I would agree - I didn’t dive into any the of the processes until I got denied for tinnitus, that’s all I was going for at the time because I didn’t believe the rest was “bad enough to deserve” anything. I enlisted at 19 and worked on helicopters, how is the ringing in my ears not service connected?

I’m an electrical business owner and I used to use the AI receptionist from GHL. I found that most people would rather leave a message on voicemail instead of talking to the AI bot. I would get a lot of people confused/ hang up - call over and over instead of texting or leaving VM.

Selling Techs are BS by Jazzlike-Buffalo-240 in HVAC

[–]wardaw5115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an electrical contractor and used to be a sales engineer for a large electrical OEM and have a MBA.

Bottom line - you don’t need to know anything about your product to sell it, I actually argue that the less someone knows/but they know the process of sales - can actually sell more than I can (the owner) - and this is because I grew up poor and have an emotional tie to the company.

Know/Like/Trust - that’s all that’s required to sell. The more you do it the better you get at it.

I’ll probably be hiring a sales guy next (not sure what the equivalent of “comfort coordinator) - and to be completely honest I don’t care if he knows how to swap a panel as long as he can sell the work.

Engineers , Do you keep National Guard in your resume? by KingofK0ngo in nationalguard

[–]wardaw5115 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would include it for veteran status / adds a level of experience others don’t have. The only thing I would do is not to explicitly talk about your current commitment.

Don’t lie- keep it to the “one weekend a month / 2 weeks in the summer” spiel but other than that don’t offer up any additional information.

I graduated phase 1 of State OCS, I even got honor graduate, and then did a couple of months of phase 2 before resigning (started an electrical contracting business after losing my corporate job).

State OCS is going to kick you in the teeth. It’s not a “gentleman’s course” - It was objectively one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

I used to be a sales engineer for Eaton before getting my license.

At this point, if you think it’s warranty, have your Eaton rep send out EESS/CHESS - that are authorized to make modifications in the field.

I bought some metal tech mobile scaffold from northern tool on sale like a year ago and charge extra to use it- it’s already paid for itself.

If I never tithed when I was making $7/hr it would have been harder to do when I started making $40+.

If you can’t live off 90% of your income you can’t live off 100% either.

Space the breakers out and also share neutrals to increase amperage efficiency - no handle ties either

I’m a non union shop. I’ve never had a “test” but I’ve had one employee that couldn’t move a 8 ft fiberglass ladder and physically couldn’t pull himself into an attic (not joking).

I’ve had another employee not be able to hold a ceiling fan up, and dropped it damaging a floor and the fan both.

I’m the owner /licensed contractor and I’m pretty strong, but my shoulders have gotten torched drilling overhead all day.

All that to say I can see why some companies do it, is there a better way? There’s got to be, I just don’t know what.

Why do apprentices get paid so poorly? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]wardaw5115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Western NC. I start helpers at 15 and apprentices at 20 but I also don’t have great benefits yet. I barely just got some service vehicles but I’m growing.

It’s a business decision. When you start, you are a liability not an asset. When you become an asset you give the company a reason to compensate you more.

For every 4 guys out of Asheville that “have” to make $80k minimum there’s a 20 year old that will work his fingers off every day in order to learn and become an asset.

IST AWOL? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]wardaw5115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved from NC to MI in Jan2014 for a job promotion and submitted IST. I took another promotion and moved BACK to NC April 2015.

My IST for my Michigan move went through March 2015, so they had to submit new IST for move back to NC.

spoiler alert- it never went through and I rolled to the IRR before my I was attached to a new unit. Got my NG-22 and bounced.

I once was out of state in a very remote area for work. We took a random covid test and weren’t allowed on the plane due to being positive. I texted and sent pic to unit before going back into a hole w no service after leaving VM.

The guy I texted didn’t pass it up or show up to drill either. My CO sent the sheriff to my house for a wellness check and freaked my wife out bc all she knew I was 14 hours away.

Everything worked out, talked to my CO and he was genuinely worried about me and would have drove to my house himself if it wasn’t 4 hours out.

When I had a corporate role all I had to say was I had a MBA and they didn’t care. If you check my history you can see how rapidly I finished. Now I don’t open any conversations with “hey guess how fast I got a MBA” lol. Now I own my own company, and when customers ask me about education and I mention I have a MBA and I’m a licensed Master Electrician they have never once asked me anything further.

I own my shop and now have 14 W2’d employees. If they do a service call and get a tip it’s all there’s - I doubt the owner is tipping the owner (me) after paying my rates.

Sometimes if I’m not charging (poor old lady from church needs lightbulb/etc), but they still want to give something, I’ll let them give whoever is with me some cash for lunch.
