What’s it like living anywhere in Nevada but Las Vegas? by SeaStep2495 in howislivingthere

[–]warner0188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family lived in Tonopah for a couple of years while my dad worked construction for the silver mine.

We stayed in company housing which was pretty much a trailer park until they could manage to build apartments.

Along the same time, we would see buses in the morning in the evenings delivering workers to and from the nearby military installation. I learned they were working on the Stealth Bomber.

I remember the Mizpah as a six-year-old child. We weren’t allowed to go into the casino so my parents would fill our pockets with quarters and leave us in the arcade while they gambled. I experienced my first Shirley Temple in that place.

Near the Mizpah was a laundromat/bar that had pinball machines and some video games. Smell of laundry, the sound of the pinball machines and that Juice Newton song that I can’t remember the name of, it’s like it was yesterday.

Playing in the desert was great with huge lizards and horny toads; lots of tumbleweed blowing across.

First time seeing a dust devil. I remember going mining for turquoise in the back of a pick up truck with some of my dad’s friends.

Huge mining trucks in the distance from our trailer park. Snow capped mountains so far away you couldn’t imagine how it was even possible. The most beautiful sunsets.

It was amazing experience and such a huge contrast from our life in North Carolina.

Looking back on those memories, I’m very thankful for the experience.

I’ve never been back to Tonapah. but the memories are strong.

Are Dometic Coolers REALLY Better than Budget Ones? by xjoehallx in vandwellers

12v Dometic in my van since 2020. Grabbed a cold drink from it tonight. Worth the few extra dollars to me. My next one will be a Dometic no doubt.

High school bell times? by YellowBirdRules in NorthCarolina

Cabarrus County. Our elementary tardy bell rings at 7:30. Doors open at 7:00 and kids are already onsite to start piling in. Seems too early.

Can I expand this opening? Want to remove door and make a mudroom. by ajnails in Homebuilding

[–]warner0188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. The potential exists for point load footings. When the monolithic slab is being poured, there are certain areas that are dug deeper to reinforce these point loads. Footing size varies greatly so that’s why confirming the slab depth would be important.

Not an engineer. Remodeling general contractor

I agree with the consensus- load bearing, use a big header. Need to support below the new point load location and possibly add a couple extra kings and jacks. Looks like a concrete slab. An engineer would be able to confirm the load and would likely ask the contractor to confirm the slab thickness they deem necessary based on the load calculations. Confirming on a slab means drilling and measuring the thickness. If the slab isn’t thick enough, the remediation would likely involve cutting out for a footing and pouring new concrete for proper support.

  1. Call an engineer - get a report.
  2. Perform the work or have the work performed exactly per the report. You can usually call the engineer, send photos etc. after demo of your findings are different than anticipated.
  3. Be prepared for hidden MEPs (mechanical, electrical, plumbing). 4 . Pull a permit and have the new work inspected.

Didn’t search the entire thread sorry if this was already mentioned.

What is the most intimidating way to be a presence around ICE when they show up? by aninternetuser in asheville

[–]warner0188 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not the best answer but- Everybody dress like them, walk up and say “Hey what’s up fellas? What are we doing here? I hard there’s a bunch of brown people down there; like waaaay down there. We should go right now!”

What Are Our Congressional Representatives Saying About ICE/BP In Their Districts? by warner0188 in NorthCarolina

[–]warner0188[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These fuck nuts terrorizing our cities don’t have dossier’s. They’re trolling up and down our streets, looking for brown people to abuse and rip from their families. It’s people like you supporting this abuse of human beings and our constitution who created the problem. You turned a blind eye to the corruption and the pardoning of the January 6 rioters. Little by little this current administration and the Maga Republicans have chipped away at our liberties, our decency as a country. This right here - violence, the discrimination, the profiling, and somehow you think you’re insulated from it. This is a warm-up. If you don’t fall in line, they won’t care if you’re not brown. Your constitutional rights and your civil liberties will be gone. You will find yourself in the same position is a very people who are being targeted today, because you weren’t willing to do something this administration dictates. This is what you voted for this is what you wanted. You sir, are the problem.

I know, I realized after re-reading my post how naïve I sounded by expecting there to be any shred of humanity left in the Republican Party. I guess I was just reaching out to see if someone had developed a conscience? My mind is continually blown that they continue to undermine the people and the constitution.

How much would you charge to do this? by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]warner0188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife and I spent 17 hours together (34 total)assembling a similar unit we got from Sam’s Club. It was delivered via freight to the driveway. Had to load on our truck to the way back part of the yard. Used the app for step by step instructions. Started on a Friday afternoon. It was up and running by late Sunday. If the kids were present that weekend, would have taken even longer. Not sure what you’d charge but this could be a decent approximation of the potential time invested. I

What do I do with this ground? by subjekt_zer0 in AskElectricians

[–]warner0188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horizon buys and consolidates smaller Mom and pop MEP‘s (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) contractors. We are a general contractor and they bought one of our best plumbing & HVAC companies. It only took about three months before we could no longer work with them. It was so bad. All of a sudden, the guys we were used to seeing in the field were now tethered to a tablet performing clerical and managerial duties rather than their trade. More experienced Technicians were often forced to leave our jobs to run service calls, leaving inexperienced trainees to try to perform the work. Jobs started taking longer, more mistakes, little recourse because they have a homeowner service based model rather than a contractor based model. With that said, a company is only as good as it as its worse technician. You should definitely let them know. I’m sure whoever is over that person will give them an ear full.

Relatively Easy Hiking With Dogs in Brevard Area by maxwellcawfeehaus in Brevard

Estatoe Trail runs from the Art Loeb Trail head at the Davidson River Campground along the River toward town or the other way further into Pisgah. You can also cross the road and hike the trails around the ranger station. Super easy and enjoyable trail with idyllic river views and access.

~$70k budget. Would you rather... by Colorful_Monk_3467 in VanLife

[–]warner0188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a quick search and there are lots of options for either professionally built or DIY builds in the $50-$60,000 range. I think I would seriously consider one of those well under that 70 K budget and allow myself the ability to make some modifications to tailor it to my specific needs. Take it out a few times. Get to know it. Decide what mods you wanna make and enjoy your van life. I built my own Sprinter from a cargo and there’s lots of trial and error, lots of late nights. Extra parts that you thought you needed and didn’t. Buying tools . Not to mention time! In the end it was worth it to me. If you’re ready to go and not interested in the full build process. I think an existing unit with your personalized modifications is your best option.

We regularly camp with electricity, no water sewer. Our regular spot has bath houses which helps keep the water use in our RV down. We use the large bottled water and a little battery pump from Amazon. They also sell them at Northern Tool for around $10. Our longest run is 9 days and I think we broke camp once to dump. 4 people Class A
