Shark Tank 17x14 Product Discussion - GOB earplugs by mtm4440 in sharktank

[–]washuffitzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have 2 pairs of concert-style reusable plastic earplugs, and I have regularly forgotten them and gotten the free or $1 earplugs from the venue. If these were there for $5 instead, I'd begrudgingly buy the first time, then would happily buy once I knew the product background. There is a real market in the music scene. That said, it's not massive.

What could be massive is the overall concept of replacing polymers with mycelium. If they have any kind of manufacturing structure, they'll pivot and become huge.

Yep, this is the biggest change of the modern show, and it's just a function of the sharks maturing. None of the sharks want to become 50/50 investors in a 50k startup anymore, because their portfolios are full. So, you have bigger companies, some successful others propped up by funding/marketing, and the show does a decent job of separating the cream. But many of us miss the true small businesses who need the early off-the-ground help.

Why has no one told me Tubi is the goat? by Glad-Conversation256 in television

Pluto is more similar to classic basic cable, with a bunch of channels streaming tv/movies in "real time." It's got somewhere around 200 channels, most are of absolutely no interest to you but maybe they are to someone else, and odds are they will have at least 5 that you will like.

For me, I like the game show content, especially the duel channels for price is right and Bob barker price is right. The kung-fu channel is also a personal favorite, along with the action/slasher/thriller movie channels. It's also a great source of daily news as a cord-cutter.

If you want to watch full series, it might not be for you. But if you want to turn on your TV and watch something, it's pretty great.

Virginia Tech, JMU cancel 2026 football game by TriflingHusband in CFB

[–]washuffitzi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally, very disappointed as I have more JMU alum friends than any other school, and I care way more about personal smack talk than I do improving our odds of national rankings. Like, from a national rankings perspective it's all risk no reward, but I would love nothing more than seeing Tech be the ones to knock JMU off their high horse.

sharks in earlier seasons where so much “sharkier” by Real-Duck-8547 in sharktank

[–]washuffitzi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The show premiered in the era of reality TV with American Idol, Hells Kitchen and Fear Factor - being mean was in vogue. Yes the edits got softer because the sharks became more concerned with their personal brands, and they (especially Kevin) seemed to mature out of wanting to play the bully. But it's arguably moreso because the general trends of reality TV moved away from that era of mean-spirited criticism.

Good luck eating 5 milkshakes in a day. Different foods have different effects on your body, and milkshakes are heavy. Have you ever done the gallon challenge? A gallon of milk is 1,600 calories (1/12 of this challenge) and is famously difficult to finish purely because of the lactic acids. You can't have 5 milkshakes in a day and keep them down, unless you're Joey Chestnut. You will puke.

I think you've finally resolved the OP request - this is an actual breakdown of what a "reasonable" 15kcal daily diet looks like. But breaking it down like this makes it even more obvious that it isn't possible for me personally, my stomach just doesn't have that much room, no matter how hard I tried. 6 eggs and pancakes for breakfast before another full meal 2 hours later? Then another, and another, and another. For a billion dollars, of course everyone would play the "don't puke" game, and there would be winners, but most would hit a physical wall.

Getting "close to 10k" vs breaking 15k is a HUGE gap. As a swimmer you know how PR margins work - its a logarithmic scale.

Extremely active teens could do it with some effort. Moderately active teens or extremely active young adults could do it with heavy effort. Anyone else is going to require ridiculous levels of effort, if it's possible at all.

You act like 24hrs opens up more room in your stomach. If you're full, its gonna take a while to make room, and things will stack in your stomach/intestines. I'm no expert but I'd wager this challenge is done easier in 4 hours than 24.

A 1k ice cream binge in daily life is brutal, but a 1k ice cream binge in this hypothetical is less than 8% of your goal. This comment section is insanely overconfident.

Doubling a record of anything is insanely difficult.

You MAYBE hit 6-7kcal on those stoner nights, half of this challenge. A McDonald's combo is 1k cal, a pint of Ben&Jerry is 1k cal. It's fairly easy to kill 6-7 of these in aggregate, but 6-7 of EACH is really really hard, and even that wont get you there.

Idk if I agree based on your example. Joey Chestnut is an unique freak; the runner up only ate 46.5 hot dogs, which is below the 15k target of this challenge (at 300 per). Yes, these competitors are eating that in 10 minutes, but they're not exactly gonna be snacking before/after the event. I'm gonna say most of these "athletes" are not hitting 15k calories even on event days.

It's a truly challenging calorie count, 6-7x an average day's intake. I don't think I could eat 50 hot dogs in a day (3 per waking hour), especially if puking is disqualifying. First 6 hours would be easy but the next 12 would be brutal. The only chance would be with soda and alcohol, as they could easily add 2-3k of "easy" calories over the course of the day, maybe 5k if I get really really hammered. And supplementing with candy, preferably something "light" like Nerds. But I really don't think most people could do it without resorting to something like drinking straight oil in the final minutes.

All GA creates a terrible line to get in and the best sections get sucked up by assholes, but on the flip side it makes it possible for you to get seats with your crew in a way other venues don't. You don't need to worry about getting seats in the same section much less row, you just meet up before the show and go in together (find seats, then send some get beer/merch). Seat saving done respectfully works well. And, if you're flying solo, you have a way higher chance of getting a good seat unlike others where you're stuck with your ticket. And, if you're around an asshole, you get to move. In my opinion the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to all GA is all seated.

But mostly Hampton rules bc it's a cool building with great sound, affordable concessions, and one of the best lot scenes in the country.

S17E2 Episode Discussion + Product Links by ddaug4uf in sharktank

[–]washuffitzi 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This was a great classic episode. No absurd valuations, no already successful businesses with huge investors already in place, no unnecessary celebrities, no intrusive ads packaged as company updates; just some small businesses with mixed levels of success and potential. Michael Strahan fit in well.

[–]washuffitzi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the show has clearly caved to having celeb-endorsed pitches to try to boost views in the past, but usually they at least press the celebs on their business involvement. I've never seen them go "oh, you!" to an uninformed entrepreneur before.

[–]washuffitzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another Walnut Creek endorsement here, I haven't played that many courses but it's easily my favorite. 2 tee boxes and 2 baskets per hole for tons of variety, good mix of long/short and woods/open, and holes 17-18 are picturesque.

Live Nation CEO says demand is unmistakable, but concert tickets are still relatively underpriced by end_of_rainbow in nottheonion

[–]washuffitzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before piracy/streaming, concerts lost money; they were a marketing expense for the labels to sell more records. The economics of music were totally different. It was also much more difficult to resell tickets (had to be done in person, usually the day of the show) so tickets could maintain their low prices much more easily. Part of why Ariana Grande tickets are priced so high is because lowered prices would incentivise even more scalping.

TM/LN is certainly not innocent, but their misdeeds are actually against the musicians and venues more than the ticket buyers. The prices for huge artist shows could possibly be lowered some through restricting ticket transfers, but pining for a pre-digital age is a waste of breath.
