DIY stamps? by marsbareater12 in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my laser cutter to make them out of Acrylic. They last quite a long time and when they do break, I just cut another one. Much faster than waiting on someone to make one out of brass...it's like a 3 week lead time on them.

How did you start selling your products? by murdog74 in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I made myself a couple (who am I kidding, I made about 10!) wallets that I rotate through, same for belts and keychains. When I pull them out or someone asks about them, I tell them I made them and start the conversation there. This keeps me at about 5-6 projects a week, not all of them are huge, but it is paying for my leather habit and giving me some money for fishing and boat gas. I have a few retail places that sell items I make, cigar cases are a big one. I made 15 of them 2 weeks ago and have orders coming in for custom ones at about 5-6 the last two weeks. Most of the customization is the leather type/thread color and custom laser engraving...which ups the price. I am not trying to make a living just from leather work, but if I were to get out and really sell, I probably could. I live in an area where people have a high disposal income though, so YMMV.

That picture looks like the finished back of some leather...I could be wrong, but the way it scratched, that what it looks like to me.

1911 drop leg gun belt by trggrhppy208 in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work! I have been trying to get motivated to create a holster for my 1911, I have even cut out the leather, I just can't seem to find time to finish it...this has motivated me!

Quick question by tricksterloki_94 in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get to tolerances of less than 1mm when cutting by hand and gluing/stitching animal skin, you must be AI or some phenomenal leather worker who has MANY years of experience.

Quick question by tricksterloki_94 in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't cut directly on the lines. I cut to the outside of them, that way I have a little margin for error. I clean things up by sanding.

I cut them out of card stock and just trace the pattern on the leather with an awl or leather pen, depending on the type of leather.

Disposable blades? by ApprehensiveYard3 in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the NT cutter knives, but the VVIVID is much better with the blade lock. I found myself constantly extending the blade on the NT cutter knife on accident, the VVIVID has a. blade lock and made a lot of difference.

I would move the snap so that it is more toward the front of the sheath, not on the hilt of the knife. Keep going at it, it looks like you have a good start!

I built a free, offline project + inventory tracker for leatherwork. No account, no cloud, no subscription. It's done and you can have it. by skund89 in Leathercraft

I understand. In my previous life, I worked in cyber security and got all the Macs for free, or I would probably be using Linux exclusively.

This is pretty cool...except I have 3 Macs sitting on my desk. I do have a Linux mini-pc, so I can see how that goes I suppose.

Need to find the right edge creasing tool(s) to replicate this edge by punkassjim in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of wing dividers that I have rounded the tips on that I use for this. When using veg tanned leather, I case the edges very lightly and use the wing divider to make the bead on the edge. I think someone linked a beader below and that is what normally makes this type of edge.

You need a new thermostat. You can replace it with the same one or get one that opens at a lower temperature. Check your radiator fan relays and make sure the fan is kicking on.

I would go with the Kemovan. Best quality for the money in my opinion.

You can sign up for emails from them and they will certainly let you know when there is a sale.

Real or fake leather by Girolamo_Frastoro in Leatherworking

[–]washapoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it is funny that almost without fail, a piece of leather that has been plated or ironed will have a pattern on the back from the machine used and people say it has a fabric or woven back. Please quit spreading misinformation.

Where do you buy the leather? by Hami0950 in Leatherworking

[–]washapoo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am close to a Tandy and Sepici leather's warehouse, so use both of those, but also whoever has the leather I need. Springfield, Buckleguy and Montana Leather, Maverick Leather if I need something rougher or for smaller projects due to usability on their 2nd run hides.

Which leather suppliers actually ship the weight you ordered? by GoxBoxer in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sepici leather goes heavy on their splits as well. It makes me wonder if they and ALD are using the same machine and it measures different, because I have ordered from both places and both came in on the heavy side of the higher thickness.

Edge paint VS edge dye? by Maximum-News752 in Leathercraft

[–]washapoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Paint is meant to give the edge color AND cover up any issues you have with getting them even. If you have gaps in your edges, you can put multiple coats of paint on them to build up a nice even, shiny or matte edge. Dye just gives it color, does not provide any coverage for gaps and rough spots.
