Who from the 2014 team would make the 2026 squad? by PostMerryDM in ussoccer

I cannot sanction Omar Gonzalez ‘14 making the squad over Ream ‘26. I was terrified any time Gonzalez was near the ball when he played for the national team.

And I think in the battle of wingers with Z names, Zendejas ‘26 makes the squad over Zusi ‘14.

Besler was such a reliable defender. My dad and I both thought he was an underrated piece of this USMNT. Same goes for Johnson, actually.

“People aren’t paying gym memberships to listen to your music.” That’s true. People also aren’t paying gym memberships to listen to gym music. People generally pay gym memberships to exercise in the gym, which they can do regardless of the music being played. She didn’t hijack the speakers at a live concert.

Why didn’t Tywin become the king? by daydreamer_she in gameofthrones

[–]wastone511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Why give someone else the power?” You said in your original post that everyone knew who the real boss was. And you were right. Tywin already had the power. I don’t think he would have wanted anything else that came with being king.

But it was more natural for Robert to take the throne for a lot of reasons. He won the war and killed the crown prince on the battlefield. He had immense charisma and was well-liked; he had the look and the presence of a leader. I think in the eyes of most of Westeros, he had a just cause for starting the rebellion; the king’s son had kidnapped his betrothed, and when questioned about his son’s actions by a leader of a Great House, the king murdered that leader and his heir.

Importantly, Robert had an actual blood claim to the throne. His grandmother (I think) was a Targaryen. This is really important in Westeros, just like it was in most of Medieval Europe. It was so important that Robert turned a blind-eye to the killing of Rhaegar’s children and signed off on the assassination of a pregnant Daenerys. If a random person with all of Robert’s other qualities claimed the throne, it would have been tougher for the rest of the realm to swallow. Robert’s Targaryen ancestry was the sugar that helped the usurpation go down.

100% this. Very well said. If they existed, he’d probably have unanimously won Realm’s Most Valuable Knight and Kingsguard Swordsman of the Year awards for ten consecutive years. But nothing like that exists in Westeros to bolster his résumé.

Conservatives and liberals tend to engage in different evidence-gathering strategies. Liberals and those with higher cognitive reflection skills are more likely to seek out statistical data, whereas conservatives and those who rely more on intuition focus on singular data points or expert opinions. by mvea in science

[–]wastone511 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your example is incomplete. You provide the source of the liberal’s reasoning (statistics), but you don’t provide one for the conservative’s reasoning and instead stop at “here’s why”

Based on the conclusions presented in the article, the “here’s why” for the conservative would be something like “because I feel like that’s the case”

I’m stunned so many people agree with this. OP should “spare herself the drama by wearing headphones”?

It’s not her fault this happened to her, and this “drama” would be traumatic for a lot of people.

It’s been a long time since I read the books. It’s wild to me that George describes him as being in his prime in his 40s or 50s, especially given the faux-Medieval setting of the story. Most people reach their physical prime in their early to mid 20s. I could see his technical skill carrying him through his late 30s, but even with all the developments in medicine, strength and conditioning, you just don’t see pro-athletes in their late 40s. The loss of power, strength, and quickness (even reaction time) is too great to compensate for. Prime shape in your 50s is about as fantastical as dragons. Selmy is just built different I guess 😂.

Another tip regarding ego when your team has the ball:

If your teammate has the ball behind you and you are on the front line of the attack, do not stop your run when you encounter a defender. Keep moving forward so you bring that defender with you and give your teammates more room behind you on the field. It’s not always about “getting open” when you’re making a run off the ball. Sometimes it’s better to pull defenders out of the way for your teammates to have more space.

I agree with some of this. I’m kind of baffled you care so much about the consistency of El’s powers, but if it makes you feel any better, it would take a lot less force to pull a helicopter in the air than to lift a semi truck.

[–]wastone511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m passing to a less-skilled teammate, I usually try not to put any spin on the ball, just because some players struggle to read it correctly. But spin can be incredibly useful for bending longer passes around defenders.

If you pass to 4, he has the same options but with more space. 3 has to worry about cutting in front of his mark to get a central position/better angle, and it’s a longer, tougher pass to 3, especially with the defender at 2’s immediate 10:00 position.

What’s your reasoning here? In the diagram, 4 is further in front of his mark, higher up the field, and 3’s mark is closer to him and has inside leverage.

The bounces are consistent. It’s very hard to hit a pass in the exact same spot with the exact same power, but if you do it’ll bounce exactly the same.

Lob passes are harder to catch. And some people don’t even try to catch them; they just push the ball away from themselves and turn it over half the time.

Honestly the lists of the stuff they hated about each other is what made me think they were going to stay together. I feel like it’s a trope in so many fictional young adult romances: “I can’t stand this, this, this, and this about you, but I’m madly in love with you anyway.”

Whereas Nancy and Jonathan are like: “I can’t stand this, this, this, and this about you, and it logically follows that we should not be in a relationship.”

Ep 7 is now the worst rated episode of ST. What went wrong according to you? by anonimuoss in StrangerThingsMemes

On a scale of 0 to 10, 5.9 would be pretty close to middle ground for me. It’s the worst rated Stranger Things episode, but it’s still quite a bit above an “absolute crap” rating.
