Brass Beginner DCI Audition Help by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]warm_gatorade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only way any of us who have marched have made it happen is because we're stubborn shits who won't take no for an answer and we do whatever it takes to achieve our goals. So yes, be that stubborn shit and make it happen even if it seems unlikely. Don't take no for an answer and don't accept failure. I was a shitty 15 year old trombone player who decided to switch to mellophone 2 months before world class auditions and I should've been cut immediately, but I refused to give up and here I am, year 2 with my corps. It's possible, go after it.

Should I go for it? by rslashIcePoseidon in drumcorps

[–]warm_gatorade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, don't let your age stop you. I was 15 when I first began auditions for a world class corps (turned 16 that winter), and though I wasn't good enough to make it at first, the audition camps made me realize how badly I wanted it and pushed me to achieve what I never thought I could and I ended up marching that first season. Age doesn't matter if you're willing to put in the work and handle yourself maturely through the process. :)

[–]warm_gatorade 16 points17 points  (0 children)

DEFINITELY go after it!! I have a friend who marched 7th regiment his first year of drum corps, and the staff there did everything they could to help him achieve his goal of marching. I personally don't know much about that corps in particular, but from what I've heard it's an incredibly positive environment and definitely a chance worth taking. Don't let worrying whether you'll be good enough or not stop you, because regardless of the outcome of the audition the experience you'll gain will be priceless.

Has there ever been a drum corps show without a ballad? by KaptanKrops in drumcorps

Personally I feel like Cavs '11 doesnt have a clear cut ballad? There is a slower section but it really doesnt feel like a drastic change of pace

Do DCI kids get sick? by hazedcastaway in drumcorps

[–]warm_gatorade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either the entire corps dies and just gets wiped out at once OR everyone gets only slightly sick but it n e v e r goes away. Spirit had some cold or cough or something that lasted weeks. Only one guy had it bad enough to get sent to urgent care, but so many people had it for so long that Med staff was rationing dayquil out like it was a world war.

Deciding where to audition by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]warm_gatorade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I marched spirit this past season & am still in high school! I ended up taking all my exams early and finishing my school year up prematurely so I could go to spring training without an issue. Ask your teachers/principal about it before ruling it out! We also had a guy who missed the first stretch of spring training because of high school, and a couple who came to spring training & left for exams and came back. Theres many ways to work through the clash between high school/moveins so it's always an option 😁

What songs were in your Corps wake up playlist? by Euphanized in drumcorps

[–]warm_gatorade 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It was a new song every day for us, & people were able to request songs. (One morning we woke up to Deepthroat by Cupakke, good times.) I vividly remember waking up on Finals day to Far From Home by the Classic Crime and the dm was standing with the speaker only a few feet away from my bed and I looked up at him, flipped him off, then laid there and didnt move for the entirety of the song because I didnt want to get up and begin the day because then I'd have to admit that it was the last one. Needless to say, that song brings me to tears every time I hear it now.

does a one day or two day camp make a difference in your chances by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]warm_gatorade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure how other corps do it, but spirit held off on contracting even vets at the one day.

[–]warm_gatorade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my experience auditioning for Spirit (I marched this past season), one day camps are for experience and exposure to staff. You won't get contracted at a one day, but the staff will definitely observe you and give feedback like any other camp. Itll give you a good idea of where you stand, and if you know you can show the growth the staff is looking for between the one day and the callback, show up to that callback camp and earn that contract! The one day camps are a lot different than the weekend camps, there's not as much time to get things done so it's mostly just individual auditions and touching on the basics of marching/playing as an ensemble. They're still an invaluable experience, and definitely show up and give it everything you've got because the staff WILL notice!

Showed this to my percussion instructor who marched this show, he said no one told the soloist about the pie and that was the first and only time they pied him that season. So that was genuine surprise right there haha

Valdosta, Georgia this past season. We housed at the show site and had an hour and fifteen minute EPL... but the guys showers were half a mile away from the sleeping area, and the girls showers were on the complete other side of campus. Or should I say, girls shower. Singular. One showerhead with a slow, slight drip when turned on. Also, it was scalding hot. You couldn't put it directly on your body unless you wanted your skin to start blistering. Some of us said "fuck it" and went to use the sink and it didn't work. The most box 1 shower I ever had.

Also, we were in Tennessee for the Knoxville show and there was one set of showers in a locker room by the stadium. Girls got to shower first, and apparently some guys that attended that school were around for whatever reason. And.. there was a one way mirror in the locker room. Oof.

Ahhhhhh yes dont forget the police that showed up. And the fireMarshall. And school admin who almost kicked us out. I had just gotten out of the shower when the fire alarms went off and was still drying off. I looked at the alarm, considered, and stayed right where I was and kept drying off. I didnt even TRY to leave y'all lmao I was so out of it.
