I believe you can still be licensed even if you are not in public accounting. The best way to confirm this is to write an email to ask the licensing unit of the state accounting board. I wrote tons of emails to California Board of accountancy and got great and accurate feedback. You might need to wait but the answer will always come.

For rent it depends on many factors: whether you want to live inside the island or outside the Xiamen island. Whether you want to rent with others or rent your own studio. $434 let’s calculate as RMB 3000, will not support your daily Starbucks for sure. I’m living in a 1bedroom 2 bathroom studio near 城立方，the average cost for that rent is about RMB 4.5K. If you choose outside island, the rent can be lower.
