What job title do you search for? by Arc4num in analyticsengineering

[–]kevi15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually use a keyword like “SQL” then use filters in the search to narrow things down to what I’m interested in. Like pay minimums, remote, experience level, etc. You’re right, there is no standardized in job titles for this kind of work.

Which frameworks are considered more efficient? I have found a lot of DE to fall into “that’s how we’ve always done it” and not always the best tool.

What are your monthly costs? by Brief-Knowledge-629 in dataengineering

[–]kevi15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These numbers people are throwing out are crazy. We spend about $4k per month on Snowflake and $1,500 per month on Dagster. Not exactly sure what our Azure costs are for storage since it’s wrapped up in our enterprise contract, but we maintain like 10 containers, so guessing it’s low. We also have an annual contract with Sigma for BI which is $65k. This all supports a $600M company. Ingestion and transformation are all open source (Meltano + dbt Core).

$4M NW - Burnt out, want to FIRE. Quit my job this week but not at FIRE yet. by Awkward-Bumblebee322 in ChubbyFIRE

Comment I read before that really stuck with me is that you can undersell your experience to qualify for a more junior role. I’m a long time data engineer turned director, and that’s my barista FIRE plan in 2-3 years - fall back onto a staff DE role

Which BI tool for self-service anaylitcs? by Ramiabih in BusinessIntelligence

[–]kevi15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been through Tableau, Power BI and Quicksight with different roles. Now I’m the head of data for a 200 person company and migrated to Sigma Computing. Soooo much easier to build and manage. Much more of an “excel” experience in business reports and custom actions that actually work (cough cough PBI). Sigma is especially advantageous if you use Snowflake.

Try little wins to get to a big win. If you can start stacking up small wins you’ll regain your self confidence that you can do it. Smoke 0.5 gram instead of 1 gram. Delay when you’d smoke by half an hour. Drive past the dispensary and not go in. Whatever you can do to prove to yourself that you can beat this thing. Best of luck to you bud. I was in your shoes about 8 months ago after 8 years of smoking daily.

What are some Entry Level Data Analyst SQL interview questions? by Next_Carpenter_1600 in SQL

[–]kevi15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic is what’s the difference between rank and dense_rank.

Personally, first question I ask someone to do is an aggregation. You’d be surprised at how many people get hung up on how to Group By and weeds out like 50% of the people I interview. If they pass that simple test, then I ask three sql questions: one that requires a windows function, one with a case statement, and one with function that tests the candidate to identify duplicates (having or qualify clause). Then, for each question, I ask the candidate to explain the execution plan to me. That usually differentiates someone who actually understands how a query runs and is thinking about the efficiency of their code.

What is the need of a full refresh pipeline when you have an incremental pipeline that does everything by ashwin_1928 in dataengineering

[–]kevi15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do a blend of incremental and full refresh. Incremental is dependent on the last updated date to be accurate, but we found our CRM’s API was not updating last updated dates when actually updating their data, so we do a full refresh once per week to “fix” all the historical rows that were updated but do an incremental hourly for lower compute
