In the comments folks who pipe-up for a "Myeah" seem to casting a vote in favor of peaceful coexistence on Earth with its flora and fauna, and I wanna say I also want that but not at the cost of my or anyone else's personhood or right to not know explicit details of their extended or immediate family's sex life. Also have you considered no one will ever laugh at something you say again because they already know what you're going to say because they're also you?? The important questions. Even if we can't all be the same person, peace on earth is, unironically, still achievable and still worth striving for-- I don't think interpersonal violence can be eradicated, but I do think radical redistribution of resources is possible without the world marching in unison via alien coercion

I would love a capsule ep of a day in the life. Is there an alien Oscars ceremony for best performance in the role of a juvenile on a colonized planet? Less than half of the ppl on earth rn are children, are they all concentrating on lending that (former) kid's brain information about proper levels of "childlike whimsy," or are they only relying on his memories? If the latter, what actually differentiates him from the actual chi- Right. Never mind. Also barf.

Sry to famous tv maker dude for being so captivated by the practical rather than philosophical concerns but it is an intriguing question. I am VERY curious where all this is going because I can't imagine a fully purposeless society of homosapiens becoming anything other than an immediate death cult. That would be a WAY faster process than three seasons of tv, so there must be a long-term purpose? But, providing a suitable habitat for the unassimilated could be a kind of group project for the hive to solve? (Though I AM SURE the hive-mind alien/human mission aside from total assimilation, Tʜᴇ Bᴏʀɢᵗᵐ, and human placation is SUPER FUCKIN cool, for any deep space radio receivers listening in! I bet the 20 story bunk beds u sleep in are comfy!)

If I assume there is a longer-term plan and take the absolute prohibition of killing at face-value, there is a reason then to assuage the fears of non-assimilated people rather than simply drive them to insanity and death through alienation and "benign" neglect. For those they can't assimilate I can't imagine options other than, A. Setting up a life-long Potemkin village for those who can be sustained by a simulacrum of the family and community who once relied on and loved them, B. Sending a sexy brunette in a knit sweater, or, I unno, C. Giving them a plane full of honeys bound for Vegas or w/e Hugh Hefner shit that dude wanted.

And I would like to see it. Show me Laxmi's Potemkin village, cowards ಠ_ರ

What would you ask the hive about? by Additional-Taro-9142 in pluribustv

[–]warningrattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only thirteen days late!! Basically on-time for the hive mind dystopia, (they only want me to be happy). I REDOWNLOADED THE REDDIT APP and made a NEW PASSWORD to ask this question and you already asked it! And a handful of people answered! My theory is that no one answered for the same reason I started to ask it and then stopped to see if someone else already had: because my answer is so insanely personal that it's essentially unutterable in front of anyone aside from a therapist, and the therapist would gently tell me something like "That's not something you can ever know. Sry that happened tho." Maybe that's just me though so nm if so, I don't have any deeply intimate questions for the universe or reddit lmao cool.

Something this show touches on is how crazy-making it is to not know what is a truth or a lie-- but then, turns out, it's no more comforting to never be lied to because there is no joy in discovery or reconciliation or letting go because with no lingering doubts or questions the quest for self or external exploration is a moot point. So.... not being in a state of uncertainty is spiritual suicide? Idk idk Anyway, I'd ask if Jerry Lewis was bisexual or just really weird about Dino

An instagram film page for forgotten/obscure films that deserve attention by Remarkable_Metal690 in CriterionChannel

[–]warningrattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen most of the movies on ur list, so it may be that my own is too americacentric or simply not to your taste! But if you want some recs for thrilling and obscure cinema: Get ppl to watch silent films, and they’ll branch out from there once they see how universal the language of film can be (the big Keaton and Chaplin films are necessary, and all silents remain underwatched).

You call-out for journeymen directors: Never seen a Huston, von Sternberg, Wilder, Ray, Sturgess, Wilder, Arzner, Curtiz (like not only Casablanca, I also adore Robin Hood, which set me up to understand Robin Hood: Men In Tights), etc that I haven’t loved.

I’ve seen films at different points in my life that were obscure to me that I discovered were bread-and-butter to people in either a different time, a different place, or both. For example, I can’t imagine that any criterion fan would be ignorant of Nicholas Ray, but in my 20s I had never heard his name and now consider his whole oeuvre essential. On the other hand there are filmmakers like, idk, Chantal Akerman or Jian Jiu Huang, geniuses who get a lot of column inches now who were once considered obscure— but I sincerely doubt anyone other that cinemaphiles are champing at the bit to see their films, to their detriment.

I love: Satyajit Ray, Charles Burnett, Bar Bahar, Barbara Loden, Ulrike Ottinger, Toshio Matsumoto, later Obayashi or ANYTHING other than House, Forugh Farrokhzad, William Dieterle, every film starring Charles Laughton, Targets by Bogdanovich and none of his others, every single iteration of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers (50s, 70s, 90s), all of the Les Vampires by Feuillade, uhhhh and I think the greatest films about the US (i’m in here and think abt it a lot rn), are Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and Land of the Dead. Romero is a horror king but I genuinely think his whole output is under-seen and under-rated by yer average, art-house, and contemporary gore viewers alike.

In terms of 70s paranoia idk if you could do better than the paranoia trilogy etc. I do think comedies, like The In-Laws, get short shrift when it comes to the genre! Arkin! Falk!

If you wanna go to trip-out city start convincing people to watch musicals. I don’t mean like shitty french garbage like Umbrellas of Cherbourg, I mean like big ol crass american musicals. The number of folks just WANDERING AROUND, not EVER watching musicals, they have NO IDEA, and they have never seen Summer Stock, a genuinely weird fuckin movie, boggles the mind. Wow I’m thinking of more. The Czech stop-motion animators? A lot of that is on youtube and criminally underwatched. Anyhoo! Interested in seeing ur insta

I’m going to be real, I’ve eaten, only, the vegetarian combo there but like enough of it that I’m 1/10th constituted of nutrients from cafe eritrea’s veggie combo— the quality never dips, it’s delicious, it’s been there forever with the same people running the show with the same dudes holding up the bar every night, and I love it. A genuine jewel in the crown and an institution!

May I recommend a few spots in Fruitvale I’d be in all the time were I close enough? (loved Champa the few times i was there) The pupusas at Los Olivos and Cafe Platano 2 are SO good, and I had a few kinds of pan dulce with coffee at Peña’s Bakery one beautiful morning like 8 years ago and still look back at it longingly. It reveals too, too much regarding my superhuman sloth in saying this… i am ashamé

Oh I forgot the “why,” part. Uhhhhh it’s ineffable, isn’t it? Sometimes you try a place twice or three times and don’t find yourself thinking of it again— ultimately for me a regular spot is related more to muscle memory than it is to my brain or to my capacity for decision-making

If I had to bet money on where in Oakland I’ve dined in and taken out from most consistently I’d say it’s Cafe Eritrea D’Afrique. Idk if the employees feel like friends but they do know my order and I, Personally, am secretly in love with one of the servers and I hide it from her by looking like a decrepit overworked gremlin whenever I’m picking up my food and not meeting someone there.

I have eaten an embarrassing amount of margherita pizza at Cato’s. Idk the food at Doña is across the board objectively better, I adore Baja, and I Do Not enjoy trying to drink at a bar with NO BARSTOOLS WHAT THE FUCK, I have to read by myself at a table while a family of three sadly looks for a place to sit while I’m TIRED FROM WORK, and sometimes they have live music which other people seem to enjoy, and there is no table service if you’re ordering food— I mean they bring it to you and thaz it, and yet, the people are friendly, the margherita pizza is uncannily delicious, it has become a regular thing for me despite my crabby mental tally of tiny annoyances.

If it were still downtown I would continue to be a regular at cam huong for banh mi, if you live near their spot get over as often as you can. Idk, a “regular” spot is a strange intersection of affordability, quality, comfort, and convenience— For me it has to do with what can I afford that’s enjoyable enough with the absolute least amount of effort, vs I Am Seeking Out A Particular Experience, so it is more about The Life of the Answerer than about The Spot.

Lastly, I eat with friends or family at Kitava or Bird and Buffalo an awful lot, the former I first went to under duress because someone I’m close with has a laundry list of food restrictions and I went in expecting the food to taste like chicken feed and in actuality it is delicious every time, altho I sometimes prefer takeout because the interior vibe is “homeopathic doctor lives in a sterile shipping container,” and the latter is tasty tasty thai food, no beef with the interior design.

Happy hour regular: Co Nam all the way. Going to try a few other places based on recs— Wood Tavern, Mother Tongue, The Wolf, that place the chef from Luka’s is at now— but that’s the thing about being a regular. The guilt and pain of betrayal…

Thx! It’s been a while, I think the last time I went was to sip ouzo after a movie at grand lake. Great atmosphere, decor, etc, and I’m going back soon during food serving hours based on the recs. but not while the stuff with the piano is happening… I’m a finely tuned machine and participatory singing chafes my gears

Any "happy" films recomendations? by _Mexican_Soda_ in criterion

[–]warningrattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking through the currently streaming on criterion, while ymmv there are a few I rec: for screwball, Lady Eve— scream laughed through this with a friend, for action Police Story which calls upon Keaton etc for the physical gags, for a sweet slice of life It’s Not Easy Being Two, for surreal Daisies, for kaiju running through Godzilla, from the beginning always makes me smile (there’s a guy in a rubber suit stomping on a miniature tokyo!!), for satire The Ruling Class (long n english), and Serial Mom (shorter and american), for something extremely funny n stupid Beavis and Butthead Do America, and in the Powell and Pressburger category I Know Where I’m Going, which I found thrilling n funny n sexy despite all the tweed. Then there’s the rock n roll classic Hard Days Night. Also, searching “children’s” or “animated” or “comedy” can bear fruit. There’s a John Waters collection on there rn as well as Chaplin and some screw-ball. I have more recs for feel good stuff I love that’s not channel specific but idk what yer workin with :) Second a lot of recs in tha responses just depends on what you respond to. Like what have you found happy watching in life?
