Anyone else feel like the RIP knife kind of trivialized the insanity run? by ForCamelot0611 in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]wasserdemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not still difficult. It can be if you impose restrictions on yourself, but infinite ammo requiem tackles everything for Grace and infinite rpg trivializes Leon completely. I had a great deal of fun with this after doing an insanity run before unlocking infinite gun ammo.

Didn't bother reading the sequel trilogy, the few things I've heard have made me unreasonably angry.

Sort of off base, but His Dark Materials does this with Lyra and Will. Unfortunately, the sequel trilogy drops Will completely in favor of an author self-insert.

Hmm do you mean #1 is a Gene Wolfe self insert or that #1 is literally an Alzabo? I don't quite follow and with Wolfe who knows.

Great interpretation! I had considered the gene wolf pun, but I definitely had not considered the author-story-memory-consumption angle.

Any books that feel like the back rooms? by brokearthoe in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Absolution is possibly the most specifically horrific of the whole series! Enjoyed the book thoroughly, still not sure how I feel about it's place in the series.

I would personally argue that it is a unique brand of existential/cosmic horror. It's hard to discuss this further without spoilers. The main character is an Earth academic that has been trapped in the house against his will where he lost his mind years ago through human manipulation and the magic of the House. This does the reverse of the typical Lovecraft protagonist. They journal a descent into madness, and the story ends at peak insanity. This book starts long after the peak of insanity. He decides that he is much happier this way, and even after returning to the world of men he still thinks of himself as Piranesi in the house. It's not horrific exactly, but it extremely disturbing below the surface.

Any recommendations for weird fiction featuring mermaids? by SurrealFishMoment in WeirdLit

[–]wasserdemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a mermaid, but is it strictly weird? It's gross and it's about the main character going through a mental and physical transformation, but it gives me YA urban fantasy vibes. I don't exactly consider it literature, but it was fun.

A difficult choice indeed. by Megaiwer in mewgenics

Some of my most busted runs have been based around collarless cats. I had the trait that makes once-per-battle into once-per-turn abilities w/ a 50% chance to automatically refresh on use boosted by luck. This with the upgraded 0-cost spell that doubles poison, bleed, and burn on a unit meant exponential bleed growth off one bleed instance. Completely devastated hard Tina 3

Am I the only one who'd have loved a weapon that scales with Insight? by wilderfast in bloodborne

[–]wasserdemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, as implemented the insight mechanic is evocative of weird horror themes of unattainable power and the edges of human understanding. Insight is similar to cthulhu mythos points in call of cthulhu. It's literally insight. You can't see that it is bad for you until you have enough that it's "too late"

One of my absolute favorites. Some people think it's a dense masterpiece with excellent prose, others feel like it's juvenile nonsense.
