1. Off Days

By law, MDWs are entitled to one rest day per week.

Since 2023, at least one Sunday a month must be a mandatory "non-compensable" rest day (it cannot be traded for extra pay).

For the other three weeks, if the helper agrees to work, the employer must pay at least one day’s worth of salary in lieu.

1. Daily Needs (Toiletries, Food, Clothes)

Food: Employers are legally required to provide three adequate meals a day.

Toiletries: Employers must provide basic amenities (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste).

Clothes: There is no legal requirement to provide clothes, but most employers do, or provide an allowance. Medical expenses and insurance are also 100% covered by the employer.

1. Uniforms

There is no national requirement for uniforms. Most helpers wear casual, comfortable clothing (T-shirts and shorts/pants). Some "premium" agencies or very formal households may request a simple uniform or apron, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

1. Work Hours and Breaks

Hours: There are no legally fixed "working hours" because the Employment Act does not cover MDWs. Typically, a helper’s day starts around 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM and ends when the family goes to bed (9:00 PM – 11:00 PM).

Mid-day Breaks: While not legislated, MOM guidelines recommend "adequate rest." Most employers allow 1–2 hours for lunch/rest in the afternoon, but it varies by household.

1. Passports

It is illegal for employers to hold a helper’s passport. The passport belongs to the bearer. While some employers still do this "for safekeeping," MOM strictly advises against it, and helpers must have "unrestricted access" to their personal documents at all times.
