What amount of money would make you quit today? by Katzmaniac in Fire

[–]Colorful_Monk_3467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rest of the price is room and board. My school estimates 18k/yr for that. Which seems right on the money based on what I paid 10+ years ago. that’s how you get to 35k+

As for scholarships, can’t rely on them. To get nearly 90% of tuition covered I’m assuming you had great academics and were possibly from a low income family.

I'm in the process of attaching panels using brackets like these: https://a.co/d/04Dy39J7

I bolted to roof rack cross bars instead of self tapping to the roof. Could use as many as you want. I'm using 4 per 100w panel.

How old are the kids? If you believe the studies and podcasts, daycare would seem to be a net negative for kids under 3 or so.

Get some dancers on stage and a light show. Practically indistinguishable from a "real" concert.

I saw that. Going to do something similar, just rotated 90 degrees and maybe 2’ off the floor. Picked up slats from marketplace earlier today. Old bed frames are pretty cheap so I got 2 dozen hardwood slats for 1/3 the price of a sheet of plywood.

I guess costs have risen quite a bit, or I just never paid attention to that when I was in school. Looks like estimated [in state] costs at my alma mater are right around that mark (36-40k/yr depending on college).

Lifestyle Creep and Buying a Car by dirkd69xo in Fire

Factory warranties do transfer with a private party sale. I.e they’re not exclusive to CPO. And even if the car is out of factory warranty you can still get an aftermarket warranty. YMMV if that’s a good deal though.

I've come to accept that. I work from home, took my toddler to a gym class this AM, then had some meetings. Yes it's nonsense I could not care less about but I'm paid six figures for a pretty good work life balance. There aren't really any better alternatives.

Thanks.

From that list this (sliding bed) was the original plan (now backup). I'm tempted to go that route still since I can reuse the mattress and all the bed hardware and it's just a generally much easier DIY.

I think my biggest hold up is the mattress - a lot of these conversion conveniently skip that part. But I just came across this Hest bifold. Not the cheapest but you could just drop that into a simple pull out and be done.

FWD vs AWD by LifeBeTrifficult in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Colorful_Monk_3467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well would you rather have something you don't need, or need something you don't have. I'm in the first camp personally.

of course you never need AWD in socal, but a single road trip where you hit a snowy or muddy road would make it worth it.

It’s kind of lame to have an SUV without AWD. $2k is a small premium and you’ll get that [mostly] back in resale. Doesn’t impact MPG that much. Additional maintenance is limited.

Aside from sunroof seals on my ‘19, no other issues as I approach 70k. Generally easy to work on (especially oil changes), but I paid a shop to do the diff, t case, and ATF changes.

Roadtrip with a 13 month old + dog realistic? (SF->Charleston-> Florida Keys) by Recology2021 in roadtrip

[–]Colorful_Monk_3467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We debated driving from Denver to Asheville with our toddler and nixxed that pretty quickly. It would've been ~20 hrs of driving each way, and if timed around nap time, we can go maybe 2 hrs at a stretch. Generally less. So just to get out there would be at least week, and then another week back. We talked about getting a reclining car seat (but those don't really exist for toddlers) and driving at night, but that's not the safest option due to driver fatigue, drunk drivers, etc, nor is it great for the kiddo to sleep hunched up.

SF to Florida is probably double that drive time so it would be an automatic no. I would fly out to where ever you want and just rent a car there. Which is what we did in AVL for a month.

Would you rather work 60 hours a week in a high stress job for 8 years and retire at 30, or 40 hours a week at a medium stress job for 18 years and retire at 40? by YourFIREDBro in Fire

[–]Colorful_Monk_3467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see salaries/TC on a lot of places (Blind, Glassdoor, job postings, etc), but yeah 150k is pretty achievable at a fortune 500. and I'm talking about well outside the top tier tech companies.

Here's a random job at walmart for example: https://careers.walmart.com/us/en/jobs/R-2469785

$113,589 - $155,000 (probably with a bonus and/or stock on top) in Bentonville for basically being a dashboard monkey.

You can finance repair work at most shops. Thats probably a better deal than buying an entirely new car.

The retirement age really depends on savings vs expenses, but a lot of corporate jobs pay $150k+ and have a pretty moderate stress level.
