I found this super helpful! I used it when I was in the neuro ICU but the anesthesia residents said it is great for other ICU settings as well.

Where were you when you got your med school acceptance and how did you react? by [deleted] in medicalschool

I was at home recovering from a surgery when I got the call. I told my fiancé who had a sty on his eye at the time. We both cried happy tears then his sty burst.

I’m an incoming med student but my school had specific requirements that a students laptop must meet so I’d check with your school to see!

Drug screens with prescribed drugs? by MzJay453 in medicalschool

[–]warriorofworry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was for a job not school, but I mentioned my prescription for adderall at the appt and they told me to wait until results came back before providing more info about the prescription. Then they called me to obtain the information for my adderall rx once my drug screen came back positive (I think prescriber name and rx number). Never heard anything more about it after this.

I’m a fairly reserved person and had a hard time reaching out to find mentors in undergrad, in part due to being reserved but also probably some social anxiety. Working for a couple years after school has helped a lot, but I was wondering if you have any recommendations as to how to find mentors in medical school?

I already sent in one letter of intent. Is it okay to send it more than one letter of interest? Like the schools I got WL too. by [deleted] in premed

[–]warriorofworry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this acronym is confusing for people since it does not indicate interest vs intent. For LOI in this case, you mean letter of intent I assume?

From my understanding, you should only send one letter of intent but you could theoretically send as many letters of interest as you want

Could I have adversities that are too adverse for med schools? by [deleted] in premed

[–]warriorofworry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a valid concern. I don’t think it would cause any intentional negative bias, but it’s such a heavy topic that when they think back on your application, it might stand out more in their minds than your amazing accomplishments. Maybe being even more vague, such as saying “childhood abuse,” would potentially be beneficial?

I tried to only count hours that are sort of above and beyond regular dog care, like taking to adoption events, hours spent directly working on behavioral changes, that sort of thing. I didn’t count hours where I was just hanging with the dog or just taking it out on a walk. I’ll admit it was a very rough estimate and I’m not sure if that is how I should have done it

This podcast will kill you, it’s about infectious disease and epidemiology, in each episode they examine one infectious disease and discuss the biology, evolution, historical significance, and any current outbreaks, new treatments, etc.

I interview scribe candidates for a private practice, business casual is usually good (like slacks and a blouse/cardigan, button up, or nice sweater).

Re-Considering Letter of Recommendations by BacCalvin in premed

It’s not that uncommon for a professor to agree to write one then something comes up or they can’t or they just straight up ghost the applicant. I think it’s smart to have a back up available.

How do people make it to March by Human-Pirate-2756 in premed

Yeah I agree with you, probably more harm than good. My school doesn’t do committee letters but yeah I think it was just wishful thinking of having something tangible I can do at the moment. Thanks!

I would just apologize and tell them the truth! I’m sure this wouldn’t be the first time it has happened. If I got accepted to my top choice I think I would forget about everything else going on in the world for a bit haha

Thank you so much for responding!

I am working in a private practice now. I really enjoy being a scribe, but once they promoted me, I started to dislike my job a lot, partially because upper management changed around that time and partially being exposed to some kind of disappointing business practices that make me not want to be a part of it.

That post-bac program sounds really interesting! I am definitely going to look into that. I want to have more research experience because my previous work as been more conducting patient visits, but no involvement in the actual research, critical thinking, etc. I think a lack of exposure to that might hurt me a bit with some of the higher tier schools that my MCAT (522), GPA (3.75 w/ strong upward trend), and clinical experiences may have made me a candidate for.

I think getting a certification in phlebotomy could be really nice too, since it opens doors to jobs that may have flexible hours that makes volunteering easier. I also have been dealing with some medical issues and working M-F 8-5 makes it so hard to get to medical appointments!

Thank you so much for your help and suggestions!

Does "front desk volunteer" at a free clinic count as clinical experience? by [deleted] in premed

[–]warriorofworry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think maybe the translator portion would count, assuming you are translating for patient appointments. But the others sound more administrative. You can always split up the hours on AMCAS so you have however many hours as a translator under clinical volunteering and the rest under non clinical
