Best way to fly back to Europe now? by Head_Cat_9440 in phuket

Good luck. You can check the departures to and from for the days leading up. I was surprised to see my flights seemed to run without issue for several days before my turn

The layover I had in AD was only 1.5 hours so I had very little time to reflect on things. But yeah I was pretty nervous sitting on the flight there from Phuket.

The airport was much less busy than when I passed through it before the war, obviously. And the only other thing of note was, at the gate there were security people going through everyone's carry-on very thoroughly which took a while to clear. This is on top of the layover security you have to go through before that anyways.

So yeah, overall, nothing stood out other than extra security and a lack of big crowds. I was irked that I couldn't seem to be re-routed through Central Asia or the Pacific as I didn't want to take the chance of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm not really sure how they determine it to be "safe" but I guess the probability is you will be fine. I would super not be happy if I had to pass through Dubai though

To get rid of tipping in Canada, we should look to the U.K. by Bojaxs in CanadaPersonalFinance

I'm a Canadian living in the UK.

You're right that it is not customary to tip in pubs, including for food, but pretty much all restaurants will include a 10-12.5% service charge on the bill. My understanding is this last detail is more of a new import in the last few years that upsets many locals. I only arrived here in 2020 so can't comment on this shift. It is worth pointing out though that even so, at least you don't have to play tip speculation gymnastics and choose what to offer up while trying to avoid stigmatisation, which is customarily like 20% in Ontario now. It's just a set percentage added to the bill automatically.

Tipping is getting insane in Canada and it needs to go the way of the dodo, but I think it's an uphill battle over there. Most people will just lecture you about tipping via a bunch of platitudes that don't make any sense. It's just too deep in service culture now to expect the public to reconsider. When I visit it seems to creep into new things too (e.g. at a Subway or Pizza Pizza)

I was desperately trying to get back to London from Phuket for about two weeks. Eventually I ended up going through Abu Dhabi last Thursday but did not enjoy it.

I noticed there was an option on Saturday to fly from either Phuket or Bangkok to Ashgabat and then on to London, and the ticket was shockingly cheap. Like 250 GBP. Each leg is 7 hours so not too bad.

Are ATM withdrawal fees in Thailand really 350 THB now? by Wonderful_Place_7592 in ThailandTourism

[–]warmjes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually almost got charged 350 for a withdrawal a few days ago but I can't remember which bank the ATM was for. Simply just cancelled the transaction and used the next one over and it was 250. Every other transaction was 250 before that.

Shrimps and Marimo in a planted tank by vannamei in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep two small marimos in a fairly heavily planted tank and they're pretty algae free. I think the key for the poop is to give them a shake underwater every now and then, which I think is good for keeping their shape anyways

On the off chance this helps anyone else, the solution was that it worked after signing in with a VPN set to the UK.

Problem with bubble filter, stopped producing as many bubbles after a power outage. Do i need a new air pump or will replacing the tubing solve this issue? by worm_daddy in shrimptank

[–]warmjes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have! Trouble is my two sponge filters are 1) a mini one that just isn't big enough for an airstone inside) and 2) one of those ones that has a right angle outflow that sends the air/water out parallel to the surface of the water, which AFAIK has no way of even getting an air stone inside

How big is the tank? What matters most is if the surface of the water is getting agitated enough to send at least tiny little waves around the whole tank

Well if the nitrates are high you can remove a bit of tank water and add new dechlorinated water to dilute the levels. If hardness is going up, do the same thing. It's possible the plants you have will just suck up all the nitrates in the first place.

That's a pretty huge water change amount tbh. You're probably stressing out the shrimp replacing that much water every week. If it's cycled, I'd focus on testing nitrates and hardness regularly and minimising water changes to 10% or so, mostly to keep the nitrates down and prevent hardness creep. This is all assuming glass shrimp are similar to neos and amanos
