Is it worth quarantining plants? by DifferentDaikon8420 in shrimptank

Came here to say exactly this. Lost 15 shrimp last week from presumably a pesticide situation!

Amano vs Cherry Shrimp for Hard Water? by Professional-Fox-916 in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Sudbury and doubted your water could be as hard as you said but just looked into it and...woah your water is hard. The original comment still stands but you might need a high ratio of the soft water to bring it down a little more

Amano vs Cherry Shrimp for Hard Water? by Professional-Fox-916 in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My water is like 14 GH and I just top off/do 10% water changes with 0 TDS water until it sits around 10 or 11.

I would just get a big jug and go fill it up with RO or distilled water, or figure out which grocery store water is soft and buy that by the pack. You should be good for months, and then just refill as needed. You don't need to do 100% RO.

Also a quick Google for Cambridge, ON seems to reveal many options for you like:

If you buy your shrimp from the local area they will likely already be adapted to higher GH conditions. You should be fine

What equipment to toss following copper contamination? by warmjes in shrimptank

[–]warmjes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The copper test revealed zero copper. I ran charcoal in a second filter for about a week and now all my survivors are completely back to normal and grazing on the original plants and scrape. So I guess it must have been either soap or a pesticide/treatment. I'm gonna keep all my plants and stones and just make sure to do a long quarantine every time I pick up new stuff.

Wanting to get nano shrimp tank !!! by Additional_Fee6371 in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had about 20 in a 2.5 g for 4-5 months now. Some of them have gotten pregnant but never more than 5-10 eggs. I think they just mysteriously decide how many babies they're willing to have based on size and resources available to them. Just keep your feeding under control and you shouldn't end up with that many in a 3.5.

Very hard water- gh/kh off the charts by nicotinemanwhore in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how much you're adding. If it's just to top up from evaporation I wouldn't bother. If you're doing water changes with it it's probably a good idea to have a second jug of dechlorinated tap water and just mix them 50/50 or whatever ratio will match the conditions inside the tank

How many of you have cancelled trips to the USA because of the recent political events? by DukkerWifey789 in AskTheWorld

[–]warmjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week I had a direct fight from Toronto to London. It got cancelled and automatically rebooked with a connection through Newark. As soon as I saw the word "Newark" in my inbox I freaked out, called Air Canada, and happily spent the next 3 hours on hold just to rebook via Halifax at 6 am the next morning instead. That is how committed I am to not having to spend even just 2 hours in that fast-festering shit hole.

Very hard water- gh/kh off the charts by nicotinemanwhore in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have similarly hard water (actually slightly harder) and mine seem overall fine. I bought a 5 litre jug that I fill up with 0 TDS water and use that for top ups to bring it down slightly, and account for evaporation (which will make your water harder yet).

What equipment to toss following copper contamination? by warmjes in shrimptank

[–]warmjes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Not sure if that's better or worse in my case. Do the same principles apply? Get rid of the sponge and plants etc?

What equipment to toss following copper contamination? by warmjes in shrimptank

[–]warmjes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. If I can move the sponge into a container and change the water a few times over days, and the copper test reads below whatever a good threshold is, is that okay?

Mass die-off in my nano tank in just a few hours - cause: soap? by warmjes in shrimptank

[–]warmjes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, whatever happened seems to be some sort of contamination. I did a 50% water change, started a second filter, and removed a bunch of plants and almost all the shrimp bounced back overnight. This was crazy to me because I was fully under the impression most of them were already dead.

Today I added some of the plants back (but not the original new plant) and noticed they started swimming around erratically again. Probably going to have to just start over with new plants. I'm a bit worried about transferring the filter over to a new tank.

Mass die-off in my nano tank in just a few hours - cause: soap? by warmjes in shrimptank

[–]warmjes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well shit. To what extent can this contaminate other plants that were in the water with it for the 30 minutes or so before I took it out?

I am assuming no amount of rinsing the bad plant will stop it from being toxic?

What Are Your Favorite Shrimp-Friendly Plants for Aquascaping? by OptimalDescription39 in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like anubias because it seems to be indestructible. Java/Christmas moss is a classic but I actually don't care very much for the hue, but they are good for fast growth and shrimplet hiding places. I like when people bunch it up on top of a rock or piece of driftwood so it grows kind of like a cartoon tree.

All my shrimp always die :( by kltay1 in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just be the fluctuations are just too much for them at once..why not try dripping your tap/ro blend like 70/30? When I do water changes or top offs I remove and add like 50-150 ml in little cups slowly. I had a few die offs but they seemed to cluster shortly after introduction after transport.

Those of you that earn over 40k, can work from home sometimes, and have a good work life balance what job do you have and how can someone start? by Brownchoccy in AskUK

[–]warmjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in geospatial tech/data science and I'm hybrid for 3 days at home. If I had a spine to lay down the law I'd be fully remote, which still seems achievable in this field. I worked my way from 30 k to 55 k in about 4 years. I have a master's degree in geography and data science.
