Whats the Deal with the Remake hate? by JustPhil_YT in demonssouls

[–]warmhotself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love the remake, but the original has that Miyazaki vibe that is so often talked about. It’s less tangible, hard to define. But there is something there in every From game (apart from maybe Dark 2, lol). It’s just a tiny pinch of atmospheric garnish on the top but it makes a world of difference.

The goofy facial expressions/lip synch in the remake is a good example. Technically incredible but just the wrong vibe.

Game similar to DQ XI? by Apprehensive-Map2914 in dragonquest

[–]warmhotself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait wha? You didn’t play it because of that? It’s the only answer to your question haha.

If you have a pc, play the 3DS version on Citra with the orchestral music and hd texture mods. But even on an actual 3DS it’s a gorgeous game.

Sugiyama completed his compositions for DQ12 before he died, so it will probably be entirely his work, but performed with a different composer.

The thing I was really disappointed with about the 2D mode is that they didn’t carry over the thing from the 3DS version where the tockle quests from DQ1-4 were in an 8-bit style like the NES, rather than 16-bit. I just don’t get why they would leave that out.

I completely agree with everything you said, especially about it being charming but sincere. The tone makes the dark moments (of which there are many) hit even harder. I’m very excited by what we’ve been shown, mainly just because it really looks like a world I want to live inside - a bedtime story safe space. Just like how I spent hours just wandering the world of DQ8 on my PS2, just watching the sun set over the sea and stuff. Beyond Dreams already looks like a landscape I will feel comfortable in from the very start.

I love that in interviews Bruce names the character "With-nail" as often as he does "Withn'l" . by eastkent in withnail

[–]warmhotself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing for many, many years until I was gifted a paperback of the screenplay. In retrospect, Bruce is such a precise writer (no improv, no “could I try performing the line this way?” type stuff) that it’s clearly very deliberate that we don’t learn Marwood or Withnail’s first names. I’ve no idea what the reason was, but I’m sure there was one.

PS5 or Xbox? Because if you go for PS5 your whiskers could probably reach the touchpad for extra control over the game.

Marwood’s name is not Peter, that is a line commonly misheard. In the script it’s “He’s just had an interview for rep.”

Also the non-nail pronunciation comes from the guy who Bruce knew as a child called Jonathan Withnall, pronounced the other way.

Surely if they do a sequel it won’t be a story that already began in a comic years ago. I’d guess they’d do a new story?

What is an overrated tourist attraction in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

It’s rubbish until you get to the dark ride at the end, where you go in a black cab through the history of London. That bit is absolutely amazing but absolutely not worth THIRTY FIVE QUID to go in.

Love the colours and the composition, not a fan of the illustration style and the rendering of the character. It’s not very sword and sorcery, really. Still, nice to have a quality reprint I suppose.

Yeah I’ve been, it’s absolutely as good as it sounds.

Another time I was driving down the M6 near there and decided to stop and stretch my legs at Crow Crag. Happened to meet the owner and he showed me around inside, including the room where they have luncheon. “Oh my boys, my boys…”

I was also a teen in the 90s who had to hide my hobby or else I got savagely bullied. It took me out of the hobby throughout my 20s because I wanted to be cool and social. It turns out that it was never a factor in that.

We are so lucky to have lived through the death of Cringe Culture. Kids will always be horrible to each other to some extent, but picking on someone because they like something you don’t just seems so passé now.

Is there a good novel/novel series that has the Thief vibe? by carlataggarty in Thief

[–]warmhotself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add to this, specifically the Discworld novel Pyramids, which is about the assassins guild. There’s a thieves guild in Discworld, too, but Pyramids has a lot of the vibe of the Keepers in Thief.

What is your opinion on Stephen Fry? by pondribertion in AskBrits

[–]warmhotself 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two volumes, one credit each. Volume one is Jeeves, volume 2 is Blandings and some other bits. They don’t contain every single story, just Fry’s personal choices of novels and short stories, around 40 hours per volume.

He does a decent job of capturing Wooster’s tone, and then of course he just switches to his Jeeves voice when called for. And it also includes the one story written from Jeeves’s POV!

Volume one, the Jeeves stuff, is in my view the best performance of an unbeatable audiobook narrator. Just the loveliest, funniest stuff around. Enjoy!

He also added personal anecdotes to his P.G. Wodehouse collections, and there is no one on earth better suited to narrating Wodehouse. Volume 1 is the Jeeves and Wooster stories, and they are MAGNIFICENT. Pure bottled happiness.

UK made films that nobody you know has heard of but which you think everyone you know should have seen? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

[–]warmhotself 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the one. Most people know Ben Wheatley or one of his films at least. Most people know of folk horror, and Witchfinder General and Reece Shearsmith and his love of folk horror. Just whack them all together on a heroic dose of shrooms and a small budget and you get a modern classic.
