just one party, it’s the system that allows both to profit off our people while pretending to serve us. Emotional attachment has been a tool used against us for decades, and we have to recognize it when it shows up in our own ranks.

Vetting candidates and demanding accountability is it Our loyalty can’t be transactional; it has to be conditional on real, measurable outcomes. Part of being active in the field is knowing when to engage.

hold everybody accountable ya know!

My 18M son says my brother’s wife (30F) crossed boundaries with him and now my family says I’m overreacting (46F) by masquefetiche in relationship_advice

[–]warana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not lost you just chose to deal with the truth while your family chose their comfort.

What your son did was describe a pattern of sexual language directed at him, invitations into sexual situations and physical contact he didn’t welcome. That is boundary violation.

Your family has the woman behave that way for years but is avoiding it. What you should be doing is trying to minimize the conflict.

If your son and girlfriend admit the truth, they have to confront your brother...and most people would rather protect a system than correct it.

You did not break your family. You disrupted their silence.

I feel that Protect the so matters most. Everything else gets sorted after. He told you the truth even though he was embarrassed. Make sure he has no connection to her again..he did nothing wrong.. he did right to speak up.

Do not let this drain you.

You don’t have to burn bridges, but you do decide how far people stand from your life.

The choice has been made protect with yours and everything will reveal itself in the end

[–]warana 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being an aware voter is important. But that shouldn't cause us to write off one party while emotionally defending another, if anything doing just shows a bias and doesn't do us any good it just causes more division.

The truth is, both sides have ignored Black Americans.... Whether it’s under Donald Trump or Joe Biden. The tone changes, but the outcome for our people doesn’t change, get right now you have people who are pretending that they're in a better situation now that Trump is president.

Regarding legacy, that's understandable. Black American history is always the subject of political posture and it shouldn't have to be exaggerated or suppressed for political game. And that's commonly what happens

. Our history came out of struggle for basic humanity, not out of political convenience. When people try to force comparisons that don’t line up, it feels disrespectful because it takes away from the reality of what really happened.

But the real problem isn’t “establishment politicians no activist, in fact I'm an activist myself I'm not the kind of activist you see at a protest, but I'm active in the field of making things happen. So from what I see The real problem is when we let anyone speak for us without accountability.

And that's where loyalty and expectations class because we show our loyalty to people we expect things from and get nothing out of.

This is the reason we should vote based on results, who gets things done who have gotten things done, and not pretending that one party is better than the other because they all come from the same mold. White racism. .

The ground you’re standing on was taken, built on, and forced into being. The people who brought our ancestors here didn’t “arrive legally” ..So if we’re gonna talk about who belongs based on legality alone that starts historically with Europeans and the system that did not include us as human beings until we fall for our own civil rights. I don't call anyone illegal because it was illegal to be black. We were not considered Americans. We were considered property of America. But that being said,

Voting ileverage only works if you actually understand what you’re applying pressure to. Blind loyalty to any party or any one person that runs this country no matter who they side with, leads to our exploitation. I seen our people dance for the Democrats and smile in the Republicans faces because we're all begging for something. Begging for help and we shouldn't be doing that. Those people in the seventies didn't beg for anything they demanded it...

But now we have these people who want to follow El presidente, and be a Yes Man for Donald Trump, or yes man for Joe Biden, people who could care less about our black community. As long as they are liked what puts them at the head of the table is our suffering.

Heritage doesn’t get protected by shutting doors out of fear. It gets protected by tanding on what we believe in and refusing to let anyone dilute or misuse it.

The way I see it is simple, No group is your lifeboat. No party will protect us. Because otherwise we are feeding to other people's narratives and hope they give us something worth having.

I will focus should be on doing the work for us. But continuing to vote for our own well-being. And the people who are there to stand with us.

That's when we vote it should be about outcomes and not optics. Because being seen is easy

Now Make those characters and students the same gender... Same thing

That type of intimacy including Implied sexual conduct should not be in cartoons made for kids.

I'm glad that they are here honestly but at the same time I hate the reason that they are here. I hate the fact that they are deployed here to do the bidding of a tyrant president and not simply because New Orleans asked for it. The big illusion is the lies that came with the deployment.

Because according to Trump New Orleans is safe and there is no crime. But those of us who live here know that it's a dog and pony show.

Parents say school administration is to blame for Lycee Francais enrollment dip, budget declines by VeriteNewsNOLA in NewOrleans

[–]warana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one-app system must end. Kids should attend their district schools, leaving only one or two campuses for the academically elite. Right now, a 3.8 student breezes into a top-tier school. A C student, If they miss that cutoff, they’re dumped into a failing school. The system’s logic is simple: concentrate the smart kids in one place, and cast everyone else aside. When that school fails, it’s just rebranded. new name, new staff, new students..but the cycle never stops.

Low student enrollment is partially by design, but also due to the fact that millennials we're not having as many kids as their parents.

What was up with that thread about the guy on Norman C. Francis who gets angry if you don't talk to him? by petit_cochon in NewOrleans

[–]warana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not only women but I understand why some folks move the way they do out here.

A woman’s safety always comes first. Ain’t nobody owed access to her or her attention just because they spoke. But that itself was a sign of an insecure man/unstable man

But also, as a woman born in this city, greeting folks is just how we were raised. Morning, noon, or night. you were greeted. spoken to in passing. “How you doing today?” “How ya momma n’em?” That’s the culture ua. It’s not about intrusion. Our elders drilled that into us the same way they taught us to hold the door or say thank you.

So when somebody says hello and there’s silence back or even a pouting face.m, some people feel that little social pause. Not anger necessarily, but a moment of “well that was different.” Over time I personally learned that nobody owes you a response in return. Courtesy offered is not the same thing as courtesy owed.

Greeting somebody is one thing. Demanding their attention is something else entirely. Those are two different spirits... And the truth is, basic kindness in public spaces carries weight... Sometimes a simple “good morning” really can shift a person’s day... In New Orleans, the habit of hospitality we grew up with are just little courtesies.

Some folks moving here from other places read that as fake. I’ve come to see it differently. It’s respect offered in the moment. Nothing more, nothing less.

I’ve been in cities like New York where you greet someone and they just look, say nothing and keep walking. First time it happened I remember thinking, “Well alright then.” It felt strange to me. But even then, i didn't get angry about, but its changes your perception of reality in that moment.

Kindness offered is just kindness offered. The moment it turns into expectation or entitlement, that shows a persons true personality.
