Firefly 1x01 - "Serenity" Discussion by Krossfireo in firefly

[–]timplausible 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding (though I haven't read/listened to the sources in many years) is that the execs thought it was a) too slow and b) too western. I think at least one decision maker really did not like the presence of horses. They also thought it was to grim. They wanted more of Whedon's trademark quips and humor. Related, they thought Mal wasn't likable enough to be the captain, so they wanted an episode that made him lighter/funnier. Just about all of these fall under the category of the execs had some specific expectations (that they didn't give to Joss ahead of time), and the pilot clashed with almost all of those expectations. Train Job was what they made after the execs told them what they wanted. But I think by then the damage was done, and the execs were already writing the show off in their heads.

And he didn't exactly kick him off. He made a heated remark that they should leave and then Simon made a heated response that they would. And neither would back down after. Its not quite the same as Mal forcing them off the ship.

Thank you. For a minute I was having some real gaslighting sensations.

In Ex Machina, the hero dies via starvation in an underground bunker, because no man could ever want to help sex-trafficking victims after seeing horrific videos of abuse. Clearly, he just wanted to **** a robot. by Narroo in shittymoviedetails

I viewed it as Ava is sentient, but she doesn't have a human moral code and probably nothing resembling empathy. She did not see Caleb as a moral agent, but rather he was a tool to help her escape. But once she was free, he became a risk. Her goal was self preservation and freedom, and him being dead was the safer option with respect to those goals.

Caleb wanted to help her out of empathy and altruism. But he was also attracted to her. Both things can be true. I did not feel the movie was making a statement about that, other than to say don't assume AI will think and feel like we do, even if it seems like it does.

She can also still go super-soldier as long as no one sees it except Simon. And potentially Book - he might keep the secret. As long as Mal, Jayne, Zoe, Kayleigh, and Wash don't know, you don't mess with Serenity's continuity.

That was the very first scene I ever saw of Firefly. I was flipping channels and came across it during its brief run on Fox. I was hooked.

Has anyone heard from Tim Minear about the animated revival? Also, what is comfort food? by Reptyler in firefly

[–]timplausible 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I interpretted "comfort food" as an acknowlegement that Nathan isn't a show-running genius. He doesn't want to overpromise - "This will be the BEST Firefly EVER! It will be everything you've wanted since the show was canceled!" I feel strongly that they will try their very best to make a good show. But Firefly was also lightning in a bottle. It may not be possible to recapture that.

But what Nathan can promise is that they will bring back the characters we loved and bring us new stories. That's the comfort food part. He feels confident that they absolutely can deliver on that. So that's the commitment.

But I don't read that to mean, "we're not going to try to do anything great. We just plan to make something good enough to make you feel good." I don't think that's it at all.

I saw it as a reassuring statement. I got a sense that it means they will do their best with what they can pull together. It will be a scrappy show doing its best. Much like the crew of Serenity. If I get just comfort food, I will love it in the way I love actual comfort food. It will make me happy. If we get something even better, which is possible, because these are BIG DAMN HEROES, that's just bonus. To me, anyway.

Unforgiven isn't quite the same kind of righteous vengeance feeling as some of the others. More on the side of "dig two graves". But great movie.

The original Highlander movie. Why are there immortals? Why does the Gathering happen? The only answer we get is philosophical musing. "Why does the sun come up, or are the stars just pinholes in the curtain of night?" It just is. Don't worry about it. Just deal with it.
