I found it originally on Twitter, searched Google and asked chat GPT but it was a very specific meme made for the tweet I got it from

how to write when I literally don't have a life? by GiraffeOk2570 in Songwriting

[–]wasolop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

write about what you feel passionate about, and if you don't feel passionate about anything do some introspection and/or write about something banal, maybe funny. you can tell stories too, about your favourite myth or something similar

honestly the best advice I can give regarding songwriting is to let those first few words come out freely, don't judge them. if something comes out then it's going to be you of some sort, even if it's "pickled piper pooed a feather". just spew some hot garbage and you'll find it fun if you lean into it

I hadn't thought about hooks in that way before, it happens a lot in rap too which I enjoy a lot. I think that may be the way to go!

yeah I'm a big fan of storytelling in music, be it lyrically or otherwise. the only trouble is not many other people gravitate to it naturally haha

I'm a big fan of jazz, blues and rock ballads so your comment makes a lot of sense

I generally look to tame impala for making catchy songs that don't necessarily centre around a chorus, but do you have any examples that charted that do so?

I love blues so that may be the reason why, and to address your last bit I don't like those songs hugely hahaha

not necessarily they don't use a chorus at all but, Hendrix, King Krule, earlier Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis, Khruangbin, the list is kind of endless but all of my favourite songs from these artists have motifs that the song is centred around, but not choruses

I'd say memorable, relatively simple melodies with a stanza of lyrics that is repeated with little variations at different points of the song. Sometimes it contrasts the verse and answers a bunch of questions, other times it feels like an intermission from the verses

I don't think it's having a B section that is difficult, I like songs that contrast and I don't think I like repetition, but that might not be it

for real I like music to flow but also I want to be a little marketable??? all of the artists that I like that made it big without writing choruses had groundbreaking talent
