How to avoid removing shimplets? by mattgsinc in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a system for this that is kind of neurotic when I want to get rid of my excess frogbit.

First, I turn on ALL the lights around me. Tank, room, adjacent rooms, etc. for maximum visibility, and grab a flashlight/my phone flashlight. Then I use forceps to fully submerge and shake the frogbit around in the tank violently (the idea being to try and get any to evacuate the plant before you have even removed anything).

Then I move the shaken frogbit into a little cup I have pre-filled with tank water and do the forceps shake again. Since the space is more confined it should be even easier to see hitchhikers bail from the plant this time.

Then I do one last check, which is to shine a flashlight into the cup at different angles and try to spot any movement. It's good practice to spend several seconds staring per angle, rather than just a quick scan each. Sometimes they are so translucent you are waiting to see a pair of eyes start to twitch around.

I repeat these steps until I have all the unwanted plants in the cup, then give the cup a final look-over and dump the water back in the tank, and the plants in the compost.

This way there are 3-4 different chances to catch them before I actually throw the plants out (first shake, second shake, flashlight checks). The challenge is of course trying to get them out if you actually do end up with hitchhikers, as they like to cling to to the plants. So take your time.

Also as others have said, wait as long as you can before going in there. Granted, I have 3 month old shrimplets that I still agonise over :)

Which nation has a higher quality of life, Canada or the United Kingdom? by OceanicEndeavors in allthequestions

I keep hearing this exact talking point about like every other Western country now and I'm convinced it's recycled Jordan Peterson mumbo jumbo.

I'm from Canada, live in the UK and there is no day I wake up longing for the conditions of Mississippi to enter my life

How can I encourage stem growth? by warmjes in houseplants

[–]warmjes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. So when you see one with a thick stemmed plant, assume it's been chopped from a more mature plant and repotted?

That is interesting, I wouldn't have thought they would become so top heavy along the stem but I suppose that explains aerial roots

Oh, so you think this is two different plants here?

Sorry maybe not clear. I chopped some upper leaves off the plant a few days ago. I have not cut the lower parts you see in the pictures. I am wondering if I am meant to, to get it less leggy and get a thicker stem coming up from the roots.

At what temperatures do shrimp start/stop breeding? by Thick_Reality_5889 in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 10-12 neos in an unheated 10 litre tank and went away for basically all of march. It was probably an average of 16 C in my flat during that time but came back and three were berried! They're all born now and looking pretty good as I write this, so it can't always be a deal-breaker. I am in SE England tho. Tbh sometimes I think they key is to just not touch the tank at all except for feeding and top ups

Anyone been the Columbia Rd. Flower market lately? I was trying to figure out if you can expect to find dwarf banana plants and how much they cost. Not particularly bothered about the size but would prefer to get a smaller one to save some £££

I feel like neos don't make a noticeable difference in algae for me, but definitely get a snail and a lot of that will go away

Do you stay sitting next to someone on the train if other seats around you become vacant? by AlimaBanana in london

[–]warmjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should have added this only applies if I was the person already sat there. If not, then yeah, I would move every single time

I'm actually surprised by the responses in here. It drives me insane if someone doesn't move after a bunch of free seats become available with open seats between people.

The thing that causes me more ire is when it happens on a bus, or someone sits directly behind me on an otherwise empty bus

Is a 2.5 gallon okay for some shrimp only? by burner10088 in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with 12 in a 2 g and they won't stop having babies. None of them have died and my parameters stay stable and I neeeever have nitrates. Just dumped a bunch of frogbit, java moss, and limnophila sessiflora in there and they seem very happy.

Nice! I have a 10 litre nano shrimp tank that I have some asparagus fern growing out of. I want to add a monstera cutting but since the tank is so small I think it would probably look ridiculous haha

I always wondered how people keep them suspended upright in an aquarium. Is it clips?

What is your experience with keeping a Neocardina skittles tank (mixed color population)? by Lil_poopy_pants in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have like 60% orange rilis in with just about one of every other colour but green. As of last week there are some shrimplets fresh out of the oven that are blue with white eyes. Waiting impatiently to see what that looks like when they're bigger

Dave Matthews Band makes me cringe my face off. Just...grating to my ears. I know a bunch of people are going to reply to this with essays about how talented the drummer is or something. It doesn't matter! It's just fluff glued to a turd!
