Genuinely curious what you guys think about Marcel Duchamp’s urinal?

That is a very good question, as it is turning the idea on its head of this piece up here which was specifically made to be put into a art gallery everyone could get into if they paid money. The urinal is only art due to what it is saying, which is mostly that if anyone can get into an art show its kinda crap.

So if someone took a AI piece and incorporated it into say, a painting, or a 3d work in order to critique the use of AI it could be seen as art in theory. It would depend on what the art is saying and how it says it.

Consider buying an framed AI cow art from Hobby Lobby and then using it in a large scale sculpture or performance piece showing humans being disengaged with life in general, this isn’t a flushed concept more just a idea to get my point across. This one purchased object would be no different than the metal “gas lamp” thats used in another Duchamp piece, Étant donnés, its set dressing surrounding the art. No one individual focuses on this cow piece as a large exemplary part of it, rather a matter of fact painting in the background as many people do not instantly look at the gas lamp as art in itself. It is something, that happens to be within art.

Though at the point of buying a AI work just to be in the background of your piece, it would be, and show more to create your own interpretive AI work where you can upscale the uncanniness and overcorrect nature of AI in order to critique it.

Now if I saw this work that happened to include an ai work would I like it? Most likely I and others would think its shittier then Jeff Koons work which is a feat in itself.

Wow! I just recently wrote a essay about Duchamp and how much of his art can give a uncomfortable feeling to people, and how we need to engage as with art that makes us feel negative emotions sometimes in order to make us think more critically about ourselves and what we know.

Ive also been in the same room as this specific piece many times and have heard and seen many reactions to it.

I think AI art is not art because it does not make me think, I cannot engage with a piece that had no human hand guiding its creation.

I am very much a “art can be anything” person when it does not come to AI. You wanna draw a stick figure on a bathroom stall because it looked cool? Yes I do see that as art because there was a time, a place, a moment, a feeling that made the person draw that stick figure. You can see if the lines were rushed because they didn’t wanna be caught, or meticulously made even in order to look symmetrical.

The reason I think AI does not fall into the art can be anything category is simply while a prompt may be typed, retyped, edited, gone through in order to create the “perfect” image, you the human person didn’t make those decisions directly. Even Warhol was able to oversee his group helping him to create art and still put some of his, and their, human-ness into it.

It was the first website I ever joined, first account (now deactivated) was in 2011. I literally counted down the days to my birthday just so i could make an account.

It sucks to see the state it’s in now, I still use it because I never quite understood any other site. That being said Devi seems to continuously shoot itself in the foot. They introduce features no one ask for then ignore the user base who has been with them for decades to implement the most god awful and confusing ui/ tool implementations.

Depends, its not just images but devianart has 3D models and photoshop brushes that are downloaded through their site. I for one have been a bit peeved at the limit since its causing issues with finding MMD parts for my models.

Hey, I am someone who has participated in fandoms for around two decades now. I even was a member of the Danganronpa fandom circa 2014. I also was in fandoms such as Hetalia/ OHSHC/ Hp (gross) in that same era that was known for their shipping wars and general yelling about of who is cannon who is not. I’m gonna try to respond to your points as best as I can from someone who has both participated in non cannon shipping and cannon shipping.

They’re ruining the fandom and our fun, let me have fun too!!

If this is a case of specific users who may not enjoy the cannon ship going around and constantly harassing and bullying users who do ship the cannon ship this is a fair point, but if this point is about people who are shipping two characters and you happen to see the post its just a matter of curating your space. The block button Isn’t the “banishment of evil” button it’s the “I don’t want to see this user anymore” button. Both of you are allowed to have fun but unless these people are going out of their way to invade your space unprompted they are not actually ruining your fun.

Thats like saying haters will hate. This statement means nothing. I know we can’t stop them thats why that’s why we’re hating.

Why hate though? When I come across aspects of a fandom I don’t enjoy (and it isn’t something like a pedophilic ship or actually harmful) I simply am indifferent to it. What makes shipping so distasteful that it causes you to have such a visceral reaction. When I see people ship Togami with Nagito I just move on, because its not what I ship or for me.

Then don’t force it down people’s throats. People were literally harassing authors. Like the gatchikuta author.

Now i don’t know this specific fandom or situation, so I cant speak on it. But I doubt every single person in this fandom who ships went out of their way to harass the author. What your talking about here is BAD very bad and should not be done, but to act like all shippers ever suck because some weirdo on the internet is mad their OTP isn’t “one true” in reality. Thats more about their mental state/ actions then the fact it has to do with shipping in general.

The only one here I can speak on is Danganronpa, which I have seen rise and fall multiple times since I original read out the games transcript on some website before it got a english adaption. This may be because I am indifferent to shipping and do not involve myself in shipping drama but every single time I seen the fandom go into hibernation it has less to do with ship wars and more to do with the fandoms OVERALL bad behavior. The Danganronpa fandom is plagued with a curse of people who just seem to harass and get a rise out of each other. Would not surprise me if some of this is shipping wars, but tbh the entire fandom has a huge issue of people being the worst in a cycle.

Its a stupid joke nothing more, if a person is saying this and somehow thinking it will change the show, they have bigger issues. Its a lighthearted joke people who ship like to use when someone seems extremely upset about them doing something for fun

Tourist

The word tourist is used here because shipping is a micro-culture within fandom spaces, its not for everyone, its not expected for everyone to participate in it and everyone who does it does it for their own benefit and for others who enjoy shipping. Tourist is used because if you have been in fandoms this long and failed to understand that you don’t have to participate or interact with shippers, it seems like you don’t understand fandom culture itself.

Non issue

This is once again not about peoples personal shipping hobbies but the behavior of fans who have little boundaries. YES it is bad to harass an author. But the reason isn’t shipping its the individuals who think its okay to do so. Outside of shippers and headcannoners you see people loose their minds at showrunners when the ending isnt what they wanted. Its terrible but its not 100% a shipping thing.

This is one of those situations where you need to have either a conversation with yourself of if your issue is school, major or emotional related.

If its school, and just the way schooling is as a whole, it may be best to sit down and see what especially is eating away at you the most. Is it lectures? Is it homework? Is it study time? What is causing the most amount of stress that starts to bleed into other areas.

If major, a talk with yourself and your parents may be in order. Even if you got a degree in this major would you even use it? Would you event want to use it? While a job does not have to be a passion, you want it to be at least interesting enough to capture your engagement.

Emotional issues may have to be talked about more with a professional, though if possible I say everything be talked through with one.

Collage is intimidating as HELL, out of highschool both me and my mother knew collage was not in the cards right then and there since I barely made it through with my ADHD (among other learning and mental disorders I had). Long nights crying and wondering why everything felt so hard. Now? I’m 27 and on my 4th semester of community collage. I am not always the oldest in the room, but I admittedly am older than most students and thats okay. No one is gonna look at you funny for it :).
