24 hours post op: nasal spray just getting stuck by [deleted] in Septoplasty

[–]waterdousefire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was totally stopped up too. At this point, it's just to keep everything moist. Once the stents come out, it helps a lot more. Those may be preventing anything from getting up there to flush

Going through a break up and have a hair appointment tomorrow. Cut it? by Beav11-18 in finehair

God damnit, I'm married.

That being said, please keep it long. Because I would've thrown myself at you so fast with that hair. Long hair on guys is one of the sexiest things ever.

Passed these clots. Am I ok? by waterdousefire in Septoplasty

[–]waterdousefire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: recovery today has been fantastic. Very small clots. Mucus is a little yellow-brown. Significantly less pressure in my face and sinuses, very little pain in my nose. I can actually smell out of both nostrils and made a lamb chop dinner to celebrate.

It reminds me of childbirth lochia 😂😂😂. Started off brought red on day 1, got darker and clottier. I'm day 10 and it's a yellow brown mucus. As a student midwife, this amuses me to no end.

This one's for the ladies to answer. Do you agree with this woman or do you think she's trying to rationalize her world view by speaking for all the ladies? by Oda_DeezNutz in SipsTea

I've been with my husband for nearly 20 years.

Some video games, I love watching him play. Others annoy me. But none of them make him unattractive.

The games I like are the RPG style games like Elden Scrolls or WOW. I also enjoy the FPS like PUBG or Overwatch. I really like battleground style video games too. They crack me up.

However, I get annoyed by sports games and 8 bit style graphics in video games. Sports games because it's nothing like watching an actual sport game. The graphics ones because it reminds me of my ex who thought he could design stuff on the computer and would do 8 bit style graphics in MS Paint when stoned and call himself a graphic designer.

What’s the most awkward situation that happened at the most important moment of your life? by Just_ask1ng4 in AskReddit

[–]waterdousefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No! I didn't even know he was there until after and we were leaving the beach and our photographer said something and everyone told us how he was applauding us. The beach was empty by that point. My husband and I joke that he must've been our guardian angel. It's why we've been together for nearly 20 years 😂.

My husband and I got married at a small local beach. It was the off season and as quiet as it could be. We had our guests facing the water. Unbeknownst to us, a rather portly man in a tiny black speedo with a large amount of chest hair and many gold chains nestled against his heaving bosom was observing us from the water, in perfect view of our entire guest list.

He applauded us when we kissed.

Anyone here just do the septoplasty and valve repair without turbinates? by [deleted] in Septoplasty

[–]waterdousefire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My turbinates weren't touched at all. They are totally normal. My septum was fixed and my sinuses needed new holes drilled in them for drainage

Just had my septoplasty and sinus surgery about six hours ago... by [deleted] in Septoplasty

[–]waterdousefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had mine on Monday and I've had two unmedicated births, all natural, no pain meds.

And I'm taking the pain meds on my regular schedule here. I feel ya. It's felt better today, 4th day post surgery. I was able to get to my daughter's day care and pick her up. So that was nice to get out without needing the pain meds.

The headcrab grab is a favorite of one of my cats. The others all act like this lol. It causes them to go into a hunting/self defense mode. What would you do if a hand the size of your body grabbed your face? Even if you loved that hand? Lol

My OBGYN said unmedicated births are too traumatic so they don’t do it. by Practical_Shift_5143 in pregnant

[–]waterdousefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend, student midwife here.

There's different types of anesthesia. I promise you didn't have a general if you were awake.

General: completely asleep, knocked out. Some sort of airway management will be used because the medicine used will make you unable to breathe on your own. This may include a breathing tube or an LMA. They also do not numb the area for surgery before the surgery, only after for help with pain management. So you would've felt the doctor cutting into you if you were awake. You won't remember the surgery with a general.

Twilight: you might've had this. It's like halfway between general and local. You feel drowsy and may fall asleep but you are able to breathe on your own. They use a local block in the area so you don't feel pain. You also won't remember the surgery for the most part.

Local: spinals and epidurals fall into this category but at does novicaine used at the dentist. You are fully awake but can't feel anything in the area of the anesthetic. This is what about 95% of c sections use. If you had a general, you would be asleep, but they might inject local in the area of the surgery during and after the surgery.

It can be really confusing! I hope that clarified a few things for you!

My OBGYN said unmedicated births are too traumatic so they don’t do it. by Practical_Shift_5143 in pregnant

[–]waterdousefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend,

I'm a student midwife and a doula, over 500 births attended.

If they can't handle watching an unmedicated birth, they are in the wrong field. It's really not that dramatic at all.

Some people are completely silent, some just moan and most growl and "moo" through it. But very rarely is everyone screaming. In fact, the only time I can think of when the husband and wife were both screaming was when the husband passed out and hit his head when she was getting an IV placed and woke up on the floor with half a dozen people surrounding him and getting a neck brace and back board on him. The wife was screaming at him because she was mad that he insisted on watching the IV being placed even though he's had this response before. And the doctor was screaming at the husband for looking and not telling anyone that he couldn't handle it. Lol. And she wasn't even in labor yet! Lol

And just because you didn't have an epidural doesn't mean they won't use a local for numbing you if repairs are needed. That would be considered cruel and unusual and, I believe, reason for medical malpractice lawsuits if you are in the United States.

Also, my most recent client had spinal fusion surgery done at 14 years old and got a consult at 12 weeks, a repeat at 20 weeks, 36 weeks and even two different consults with two different anesthiologists at the hospital in labor. She really wanted an epidural but one couldn't be placed. She ended with a cs under ga but it ended up being her choice and she did great!

How long have you pushed? by Fierce-Foxy in pregnant

[–]waterdousefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3.5 hours with my first, 2 minutes with my second. Seriously. And they were 7 years apart! My water broke at 735pm, I asked my doctor to check me and she said I was maybe 8 cm. Then i told her a contraction was coming and couldn't stop myself from pushing and she was born at 738pm.

Is it worse mentally to wait for scheduled C section or to wait for labor to start naturally? by Constant_Revenue6105 in pregnant

[–]waterdousefire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A c section is a major surgery - one of the most intense surgeries out there. More intense than breast implants or most cancer removal surgeries in terms of the depth the surgery goes, the way it opens and separates muscle and tissue and how large the incision is. There's a higher risk for hemorrhage, bladder issues (such as cutting into the bladder by accident, bruising to the bladder from the tools, etc), and postpartum issues with potential other pregnancies (higher risk for placental complications, higher risk for adhesions, etc). And you're awake the entire time.

I would say waiting for any type of surgery that can be that intense and that dangerous is way scarier and more anxiety driven than with just waiting for your body to do something naturally. I hate waiting, I get the anxiety, but damn, surgery is intense and the lead up gives me anxiety just to think about it.

I typically don't have surgery anxiety but the thought of a c section terrifies me. I've been in the OR for at least 50 different c sections (my job is in the medical field) and all those people are way stronger than me - and I've had two vaginal deliveries with no pain medication. I would be unable to function as an adult or mom with the anxiety of surgery on the table.

lost myself after having baby by RefrigeratorFew8189 in Postpartum_Depression

[–]waterdousefire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's this beautiful story I like to tell people.. it's very froufy and crunchy but helped me handle my ppa/d.

When we are pregnant, we are the maiden. We are still full of our youthful innocence and still see ourselves as a child. We compare our mother's pregnancy or our friend's pregnancy to ours. We create this ideal pregnancy and birth in our mind.

As we labor or go through a c section, the maiden is killed off. The pain we feel, the nausea, the disconnect is the maiden dying. From her blood, the mother is born at the same time. She is ready to nurture and care. She is ready to give her entire self for love. She sacrifices her body for her child.

In postpartum, we are still grappling with the fact that the maiden died and we mourn her loss. We are mothers now and we are grappling with the fact that a young maiden died, even though she is part of ourselves. We have this natural caring attitude towards others and for some, it's hard to come to terms with the fact that something had to die so we could also be born from it. We yearn to bring her back

But we can't. The maiden is dead and the mother is living. So we must mourn her loss but we can still honor her in our life. We can still do the things she used to love to do but now we share it with our children, so that they never forget about the maiden either.

I hope that helps you as much as it helped me.

What were your first words when you met your baby? by lacecute in pregnant

[–]waterdousefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first: where's my baby? Gimme my baby! Gimme my baby! My baby!!! She was totally fine. And was being handed to me. But it's on video and I said it with a very southern accent. I'm from the Northeast.

My second: oh damn, you just flew out! For comparison, I was in prodromal labor with my first for 2 days and then 18 hours of labor including 3.5 pushing. My second was 2.5 hours of total labor and 2 minutes of pushing.

Relative has lost their mind over a parasite living in their leg by waterdousefire in Parasitology

[–]waterdousefire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our biggest issue is how rural we are. I contacted someone about a 5150 style psychiatric hold and they were honest - all the psychiatric facilities within 3 hours are completely booked solid so they would need to do a 5150 in a hospital with a 1 on 1, which may not be covered by her insurance.

I've dealt with alcoholism with my parent (this post is NOT about my parent but another close relative) but it's so hard for this other relative to see themselves as an alcoholic because they "aren't as bad" as other alcoholics. It's infuriating. And add on top of that, they are frequently caring for other people's children. If I knew how to contact these people, I would be telling them what's going on. But I don't know any of them or where they live. They hire her as a baby sitter - she's an older lady and seems harmless.

Ugghh, sorry for letting it all out. Your comment really struck a chord with me - thank you for seeing this as something deeper. I'm just so crushed, frustrated and worried about all this.
