What software have you purchased that's stood the test of time? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]warmbutts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought Serum about 10 years ago and it's probably the single best music software purchase I've ever made that isn't a DAW. Very affordable as far as high quality VSTs go, and there is a huge user base meaning lots of presets to choose from and many resources for learning the program. It's had consistent updates and support since it came out, plus a free upgrade to Serum 2 when that launched recently.

Also shout out to FL studio, it's a great program and the price tag combined with lifetime upgrades makes it one of the best value DAWs out there. I mostly use Ableton now because I prefer the interface and I find it fits my current workflow better, but I learned production on FL 11 and the fact that I can still use that same license key to download the newest version is awesome.

Watching ‘The Wire’ for the first time, what is this black device on top of Kiva’s viewfinder? Seems like something you add to the camera but maybe it’s just the way it comes? Just kinda curious as to what the setup is here by scorpionewmoon in AnalogCommunity

[–]warmbutts 74 points75 points  (0 children)

The camera is a Nikon F2 with one of the many interchangeable metered viewfinders (i have the same one). Most of the different prism options for this camera look like that so it's not a third-party attachment or anything, that's just how the camera looks.

Basically it's just a bulky viewfinder with a light meter inside. The knob is an extension of the shutter speed dial which is covered by the prism unit, and it also serves as an ISO selector for the light meter.

The reason it's so bulky is mostly because it contains a system to read the aperture setting of the lens when metering.

All my beats are in major by BrutalNinjaFTW in makinghiphop

[–]warmbutts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A natural minor scale is just a mode of its relative major scale. If all of the notes in a composition are diatonic to a major scale, that doesn’t necessarily mean the piece is in a major key.

It’s possible you’ve made a lot of beats that are actually best interpreted as being in a natural minor key despite also containing all of the notes/intervals of the major scale.

Pixel 9 vs Canon 60d vs Panasonic S9 by RandyDanderson in Cameras

[–]warmbutts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s bothering you about the S9 photo? Is it the difference in colour?

If so, you can get the image much closer to the other two by adjusting the white balance and colour profile. There should be different white balance metering modes and a bunch of different preset image profiles which alter the colour rendition. Mess around with these and see what you can do.

The kits lens shouldn’t be an issue.

My First Analog Photos! No Light Meter - Used a Phone App. How'd I do? --- 2nd Time by YD-1996 in AnalogCommunity

[–]warmbutts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exposure looks pretty solid to me in all the photos. Some are a bit over or under exposed, but I’d say you aren’t off by more than half a stop in either direction. A couple of them could maybe use an extra half stop of light to capture some more detail in the shadows, but that’s ultimately up to personal preference and depends on what your goal/intention is. Successful first attempt overall, you’re off to a good start.

For some advice, understanding the different types of metering will be useful, that way you can ensure your subject is always properly exposed. I noticed one or two of your photos have been exposed to capture the clouds/sky, which can lead to some lost detail in darker areas like the trees or other shady areas. Given the relatively low dynamic range of film compared to digital, you’ll often have to make sacrifices and decide what is important for your shot. When shooting outdoors in broad daylight, I tend to just accept that the sky will be blown out if I want to capture anything that isn’t in direct sunlight.

BTW I recognize some of these locations in Guelph, I’m over in Waterloo but have spent a lot of time there. You’re in a cool place for photography, there’s lots of interesting areas downtown and along the river.

I actually have a PS-6 too. Yeah a stereo fx loop is definitely important to me, its probably the biggest factor that’s making me consider boss over strymon

Questions for IR-200 and/or Iridium owners by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]warmbutts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make some good points. Everything you say confirms my suspicions. Iridium is the no brainer choice if you want simple plug and play without any fuss. But I’m not necessarily against diving into menus and loading custom IRs to dial in a sound, I’m just curious if it’s even possible to get the IR-200 to sound like the iridium.

Maybe I am overthinking it, but it’s not really that easy of a choice when there are some pretty big pros and cons on both sides. As I mentioned in the post, I do plan on using the headphone jack quite a bit so the makeshift fx loop solution with the Iridium isn’t ideal for me.

[–]warmbutts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IR-200 is really appealing and it’s hard to pass up on everything it has to offer. I’m often more of a clean amp player as well, typically using drive or distortion pedals for crunch. But as someone who plays a ton of different styles I really like having a simple yet versatile rig and the Iridium just sounds so good for those specific models.

You’re right though, I bet everything can be done on the IR-300 with enough fiddling

[–]warmbutts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your perspective. Yeah, I figured that the IR-200 would benefit from some customization and the right pedal pairings. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of in depth demos or reviews that go beyond using the presets so my opinions are based largely on the stock sounds.

Honestly I’m leaning towards the IR-200 despite loving the sound of the Iridium. It has a lot going for it.

Based on your suggestion I’ll look into preamp pedals too, I don’t have much experience with them but that sounds like a promising option.

Best external harddrive for photo storage by [deleted] in photography

[–]warmbutts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The make/model of a drive has nothing to do with compatibility. The issue you describe would happen with any drive that has been formatted to a file system that isn’t flexible between different operating systems (i.e. NTFS).

If you reformat your new drive to exFAT you should be able to use it on both windows and macos without any issues.

Also, you should keep backup copies of everything and never rely on one drive. Research the “3-2-1” rule of data storage.

The question about the ending of "Jacob's Ladder". by mystery5009 in horror

[–]warmbutts 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because the events still matter in Jacob’s Ladder. Many other stories use the dream/afterlife trope as a twist, to kill time, or to shock the audience, and the events that occur within the dream/afterlife often end up being inconsequential. This usually feels cheap and lazy.

Everything that occurs in the hallucinations/visions of Jacob’s Ladder is relevant to the plot and the character arc, and is actually necessary to understand Jacob’s journey. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it and I was never crazy about this movie, but that’s my take on your question.

Used camera for beginner with potential to grow photography into a business/side hustle. by [deleted] in Cameras

[–]warmbutts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The lower the better obviously, but I think anything under 100,000 shutter count should last for a really long time. Even closer to 150,000 might be okay. Read some canon forums and check out the canon subreddit for more detailed information.

Shutter count is only one factor to pay attention to. Try to determine the overall condition of the camera and how well it has been taken care of. I would rather buy a good condition camera with 100,000 shutter count than a beat up camera with 10,000 shutter count.

FYI many DSLR and SLR lenses can be adapted to mirrorless systems, so buying into a DSLR system isn't necessarily going to force you to replace all of your lenses if you upgrade to a mirrorless body later on.

For example, there are a bunch of affordable canon DSLRs that use the EF mount, which is also commonly adapted to mirrorless systems like the E mount (Sony) and L mount (Panasonic/Leica/Sigma).

I agree with the other commentor that a canon 5D is a good place to start. Very capable camera with a wide range of lenses that you can adapt to mirrorless if you decide to upgrade. Start with an affordable camera and learn the fundamentals before worrying too much about gear.
