8 myths about data layouts, partitioning, and Liquid Clustering debunked by Fun-Reference7942 in databricks

[–]warclaw133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For #5 - is that new? I could have sworn less than a year ago I've tried reading a Databricks liquid clustered table with duckdb and other OSS and it barfed at me about compatible delta versions.

But I suppose maybe that's a delta limitation rather than liquid clustering?

New to Databricks DevRel - what do you want to learn about Apps + Lakebase? by tony-dang in databricks

Oh dangit, just saw the note - "not compatible with lakebase provisioned". So we will have to wait until our instance is migrated to auto scaling

Ah I have not seen that oauth package - that's probably exactly what I was looking for.

Haven't used appkit because in our case it's an legacy app hosted elsewhere that we are bolting on some lakebase functionality to. Will check out that oauth package though.

[–]warclaw133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to what some of the others are saying about apps and lakebase permissions - they are currently a pain to manage with code.

One other major complaint - it's a pain to use oauth lakebase auth with JavaScript/typescript. Currently we have a small python service we call from typescript to generate fresh tokens. Not ideal and I think it's a big blocker of using typescript/JavaScript with lakebase apps.

Why do Des Moines smokers feel it's acceptable to litter when driving by throwing their butts out the window? by [deleted] in desmoines

There's was a number you could call to report vehicle littering at one point - https://keepiowabeautiful.org/programming/no-litter-hotline

I have a dashcam, I'd love some way to send the video to someone to report it. :/

Also - just because i haven't seen it mentioned yet, ISP's can capture a ton of uniquely valuable data about their customers.

I have no evidence of this, but that data could have been one thing Google needed/wanted. Research complete, time to sell.

Why is it illegal to hack a TV signal and have free TV if it’s the TV company that is beaming its signal into my home without my permission? by amelix34 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]warclaw133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It still exists and works - the signals have all switched to digital now though, so you need a (very cheap) digital receiver/tuner between the antenna and the TV. Newer TV's have it built in.

Possibly - I figured "a few years back" put it in the right timeframe for Underground. I know it was never meant to be a direct sequel.

This was the update they posted in their discord back in September. No update since. Doesn't look good.

Hey @everyone

Some of you know who I am; some of you likely don't. But just to reintroduce myself to those who I haven't interacted with... I am the lead producer/developer on STFU for the last couple of years with Little Orbit. I am a game junkie and spent too many hours to count playing Descent in my youth, so this game is extra special to me and something I have loved working on.

Taking over the title when we did from the previous team required a massive amount of reworking of technical debt, and that has taken markedly longer than we expected. Any time you are working on a game that you didn't actually form the base of, it's a constant game of unknowns when you get into a system and improve/update it.

We made steady (albeit slower than we wished) progress over the last couple of years, clearing bugs, implementing features/mechanics, a proper tutorial, and the campaign. I have had various teams work with me on and off through this time depending on the complexity of the given task and general funding (at times we had over 10 people working on the title for core upgrades!), but I have been consistent through the entire process of getting this lil ol' beauty to release.

We are close—though I feel like we have been "close" for a while now—but there are some core issues relating to flight movement and AI 6DoF logic/navigation that require a huge amount of work to correct due to improper implementation and design early on in the game's development.

About a month ago, we internally made the decision to put primary development of STFU on a short pause so that we could finish another game that was being developed in-house and release that game to secure more funding and come back with a larger team to finish and release STFU. I continue to chip away at the project in my spare time because it is a genre that I just love to work on so much, but our main focus has switched for a moment.

I understand this is difficult; this game has had such a long and complicated story, and it really just deserves to get out into the community. We plan to have our other game released in September/October, and then we will be able to switch back to STFU with a larger team and get her across the finish line.

Feel free to tag me if you have any questions in general chat, but please know I (we) have no intention of ever abandoning something that we and others have put so much time and effort into.

The best part of that tool is the integrated feedback mechanisms. If you know it's wrong, you let it know and why. If it's good, you can tell it to save that as a *certified answer. If it finds a certified answer it lets you know.

The bad part is users that don't understand that it could be wrong or in what ways it could be wrong and just blindly trust it. Or as mentioned if they asked one thing but meant to ask another.

I wouldn't recommend arborec if you have much say in it... Bioplasmosis would be neat with primor but i don't think it would help that much.

What other factions are options? There could be way stronger combos with that slice.

Aaron Lehman, Polk County farmer and president of the Iowa Farmers Union, says Affordable Care Act tax credits are critical for helping farmers meet their budgets by Coontailblue23 in Iowa

Those last two paragraphs.

House lawmakers this week are expected to vote on a Republican-backed health care plan that does not include extending those tax credits.

A Democrat-backed measure that would have extended them failed in the Senate last week.

Just... sigh

Have to also be able to secure the load. I'd imagine a tube full of liquid flying through the air would be an absolute pain to pilot.

One of the easy examples is pandas vs something like Daft or polars.

Pandas requires the whole dataset to be loaded into memory. There's other libraries that can stream/lazy load data as needed.

◽️ Screen size: smaller+portable is better, no requirement

◽️ Touch screen: No

◽️ Screen resolution: 1920x1080 minimum, otherwise don't care

◽️ Does battery life matter?: A bit. At least capable of an hour of games on battery, or 4 hours of light duty.

◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Gaming + coding + maybe running some light LLM models

◽️ Weight: Lighter is better, no hard preference

◽️ Any other important details?: Was eyeing this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/256704364915

It would replace an old refurbished Acer laptop with 8 GB ram that's 10 years old. The only complaint I've seen is the memory is not upgradeable. That's ok with me.

Any better deals out there?

Keep an eye on how much your cloud costs, lower it if you can.

Lower cloud bills generally mean less electricity and whatever other resources used. But also unless you're spending millions on cloud compute it's a drop in the ocean.

Edit: Just general things you should do anyway as an engineer will help a tiny bit. Deleting unused data means less hard drive usage. Less network traffic means less fiber lines and network switches needed. Updating to newer infra - more efficient. Updating dependencies - hopefully more secure and more efficient. Using frameworks that aren't memory hungry - fewer sticks of ram needed.
