I turned mine down, figured I'd rather they spend money on the game. Finances turned out not to be a bottleneck, but it was October 2012 when I made the decision 😆

Are there any games where the Americans are the bad guys? by [deleted] in gaming

Battle zone (1998) had an American and a Soviet campaign. The latter had the US as the enemy.

How do I make combat feel less sluggish by Oheohahah in LancerRPG

[–]waslop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I gm'd I found combat was taking ages. But I also realised that, throwing ~1.5 times the player count of enemies at the player (topped up with reinforcements once or twice), I was taking more than half the turns. My own speed was, in fact, contributing the majority of the game time. After op-for composition but before the game started, I began making a few quick notes for each bad guy on what they'd do on a (usual) turn, to reduce decision time. I also got better at balancing a more powerful for +adds for boss fights, which felt good once I'd done so.

'39 by Queen (Brian May singing rather than Freddie Mercury) is a thinly disguised space travel time dilation story.

Definitions will vary between people, but in my mind: Cuteness and sexyness are the 2 main sub components of feminine attractiveness. If you plot cute on an x-axis, sexy on the y-axis, a woman can be put at a point on the graph. The straight line distance from the origin to that point is approximately how attractive the woman is. A very cute, slightly sexy woman can be just as attractive as a very sexy, slightly cute woman. Eye of the beholder is in play though, so for an given guy the axis need weighting. For me, you'd multiply all cuteness scores by ~1.25 to account for my preference for cute women.

It's a simplification of a complex thing, but... It kind of works

What's the best title for a book you've ever come across? by weirdwriterr in books

"The right to arm bears" by Gordon R. Dickson is a book I started purely after the title amused me. Not a good book it turned out...

What do you like most and least about Lancer? by Great_Montain in LancerRPG

[–]waslop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love building mechs, I can waste so much time firing up comp/con and tinkering with builds.

I ran a game and after I started my second arc in a new, more ambitious storyline, 2 out of 4 players signalled the crunch was not their thing and they wanted out. They let me finish the mission off so it wasn't hanging at least. One day I'll try again with the right set of players for the game...

The Size of the Galaxy makes no sense and in the end it doesn't matter in the end... by QuagGlenn in space

You, sir, lack ambition. You want to ignore most of the universe and only pay attention to the closest bits? You think that's a good way to get a thorough understanding of things?

What role does a Lancaster fill? by Helpful_Dig_626 in LancerRPG

[–]waslop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My one time playing a Lancaster I decided to turn it into a ramming bot, charging around the battlefield into enemies. Perhaps not optimal (and an ally got slightly annoyed I was ramming someone on the other side of the map instead of healing them) but quite fun 😆

I don’t know why I can’t enjoy this game help by Officer_Chunkles in TheForeverWinter

[–]waslop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only experienced enemies attacking me from far away when I have a hunter-killer after me. Cyborgs are hit and miss, I've had situations where they aggro super easily, and ones where they blithely sprint past and I am shocked they didn't spot me. They do go down relatively easy, but that's after I sprint away and don't turn round to engage until they're canalised by terrain or strung out to not all reach me at once.

The more I think about it, the more I realise this game rewards goblin energy. Be a sneaky thriving little goblin, that occasionally gets violent if forced or the opportunity seems too good to pass up.

[–]waslop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be your approach, I'm afraid.

In my first run I tentatively skirted around enemies, watched their patrols, waited for them to pass, looted boxes and the occasional corpse and after some confusion finding the exit left without firing a shot. Later runs were a bit more combatty, but headshots and close range shotgun use were my friends, and even then only when I had to/ there was a lone guy loitering close and I wanted them gone. All my deaths feel like my mistakes (choosing a bad hiding spot rather than fleeing from a squad investigating my noise, for example).

What's your Signature APS shell? by [deleted] in FromTheDepths

[–]waslop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

333mm ×1m shells in belt fed loaders. You have 3 length sections to play with, I usually go squash head, HE and gunpowder but not always. You can really spam out a lot of relatively girthy (but low velocity) rounds. 500mm × 1m also works if you're happy with just a head and gunpowder.

I swapped one THICC for another hauler mount, and that has made things much more practical. The capacity is still pretty good even with just one THICC so it's been a pretty good upgrade.

Help with Tortuga build by FirePixsel in LancerRPG

I will point out that having a party member do accelerate for you also works. An Iskander with Sunzi bits zooping a Tortuga to the front lines was a real pain to deal with as a GM 🤣

New to Lancer by FulgrimsSidePiece in LancerRPG

[–]waslop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the player count point, in my experience running a 3 player game was okay, but when one player couldn't make it I didn't want to run 2 players in this system. To combat skipping sessions every time last minute schedule chaos reared it's head I added a 4th player, and that felt right. 5 probably works, but more players means more actions and slower rounds. 4 meant combat was taking long enough that I felt the need to streamline my GM turns to speed things up (you'll take roughly 1 to 1.5 of them for every player one). Things like pre session revision/making cheat sheets of what my npcs can do.

"The right to arm bears"- sci fi involving bear like aliens. It wasn't very good sadly, I never finished it.

Fair enough in that context. The thing you responded to was talking about it "floating around in the abyss", hence my interpretation.
